Our progress should be measured over generations, not over seasons.

50, 75, 100 years ago our games weren’t even on TV. We didn’t have stadium lights or The Boardwalk.

Compare the state of the program today and Schiano’s amazing legacy to your great grandfather’s gridiron squad and you will recognize how lucky you are to have Schiano in charge.

And your own great grandkids will probably see an 8 win team in their lifetimes.

Just can't get into high school level sports. I do attend some Monmouth games as its not too far away.

Yeah, HS games are meh, unless you have a connection to one of the teams. Been going to a lot of field hockey games (mostly Princeton, but also RU) which are normally played on Fridays and Sundays.

I’ll beat the dead horse….two words, student engagement

what does Rutgers do to engage students, get them to the games and give them a GameDay environment ??? Rhetorical as the answer is zero. If we’re a solid team or ranked and playing a name team, the students typically show up. Why not make the day a thing as well? Everyone here talks about our great tailgating areas/lots, but where are the students????

There’s no where for them to gather, congregate, or tailgate. Many stay of College Ave. The game is across a river in a different municipality for the majority of students. Until we're a consistently ranked team, the tailgate is still the attraction. These are the same students that will be expected to come back as young alumni, or alumni with children, or future donors. Give them something to remember.

The Boardwalk is great, for families. Students are not given a chance to purchase colored lot passes. No area is reserved for them to gather, congregate or tailgate. Friday night, my fraternity had a date night dinner cruise around NYC. This coming week, they're hosting a sorority and the alumni of both...on College Ave because there's no place to do it on Busch, or near the game. That's 500 people on College Ave. Same for other frats. These are exactly the students who are engaged on campus and most likely to return to campus as alums, but they are shunned by the school. IMO, huge miss

Nope. Completely off target. Students aren’t different. Consistent losing drains interest across all demographics. You note that but then redirect blame,

The attendance problem lies squarely at the feet of the coach.

Compare 4-0 UCLA’s attendance this year to last. Or 4-0 UMass. Or Indiana’s over three years. They have new coaches who are winning. Our coach loses year after yesr. 30% conference win pct and plummeting like a 58 yard FG try into a 30 mph wind.

Tell me what those schools changed in student engagement.

Student engagement has nothing to do with current or future popularity. Nothing.

Imagine you’re a student starting your freshman year at Rutgers, all excited for the college experience. Maybe some (or many) are not college football fans (yet) but decide to go to the first game with your new found friends, roommates, etc. Then you show up and witness a pathetic showing against UMass. Right off the bat you are disappointed and not excited about RU Football. That’s emblematic of what GS is doing to this program. There is absolutely no buzz about this program, no excitement, no interest. That’s after 18 years of coaching here. The losing and mediocrity has taken its toll.

I watch college football games throughout the weekend, as do most of us, and see packed stadiums, excited students, and important games. None of that with RU.

That’s the result with a coach making $6.5 million a year and due for a $500K bonus at the end of this season.

Why would anyone go to this game? Friday night, awful season, HC will be gone soon, opponent is a glorified high school team.

We went and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Big issue was the wind that made 69 degrees feel like 49 degrees. Many people left at half-time because they were not prepared. Surprising amount of students there during first half, but cold got to them as game progressed.

I also enjoy seeing the guys farther down the depth chart play.

Before the season even started, when they announced this game was being moved to a Friday night, I stated this would be a disaster for getting fans to the game. 7PM on a Friday, incredibly weak opponent, sandwiched between USC and Indiana, lovely Edison/287/Piscataway rush hour traffic, nobody was going to go to this game. Now add in our horrible start to the season and a nor'easter coming up the coast, and we got exactly what was expected.

Add in some big HS football games as well. Attendance was always going to be bad. I get B1G Network needed content and they got it. But Rutgers got no revenue from it.

If you go back to our second year in the big ten, the ushers were obsessed with keeping parking tight, so much so that you couldn't put up a tent when they walked away because there was no room

The Rutgers - BC game, a “close” game, was one of the most boring, hapless college football games I’ve ever watched.

The lack of fan interest and support is as important as a marker as winning. And right now Schiano has neither.

fan interest has been dramatically sliding since the inaugural big ten season. We can’t continue to lose generations of potential fans . Win or lose you have to capture and retain interest. Winning makes it easier of course.

Right now Maryland is at the bottom of the B1G, and it's not even close. I was a big Locksley fan. But after they retained all the promising underclassmen from last year I (and everybody else) expected better. Mike Locksley is a great dude, but it's time to try something else...

Exciting Football + WINNING + beating everyone you should beat + an upset more than 1 time every 20 years.....

.... = FANS IN THE STANDS.

This isn't the midwest. This isn't the deep south. We DO NOT have a "winning" tradition. WIN AND THEY WILL COME BACK. Students, alumni, casual fans and the rest. Greg Schiano, unfortunately, has EXHAUSTED every last bit of effort - emotionally, socially, physically, financially, etc - from the fan base and is losing class-after-class of students, as well, right now. IT HAS TO END. Anyway...

Franklin (former Maryland coach but likely unrealistic) and Chesney (would’ve been realistic) were out there last year. Waiting the extra year, potentially a lost opportunity for Maryland. Mind you there will still be good candidates this year and it’s way too early in Chesney’s UCLA tenure to say anything but he would’ve been a natural fit at Maryland being an east coast guy at JMU.
