"Everybody says, Well, you got to win a national title. No, you got to be significant. They want you in the conversation. I've been here now six years. You got to win it or... No. They'd like you to win it now, they'll be depressed if you don't for maybe a month. But they want in the conversation. They want in the conversation in recruiting. They want in the conversation when you're talking one of the best teams. If they thought you should win it every year, we'd have 125 national titles. Doesn't happen. And they know that."

This is EXACTLY the way I know most fans feel. And, honestly, those expectations are NOT unrealistic for a handful of programs in the country, not just UK. I hate the way the media uses so much exaggeration about UK fan expectations.

I think this year it's championship or bust. Without a championship this year it will take longer than a month.

Totally agree. This year I will be especially heartbroken if it doesn't work out for these kids after all the extra mile selflessness they've put in for so long. But usually I just want a shot. And I know perfectly well I'm spoiled now by Cal; usually I just want the shot every three years or so that mortal coaches can provide.

Not this yr. not this team not being 38-0, this yr is different. This week is different. It's all or nothing now. Depression will last for generations if we don't win it now.

Cal knows this too.

He totally gets it. We need to be in the conversation every year. Nobody expects us to win it all every year, but we all want us to be in the hunt.

Re: So glad Caliper said this:

if he's talking about an extended run he's correct. however, if there's one thing uk was not use to before cal got here, it was losing in the final four. the three times we did it in recent history '84, '93, '97 are probably all on the short list for most painful games in uk history. because when we go to the final four we typically win. cal will do the same and it's all good. he's got the best team this time. i think he's just saying he's not going anywhere. at least that's how i read it. as for going 40-0, he's going to have to acknowledge that at some point. although he said "we" when he said that, the media doesn't care. i assume it'd be after the final game.

Re: So glad Caliper said this:

Agreed but this year sitting at 38-0 is different. I want to win the title for these kids even more then us fans. They have given us so much enjoyment since August and they have been so about the team and not themselves. Plus these kids could have gone other places and played alot more and stuff the stats but they did not and did what was best for the team. If we were to come up short this would take awhile to get over especially if Duke was to win the title because we all know we are better then Duke.

But the national media will never run with this, it's easier to say how unrealistic we are vs actually spending the time to research it themselves.

I agree expectations of a title with this team, this year, are realistic.

However, the point he was trying to make is UK fans aren't ridiculous like the media makes us out to be. I've heard Vitale, for one, say it over and over. We do not expect it EVERY year....when you are the favorite, the best team, sure, but not EVERY year.

LOL no i think he said what he meant. If you can get to the Final 4 4 times every 10 years that means you most likely will win 1 or 2 and 1-2 titles every 10 years or so is insanely good . I just want to be in the conversation of the teams with the best chance to win it and we are every year almost . I don't care if we lose in the final 4 some years as long as some years we don't . Cal has been to 3 so far (before this year ) and won one . I will take that every single time . 1 in 3 ? are you kidding me ? that's amazing . Coach K the best coach in bball history ( though not the best coach at this time ) has been 12 times and won 4 again thats an insane rate .

I will say this year it is different as it is like 96 in that anything less then a title with one of the 10 greatest teams in the history of the sport needs to win it . But if they don't they still will be my favorite UK team of all time . Hell my 2nd favorite is the 2003 and they didn't win it either.

Re: So glad Caliper said this:

To me it's no different this season. If UK comes out and plays their butt off and come up short there's nothing you can say. It's the NCAA tournament and everyone knows anything can happen. Most years the best team doesn't win it. Now, with that said they better win the stupid thing or I'm going to flip out man! 😀

cane,

I totally agree with you...even about the 2003 team. I loved watching those guys play together....probably the best passing team I've ever seen.

This thread makes me realize how many less laughs the world would have without the invention of auto-correction

The worst thing is, I didn't even notice on my first reply or two....I just thought everyone was being an idiot, and it turns out

I've seen the idiot, and the idiot is me.

Believe me, for us older folks '66 and '75 were the most painful anyone can imagine. They were for all the marbles, '84 and '93 weren't. All painful but not used to losing the championship game.

This year is extra special. Just finish.

With a team of future pros this year, experience with players coming back, and the great class of freshmen we have, and going undefeated so far, it would be an absolute shame if we don't win it all.

I was in high school when Flaget pulled a trick play to beat Trinity. (Obviously, this is a long time ago.) And I was steamed even when I got home from the game. My mother gave me a look -- just a look -- that let me know what an ijut I was. Lesson learned.

We are talking about games here. No consequences for the rest of life.

Regardless of the initial typo...

That quote perfectly describes the way I feel. I can deal with not winning. I'll be honest, I'll be heartbroken if we don't win it this year because I truly believe we're the best team. But I'll be ok. I'm happy we have made the Final Four. If we had been put out by Notre Dame, I would have been very disappointed. But from here on is gravy to me. A win over Wisconsin will be a tall task, but I believe our boys will get it done.

But when I'm thinking about why I had become frustrated with Tubby, this explanation nails it. The Cats don't have to win a title every year or even make a Final Four every year. I just want to be a contender. I want to be a national player. I think UK should be a national player/Final Four threat every season. I am not going to get ticked off at Calipari if they don't win it all this season and finish that 40-0 season. I'm going to be grateful he's our coach and we even had a shot at making history.

Back in Tubby's last years, the Cats weren't even a part of the conversation. I remember watching a game near the end of Tubby's tenure and Dick Vitale was commentating. His observation in that game was that the talent level of Kentucky was way down and that there is no reason for it. I think his quote was, "This just isn't a typical Kentucky team." Now, I had been hyping Bobby Perry, Lukasz Obrzut, Rekalin Sims, Sheray Thomas, and Michael Porter. I loved those guys and still do. And I loved Tubby and still do. But when he said that, I think we were playing North Carolina, and I looked at their team and couldn't deny what he said. It became pretty clear to me. That year ended with a #5 finish in the SEC, another 8/9 seed, and another early exit from the NCAA-T.

Bottom line: Calipari is right. It's not a national title I want every season. It's relevance- national relevance. I want UK to be in the conversation.
