Doesn't much matter to me... but if some of the players get motivation & competitiveness out of it then who am I to argue...
I was a big fan of it when LP wore #1, Eric Crouch wore #7, Lavonte David wore #4 and Ameer wore #8.

If the team is good, it has some symbolic meaning like what the blackshirts stood for for many years. If the team is not good, it comes across like a tallest midget award.

No player should ever feel special or better than anyone else at this point of the season. Leave the accolades for after the season.
If they motivate players, I'm all for it. In high school we got gold stars for QB sacks, tackles behind lines etc. offensive side too. 1 player got a cherry Coke for the nastiest stick laid on someone in a game. Looking back, a sticker or a pop? Who cares. We did, a lot.
Was a cool idea until Jay Simms got one and royaly sukced.

I have to remind myself that it’s kind of like letting the team choose captains. Not a fan. Meh. As you say. Just win.
All it means is you're a starter. That's a factual objective measure. TO never meant it as some magical unicorn status indicator.
And I believe the players had to earn it every week it wasn’t a season long thing
John Melton talked about it on Big Red wrap up one night. It just started as a way separating the offense and defensive units in practice. They went to Lawlors sporting goods in Lincoln and asked if they had something. The owner said we have some black mesh pullover that we can’t sell . So Bob took them . The fans and media just took off with the idea . Melton said if we would have gotten green the defensive starts might be the green shirts.
George Kelly was the assistant coach that went to Lawlors and ended up with getting the blackshirts.

We used the pull over mesh jerseys in football practice in the 70s. All the sport shop downtown had was black when they sent an assistant down to get some. Wasn’t it Kip’s sporting goods?

I have a Kip’s Sporting Goods store carved in to my brain from 50 years ago. Wasn’t there a Kip’s in downtown Lincoln in the 70’s?

If Rhule came in and won 11 games this would be a cool tradition. It's that simple. Instead he goes .500 and his stuff like this looks dumb.
