Only a game and a half under his belt, but he's been a strikeout machine.

Second and third time through the order is going to be his challenge. He's getting guys to chase balls up the first time through. They will adjust to that. He threw a couple of nice changeups in the third....that will help.

So far this feels a lot like Stratton vs Gausman in Baton Rouge back in 2012. Hope we actually win this one though.

Damn. Southern Miss pitcher doing almost as good himself. They should have no trouble getting this one in before the rain starts. That is, if anyone can ever score a run.

I wouldn't say he's doing almost as good, even though we're scoreless.

We've taken 2 to the warning track, and we're not striking out 2 out every 3 times up to bat like they are.

Not really....we've been a little too aggressive at the plate early in the counts....and we've hit a lot of hard balls right at guys. Three hard lineouts to SS and a couple of balls caught at the wall.

And right on queue, Mangum on first with an infield single, and then Rowdey Jordan follows up by swinging at the first pitch and popping out softly to CF.

We've had some crappy at bats today.

no-no is broken up in the seventh as USM beats the shift on an infield single.

Not very impressed with some of our strategy so far. I don't like these shifts. It's too early in the season to have a reliable scouting book on guys to know whether the shift is effective or not. It's like we're just shifting automatically on good lefties.

Seems a bit early to pull Small after only 84 pitches. Great outing though.

As a USM fan, hats off. Haven't seen anyone do that to one of our lineups in a long time.

Makes sense to be careful in February and him having an injury history.

agreed... a bit more discipline at the plate might have helped. That was a damn damn good game. I really like our team. Hate we lost... but we're gonna have a good year. And I suspect the dirty birds will too.

I'd be ok with just being more disciplined at the plate...

Me too. I like seeing our confidence, but it feels like the discipline doesn't come until the later innings and we are behind, which is why I think these starters are having great games against us.
