I have some extended downtime coming in July and I intend on packing in a lot of golf during that time. Give me some suggestions on some great courses (with public access) to take a look at within a 3-5 hour drive of the Golden Triangle Area.

If I lived in the GT I'd only play waverly and mossy oak. You won't find two better courses in MS

Not sure if Pine Tree CC in Birmingham is still semi-private but if it is play there, Farm Links and Limestone Springs. There’s a Jerry Pate course 25 miles south of Birmingham in Calera, AL that’s nice as well.

Golf during the day and visit the local breweries at night.

I second Pine Tree CC and Limestone 100%. I was a member at Limestone while I lived in Remlap and it is a really beautiful course. Pine Tree is a challenging layout from the back tees though. I also second visiting the local breweries!!

Add Cherokee Ridge into that list (north of Arab, AL).

Also, Cross Creek and Terri Pines in Cullman.

Somebody mentioned Dancing Rabbit, and I'd hit the other casino courses up too. The Preserve, Fallen Oak (whether you can play without staying at the Beau changes), and Grand Bear are all good courses. I'd put all of them on a similar level to Waverly. Prefer Waverly, but not by a big margin. Would prefer them to Mossy Oak although, but not by a big margin. Just be prepared that Grand Bear is somewhat orphaned at this point and it won't be immaculate like the others that are somewhat subsidized by casinos. It's still well maintained (or at least was last time I went out there), just not immaculate like it used to be and like Fallen Oak is. But a great layout; better than Fallen Oak to me and about the same as the Preserve.

The Bridges is another casino course worth checking out. Some people hate it and think it's gimicky. Some people love it because it's so different. Shell Landing is also solid (don't think it's affiliated with a casino; used to partner with I think the Palace just so they could offer something golf related). I like Rock Creek outside of Mobile also.

The course south of Bham is Timberline in Calera right off I65
Also in Birmingham is Ballantrae in Pelham, Oak Mtn State Park course for $41.00 including cart. Limestone Springs is nice and reasonable. The Highlands in downtown Bham is a shorter course but fun and good views of Bham skyline - then hit the Breweries for sure.
Good People, Avondale and Trim Tab.
I’d definitely do The Azalea and The Oaks at DRabbit. Cherokee Valley in Olive Branch and all the courses on the coast that have been mentioned as well.
If you still have time I’d go over to Orange Beach/Perdido and play a couple of those down there.

I played a par 3 course at Trett Jones in Mobile. It was really challenging and fun. I am not a good golfer and only play when my company sends me to play. I have played some really expensive courses. Let me rephrase that. I have hacked some really expensive golf course for free. The Par 3 is really fun. A Lot of traps around the green.

Grand bear and the bridges are falling off. Replace them with the oaks. Preserve and shell landing are still great options.

I would have to disagree on Grand Bear and The Oaks. I have played Grand Bear twice in the last month. It was in good shape both times. I think they are putting more back into the course now. Also played The Oaks a few weeks ago and it was not in near as good of shape as Grand Bear. Shell Landing was good. The Preserve is on my to play list.

Kirkwood in Holly Springs is solid. Make your way over to Desoto county and Shelby County, TN and you will have plenty of options. Desoto: Wedgewood and Cherokee Valley. Shelby: Galloway, Mirimichi and Quail Ridge.

I would like to play the Robert Trent golf trail, but Zjust haven’t gotten around to it.

I'm a big fan of the course at Pickwick Landing State Park. Greens Fees are good all day, just pay for your cart as you go and you can play all day for pretty cheap. Also there's a quirky little 9 hole course near there in Counce, TN called Fox Chase.

RIP to two other nice tracks in Pickwick area, Shiloh Falls and Ross Creek in Clifton TN, about 30-40 mins north of there.

Check out Gulf Shores. Kiva Dunes, Peninsula, Craft Farms, and others. Plus better beaches vs MS.

Which one had the par 3 that you had to take a trolley car down to the hole? Was that Shiloh Falls?

Shiloh Falls had the par 3 across a cove of the lake. Tee to green was about a 90-100' drop. Going off memory here, but legend had it that the trolley snapped and killed someone back in the early-mid 2000's. They put a cart path down to the green after that, but that path was treacherous if it was dry and you were sober. A wet/drunk combo was disaster waiting to happen.

Course closed in '14 i think. Never heard why officially, but it didnt get a ton of play and i always wondered if they had another injury/fatality that shut them down for good.
