For those in the know, what’s his upside to Heck? (No, I am honestly not trying to mimic Brian Ferentz, it’s just too early for me to think of another word right now.)

Also, whom do we believe was more on board with this decision, Kirk or Lester? Or do we believe it was mutual? (Or, are the fans who believe Kirk enjoys trolling message board geniuses/committed to starting the “wrong” quarterback, correct?)

Disclaimer: I am not stating agreement or disagreement with the decision to start Brown. I am just interested in other opinions. Thanks.

Nobody on here knows, so I guess we're going to find out these answers that you seek over the next few weeks.

Oh, c’mon now, Jonesy. There’s always at least someone on here who has a third cousin who knows this guy who knows this kid who knows this girl who dates the second cousin of a student manager who overheard Tim Lester’s niece’s boyfriend’s cousin five times removed talk about the quarterback evaluation process this week while passing out from eating too much peanut butter brittle at 31 Flavors.

If not, I know for sure several on here have multiple years of coaching experience in Pop Warner, or threw for 20 touchdowns in JV football as a true freshman who could provide a fountain of knowledge on this topic.

Anyway, whatta ya think? For fun.

I'll be that guy- The coaches are the ones who had all winter, spring, and now summer to evaluate both (or all) QB's and came to the conclusion that both(?) will play. That's the upside.

Trust the process. That's football.

Well, I guess we'll get to find out if Hawk fans in Kinnick will actually boo our starting QB.......

The idea this is an exhibition game and will serve as a QB audition…it’s absurd to be in this position. But it is what it is. I suppose there’s no other alternative. Just gotta ride with it.

But NIU has to come in with some confidence. If Iowas defense and ST don’t impose their will, things could get interesting in Kinnick this afternoon.

Heck looked better at kids day after Hank got the first snaps. Maybe Heck one of those guys who needs that push to perform at his best — like a race horse who does better coming from the middle of the pack, rather than leading wire to wire.

Who the Heck knows?
i see what you did there bill hader GIF

Are we going to see the starter play really well and then KF tell Lester that is our guy and the other guy gets 2 minutes of handoffs at the end of a big blowout win
I think they will both get an equal shot. It would not surprise me if whoever starts the second half ends up being the #1.

Just a guess.

Whatever. I just think it's ironic that Brown is starting when everybody wanted Heck.

It's almost too perfect.

But, Hank has more years under his belt. Giving the honor of the first snap to the one with the most seniority isn't a terrible idea.

Both will play. Hopefully both in the first half.

And hopefully one is clearly better. Not that I want either of them to play badly...I don't. More like: one is good, the other great.

My understanding is Brown earned the start by being the more overall consistent guy in practice. Heck has been wildly up and down. We’ll see if the “lights on” issues with Brown continue or not. My understanding is if Brown shows the same bad tendencies when the lights are on again, it’ll be Heck’s job. If he can show he’s gotten past those jitters, it’ll be his. We’ll find out in a few hours.

By "everybody" you mean everybody who didn't see all of their work since last January, and everybody who doesn't have the decision? Kind of doesn't matter what "everybody" wants, does it, or am I missing something?

Not the starter choice I would have made, but Hank WAS a star RB for Arlen HS. I suppose he can play QB, if necessary.

I agree 💯.

Frankly, I do not like an open competition to linger into the season. It’s not good for the morale and continuity of a team. Pick a starter and if you’re wrong, change it.
If Kirk Ferentz had a better track record of changing QBs when the situation calls for it, I would be with you. But history tells us that KF is loathe to change signal-callers, once he’s settled on one. That’s why I’ve been OK without a named starter for this week’s game. It means both guys still have an opportunity.

That said, I do hope we learn more today, and are able to head into the ISU game with a clear #1, for the reasons you mentioned.

Hopefully Lester walked into Kirk’s office and told him “Hey, this is who I am going to start tomorrow.”
That didn't happen when his son was OC.
KF has stated publicly that he is the architect of the Iowa program. Unlike everyone else I actually like that he doesn't try and shift the blame to his subordinates.
It's the simplest equation in all of mathematics.
When things go bad, he should get the blame.
When things go well, he should get the credit.
This is how life should and usually does work (unless your name is Fauci).

Correction, based on eligibility he's a 4th year player. I think the freshman-senior designation is gone for athletes.
I'm old, cut me some slack. Nomenclature aside, you understood my point. In a couple years, 1st year-5th year will change again.

In that case, it’s a damn shame our coordinators, specifically on the offensive side, don’t have more autonomy.

Kirk having anything to do with the offense / the offensive players that take the field / play-calling has very clearly been a negative for this program.

Yep.
He's brilliant on defense and special teams. And because of that he's gonna be in the hall of fame.
"At Iowa punting is not a bad word"
^^^ The problem.
At every other program it is a bad word.
But then again Meatloaf once said (two outa three ain't bad).
But dangit if there aren't days when it feels like it is.
