And that thread was locked before I could respond. It should be noted that, while the Dude abided the customs of his time, the majority of white Mississippians did as well, as did a not insignificant portion of black Mississipians.

The joke was and still is that if this idea gets legs we will all have some naming rights fund raising opportunities available for many buildings on campus. We could sell them to the highest bidder, provided that bidder could pass a social media background check.**

I don't doubt that Mississippi State was a part of segregation. But the name Ole Miss still is tied to the confederacy as is the nickname Rebels associated with the University of Mississippi.

I dont deny this or any other fact. It was a joke in response to the Clemson post by Eagle in the other thread and Biscuit asked me to explain so I did. You can lock it up if it is inappropriate.

Speaking of Ole Miss and the Rebels, if anyone ever tries to tell you that Ole Miss is not an allusion to the Old South, remind them that when the name Rebels was chosen by the student body that the other options were the Confederates, Stonewalls, and the Old Marsters. It was a possibility at one point that UM would have been known as the Ole Miss Old Marsters. The intentions behind Ole Miss and Rebels cannot be denied. I dont mean to downplay the facts about the Ole Miss history at all. I wish they were more well known so they couldn't be apologized for by so many.

I will do that in similar circumstances next time. Lock it up if it should be locked.

No worries. Do you think the name Ole Miss becomes disassociated from the University of Mississippi?

It should have been done when Col Reb, Dixie, and everything else was removed. I think we should go back to being the Flood and not give anyone the chance to screw it up as bad as we did the mascot search last time.

Whoops... I think the can gets kicked down the road until the moment it causes the university and our state maximum embarrassment.

For the record, I don’t think the name should change. Ole Miss or Rebels.

There is no reason to be offended over a name.

Now when it starts causing financial trouble to ole miss of course it will change and then it has to.

Mississippi flag? I don’t think it should change for the same reasons but I’m so 17ing tired of hearing abt it I want it to change.

If COVID does cause reduced fans in the stadium, it’s the perfect time for a name change. Don’t have to worry about people boycotting games when they can’t come anyway.

If it hasn't been brought up yet by the media, it probably isn't going to be. How it hasn't been brought up is beyond me. But like the NCAA/Freeze stuff, those ******** will slide by. If a change is made, it'll be with the association of the name Rebels but not the name Ole Miss. They will keep the name Ole Miss.

^^^This is pretty much par for the course for most institutions in Mississippi.

By the way, I knew you were referring to the Evansville trip in the other thread.

if they change the Rebels-what about the Fighting Tigers? That name didn't come from the love of a Tiger--but rather from Robert E Lee's elite Louisiana Regiment-the Fighting Tigers.
