His kid is on his staff though and they say he’s coach in waiting maybe he would stay at Houston cut his teeth and be a nice long term replacement. Or rondo either way idk why Samson isn’t being pushed big time

I'll be shocked if Mitch doesn't have a more diverse group of candidates than what we're seeing from people on this board, Matt Jones, etc. It's 2024. You can't just have three white dudes in the mix.
Who else you think are on it? Pope maybe?

I could get with a pope led team with a former cal player, rondo and someone like Scott Padgett a as assistants. It would be rough the first year but I think it could be longterm a good solution. We need UK guys who can coach and recruit. It’s why Duke and UNC have stayed consistent even after losing ratface and Roy.

Samson with rondo as an assistant to study under. That is a man who would bring a title or two. Far more solid than drew and hungry

And age isn’t a factor to me. Who you got as a potential sleeper?

I know you said age wasn’t a factor but Sampson is a great coach but he’s very old. We’d have to hire another coach in 5 years. I really don’t want to look for a coach that soon.

I don’t get the Pope hype at all. He’s never been past the round of 64. Maybe 10-15 years from now we can reassess him when ever this new coach moves on.

Im just saying if you need someone with experience to run the program and bring in a bunch of Kentucky guys around him on the staff. I think he’s a good coach he doesn’t really have very talented teams though. I think any mention of pope is because he is the best coach amongst our former players.

Like I said in 10-15 years, reassess and maybe Illl consider Pope if he has the credentials by then. But right now he’s too fresh a coach, and doesn’t have the credentials.

I was just talking with my brother in law yesterday about how Kelvin Samson would tear it up here if the A-listers turned us down. One more reason Drew getting the first call is……….MITCHlike
Got put on multi- year show cause for violations when he was coaching at Indiana.

Not sure. But I do like the Rondo-in-waiting idea. See if he can get that degree and stay out of trouble. He’d do well in recruiting and seems to have a great basketball mind.

Word I'm getting is Mitch's first question when he interviews each candidate is. Can you retain the greatest basketball player in UK history. Adou Thiero

That was a very long time ago when there were different ncaa rules. He’s been clean at Houston. Cal had a ff vacated before he came to uk and one vacated with a title game right after he was hired. You wanna win or dig even ruined skeletons like Barney. Gotta go for the Bible thumper.

Samson would be great except for his age and he apparently already has Houston gig set up for his son to take over.

Shaka Smart would be a sleeper. I think he's actually improved as a coach, which says a lot.
I actually enjoyed watching Marquette play this year, they were very good and I agree he’s gotten better. I just wish he would break thru and get a final 4 at these large schools. He had one of the best teams this year and feel shorter than many expected.

Calipari was never accused or convicted by ncaa on both issues. Sampson was bought red handed and had multi year show cause. He was banned from coaching

Golden at Florida would be a good young Coach to keep an eye on. If you really wanted to go young he would be in the mix for me along with Pope
Something about Golden has bugged me. I think he’s going to be a winner. I’ve often wondered if not hiring him now won’t be a situation we regret later. He’s good, Kentucky would make him great.

I agree with you about Golden. It doesn't feel like a matter of "if," it feels more like a "when." If we strike out on the major players, I'd seriously take a look at Golden. All it's gonna take is one run in the tournament and the floodgates will open for him.

I know, right. Dude has that hungry Pitino/Donovan vibes. And it’s really starting to bother me that we’ve been distracted by recent success of a few guys. We don’t want somebody who can say, “they wanted me because I was a proven winner.” Kentucky manufactures winners where everybody tries to poach our guy. I was 8 years old when Rick was hired and remember thinking it would be my worst nightmare if he ever left us. THAT’s the Kentucky Effect. You want what we got.

Right. They don't have to go with a totally proven. A Coach who must have already won his "one per coach" usually championship somewhere else with his "one per coach" fire in the belly halfway extinguished. We never did before. Not until Mitch being so scared of making a bad hire that he is playing it safe. I am 80 yrs old next mo. and wanted to be excited about the program one more time. But guess not with Mitch's Cal lite hire he's about to make.

I thought it could be Nate Oates or Rick Barnes but they have taken their name out or consideration. (Yes I’m gonna start putting Oates in this joke)

Making the tournament with a team recruited under BYU standards is a big deal. No booze, no caffeine, and a chaste lifestyle. Add to that academic qualifications, makes it a tough sell. His teams play an exciting style, shooting a lot of 3s. They hold their own in the Big 12.
He's not anybodies first choice, but he's got potential.

Pope is a good coach. with our resources and talent he could get, I'd pick him over anyone besides Donovan.
