Mickey told the OWH that he has NOT had an interview for the head coach but that he'd love to stay on at Nebraska as an assistant IF the job was right. Not a surprise but I think that likely means he's out of the running but may well continue at Nebraska depending on who the new head coach is. Not earth shattering news but something straight from Mickey.

Interesting. I would imagine the job would have to be something like Assistant Head Coach or something like that with a big salary. Can't see him just going back to being a receivers coach.

From his presser today he knows he’s not getting the job now. IF he had got us to 7 wins I think there was a chance he would have gotten the job.

He's towards the end of his interview right now. Probably already over.

He already was assistant head and WR coach. I doubt he would have a problem resuming that job. He would be a great bridge of acceptance by the players for a new head coach. How can anyone not love Mickey.

Likely the same job as before the firing of Frost would be my guess AND of course compatibility with the new head coaches offense.

You'd likely have 3 highly paid, titled assistants under the new coach (as was the case before): Assistant Head Coach (Mickey's previous job), OC and DC. And of course recruiting coordinator title as well which I think also belonged to Mickey.

Especially after kick'n Frost and Chins out the door. Those guys pulled the winning lottery ticket.

If it's Rhule (or other), this would be a great move to unite fans and win them to his side while we go through a bumpy rebuild.

I think whether Mickey stays or goes depends on who the next coach is and what it is that coach wants for a staff. I highly doubt Trev would demand of the next coach that he must retain Mickey. However, he could lay out the case for keeping Mickey to the next coach and diplomatically request that at the very least he give Mickey a solid look over. We have a few recruits, one big time, who the next coach may not want to alienate by firing Mickey and that might be reason enough.

I think the probability is high that Mickey stays on in the same capacity before the Frost firing. BUT it's hard to predict with certainty right now given the uncertainty of who the new head coach will be.

We shouldn’t forget about the Arizona State head job that he was reportedly being considered for as well as the other P5/G5 head jobs that some felt were going to materialize if NU didn’t act quickly and name him head coach a couple of weeks ago

I predict Mickey stays on. Rhule as HC with Mickey an AHC and WR coach would pull big time players

Fun fact, the guy who Rhule hired to coach WRs at Carolina this year is....Joe Dailey, the former Nebraska QB (who later transferred to UNC).

The question is, will Dailey get retained by the next Carolina coach? Does Rhule want to bring him here? Does Dailey want to stay in the NFL? He was WR Coach at Boston College before this season. Rhule and Dailey only worked together for a few games, so it's not like they have a long relationship with each other.

Rhule's former longtime WR coach at Carolina, Baylor, and Temple, is now coaching WRs with the Steelers. But if Tomlin gets fired, he might be looking for a job too.

Will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Every Saturday MJ trots out on the field as the IHC, he's having an interview. He HAD the inside track. He ain't head coach material.
You know I actually think he is but IMO NU can’t afford to gamble with this hire. He probably needs to prove it on a smaller stage but he definitely says all the right things. We could do worse than Mickey

Tomlin isn’t getting fired and Joe Dailey better not come back to NU. He would be a huge step backward fromMickey as a WR coach

I saw that yesterday too! It's strange how whenever you look at a coaching staff you almost always see a guy you recognize from the past.

If he's not HC, I would love to see MJ stay on staff. I just hope Alberts doesn't try to saddle a new coach with requiring he keep so & so. It's important the new HC chooses his own staff.

I think Mickey has the PR part of being a Head Coach down pat and he's obviously a good recruiter. Where I haven't seen head coaching skills is in play calling or in second half game adjustments.

The one thing I question is how he deferred to Whip in that Minnesota game. That said Smothers didn’t exactly light the world on fire Saturday. Without CT we’re screwed.

It’s tough to make adjustments on offense when your QB struggles

Joseph was dealt a losing hand that got even worse with injuries.

Really appreciate Mickey’s effort. He was put in a terrible situation and has done the best he could do. I was pulling for him and who knows, he might be a fantastic head coach, but we can’t take the risk.

I bet Ruhle would bring Phil Snow with him as DC. He's old, but he's Ruhle's guy and has fielded some VERY good defenses.

what ever he wants to do as long as the dc is good recruiting and coaching. them 2 are important.
you have to get the horses and having them headed together in the right direction

pretty good wr coach and recruiter. so who knows what the next head will think of him.
the next head must be evaluated by the entire staff that comes with him. top ol and dl recruiters/coaches/developers as important as new hc right now.

Matt Rhule hired Joey McGuire, a very popular and successful Texas high school coach, as his tight end coach. McGuire is now the head coach at Texas Tech.
