Weak minded fanatics? You mean the players who have coveted getting one over the decades. The media began to use the term because the coaches were using the term to refer to the first team defenders. Media references go back to 1964. NU actually fielded a number of elite defenses before the name was widely used. So no, not a symbol for weak minded fanatics. If anything, the players on the present team are trying their best to live up to the name. After years of term being a reference to past glory, the last two Ds have lived up to the name.

I wouldn't call a 60 year tradition that is nationally known a phony gimmick. The black shirts and low number thing are for the players, not the fans. One is chosen by the coaches, the other by the players. One is long standing, the other new. And those are traditions of the program, not the fanatics. There is nothing for me to defend. But it seems you find things to kvetch about.
