A couple sources are saying that Preston Stone, the current backup QB at SMU (and starter last year) might be coming to Northwestern. He’s staying with SMU through the CFP which I respect, which could be a reason for him to wait to declare his decision. We will see.

3197 yards, 28 TD, and 6 Int in 2023 sounds pretty decent to me. Hope we land him to have more competition at the QB spot next year.

High school offers from…
Alabama
Ohio State
Georgia
Michigan
and most everyone else.

Looks like he’d be in final year of eligibility, but maybe rules have changed…

SMU’s starter this year is Kevin Jennings, who was recruited the year after Stone and apparently just beat him out this past offseason.

I think he has 2 years of eligibility left - he played less than 4 games his first year. Would be a huge get. We need to get it done!

Technically he’s played three seasons plus a redshirt year, leaving him with one year eligibility. But he could apply for an additional medical redshirt year, and if approved, would get one more year.

That would be awesome news (if true).

Interesting comparison with Pribula, the Penn State backup who left the team when he entered the portal. What if Stone tears up his knee in the playoffs? Who will want him? I reckon Stone is getting lots of money to stick around. And I reckon that SMU will try to knock Allar out of the game…

He was the starter all last year with outstanding stats. The article I read said that SMU’s QB this year is just even better, i.e. playoff team caliber. If Stone is merely a little below that, it would likely be a significant upgrade. no idea what his physical tools are, but seems more similar to Ben Bryant situation, an all year starting QB for a highly successful team that was transitioning to power 4 conference play.

He’s got one year left, is going to try to get a second via medical hardship but it’s an extreme longshot.

I saw the clip of Franklin at Penn State complaining about the portal system and how he didn't blame Pribula for leaving before the playoff game because the system forced his hand. He said for a position like QB, there are only so many spots and guys have to go grab them quickly. In this case of Stone, it almost sounds like there is some arrangement where Stone might be a silent commit to Northwestern and we are planning on him coming, but letting him wait until after his playoff game to officially do that. (For the sake of this argument, we'll assume the rumors are true.) Is this possible because NU's quarter system means we don't need to start the process as early as other schools? Is it because NU doesn't have the clout to demand that a player sign on the dotted line today? Why can't all players verbally commit to their next school, but still suit up for their current one?

Because most coaches don’t want guys on their team with one foot already out the door.

GC -- Please correct me if I'm wrong. My understanding was that a big NU recruiting challenge is NU's admission policy that an undergrad student cannot transfer in if more than 1/2 of graduation credit hrs have been completed elsewhere. Why would the SMU player be acceptable on that basis? Or will he have graduated already? (He'd thus obviously be eligible as a grad transfer whether or not his request for 2nd year playing eligibility is accepted or not, right?)

This is something that will get me excited, not landing a long snapper!!!!!!!

He’s a grad transfer. One year of eligibility (as of now).

Jennings with a missed TD and two pick sixes. Looks like Stone likely to get some playing time next drive…

Into this game he's not thrown.
But Cats' top target?

SMU QB throws 2 pick 6s. Maybe we'll see what Stone can do
Lol, I have been watching the game while doing other work.

SMU’s starter is TERRIBLE. Do they want P$U to embarrass them? Or is Stone just worse?

SMU fans are implying Stone is unavailable due to his forthcoming transfer, but who knows. Both coaches are tripping balls in this game.

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if SMU goes to the 3rd guy if this game gets too out of hand.

Jennings isn't terrible, he's having a bad game against a great defense. Entering this game, in 2024 he's completed 66% of his passes for 3050 yards at 8.9 ypa, with 22 TD and 8 INT, plus 5 more rushing TD on 4.1 ypc. That's not Heisman-caliber but it's very good.

Who did he beat?

He looks like a deer in the headlights. I’m unimpressed.

Wasn’t SMU in the AAC last season? 😂

Both head coaches are tripping balls too. Going in fourth aggressively is smart, but this has been psychotic on both sides and consistently been a disaster.

This game looks like last night though. One team has genuinely elite talent on the defensive side of the ball and the other team is just a very good overall college football team that isn’t necessarily stockpiled with 4-( star NFL style talent across the whole team, and the disparity is clear.

I mean he beat 6 bowl teams, 3 of them with 8+ wins, it wasn't like they exclusively played the dregs of the ACC. Again, I'm not saying he's the best QB in the country, but he's absolutely not a terrible player.

And I wish, you know, any NU QB could have put up a stat line like that in recent years.

Good players have bad days, especially against totally ferocious defenses on the road in the cold.

Right. Of the 102k, 60k must be the worst seats ever built to watch football. Sitting in those high end zone seats today must have been unbearable - unless they had piped in whiskey available.
