Just curious how many fans like the signal digits for being the hardest working player

Who gives a sh$t?? I mean seriously?
Just win some damn games that matter. Just restore pride in the tradition of excellence that red N on the helmet represents. Just go out and kick some $ss for a fricking change. Just make in game adjustments like you are a coach who knows what he is doing instead of a coach who acts like he is utterly clueless during a game.
Single digit jerseys? Gimmick. B$llshit.
Win damn it. Humiliate some people. Send them home weeping.

If they motivate players, I'm all for it. In high school we got gold stars for QB sacks, tackles behind lines etc. offensive side too. 1 player got a cherry Coke for the nastiest stick laid on someone in a game. Looking back, a sticker or a pop? Who cares. We did, a lot.

Was a cool idea until Jay Simms got one and royaly sukced.
Lame afterward in my eyes.

Glad they think they are good this year already.

I am a fan of results, not a gimmck, which our angry elf is. All gimmick.

It actually started during the Devaney era.

And I believe the players had to earn it every week it wasn’t a season long thing
John Melton talked about it on Big Red wrap up one night. It just started as a way separating the offense and defensive units in practice. They went to Lawlors sporting goods in Lincoln and asked if they had something. The owner said we have some black mesh pullover that we can’t sell . So Bob took them . The fans and media just took off with the idea . Melton said if we would have gotten green the defensive starts might be the green shirts.

George Kelly was the assistant coach that went to Lawlors and ended up with getting the blackshirts.

All it means is you're a starter. That's a factual objective measure. TO never meant it as some magical unicorn status indicator.
Tom would have never spent money on black practice jerseys. It started as a way to tell offense from defense in scrimmages. Nothing more. We used the pull over mesh jerseys in football practice in the 70s. All the sport shop downtown had was black when they sent an assistant down to get some. Wasn’t it Kip’s sporting goods? 🤔

That’s an ineffective gimmick. Something like the Westerkamp mustache challenge is the juice this team needs.

I have a Kip’s Sporting Goods store carved in to my brain from 50 years ago. Wasn’t there a Kip’s in downtown Lincoln in the 70’s?

Could have been I just remember Lawlors was a big store and that’s the one the Melton said they got them from
Oh I think you’re right. I just remember going to Kip’s I think when we came down for state tournaments in the mid 70s. Don’t remember Lawlors but it was there on O St at that time according to Google.
