According to who? That would be a bold move if we have spots open in February. We must be counting on a strong finish. Otherwise, it’s a mistake. Can always process these guys later if they don’t pan out.

According to every single one of our recruiting guys. They had no problem admitting that we got beat on a lot of guys. We didn't want Hayes. He is not that good. We don't need more bodies just to have bodies. We need linebackers and OL. We need receivers. We are not done signing people. We will add more in Feb and add some grad transfers and an "older" receiver. We don't have the luxury of just signing guys to make the rankings look pretty. If you don't think a kid can play then you don't offer him. Chasing a guy because someone like Yancy inflated his ranking makes you lose football games.

That’s not how I meant it, if that’s how it read. My broader point was that State is both in good shape at DT and recruiting well at DT. Ole Miss is neither. Hayes may very well be a great SEC DT, but there are concerns there. However Ole Miss was in a position to roll those dice. They wouldn’t have been if they had State’s depth chart and Cooley committed.

State, for whatever reason, never recruited Hayes hard. The reason is honestly probably a combination of both of our thoughts. Recruiting is not black and white, it’s very subjective. All I was honestly trying to convey was that normally when a fanbase says that they just didn’t really recruit a home state 4* player, it’s complete bull crap. In State’s case, this time, it’s probably not. If an OM fan says that OM just completely cut him loose, they’re lying, or WAYYYY more connected than I am, and know something about February that I am not privy to.

Fair points. I don’t think we are in as great of shape at DT as some others do (not like we’re in terrible shape, but some concern with how we’ll fare in the short term). We have a lot riding on the development of Pickering and Crumedy. Both may get there but neither was anywhere close to ready this year. This was painfully obvious in the games that Autry missed. I am excited about Cooley. I’ve just always been of the opinion that you can never have too many good DT’s in the SEC, and if there is a guy that has potential to be a good one or even just a good depth guy (like a Kobe Jones type), you always take that guy if you can.

I don’t disagree with your logic....I do disagree that he’s an obvious bust at this point. It would probably be one of the biggest discrepencies in recruiting rankings perception vs reality that has existed in a while. We have a long history of signing 4* players that everyone passed on that we thought could still be something special. Damien Robinson, Jake Thomas, Whop Jason just to name a few. For us to sign those guys and still turn Hayes away, he would have to really suck. And Kentucky has a coach that didn’t just fall off the turnip truck, he also knows you don’t sign guys just for the class ranking. Somebody is going to be way wrong on this kid if what you say is true. Hope it’s not us.

And like I said before, I can totally get him being overrated. But that could be the case and he could still be a Top 20ish player in the state.

Fixed that for you. And I'm sure Mullen's offense isn't totally appealing, but we could have gotten over that. I bolded the meat of your post above. Moorhead would not have quit on him.

I think you misinterpreted what he meant by “did more than they had to do”. Had nothing to do with the effort of the coach recruiting him, and everything to do with the reasons that everybody knows led him to OM.

I don’t disagree at all. You ALWAYS take a potentially good DT. It’s one of the reasons I liked Ole Miss’s switch to the 3-4 and was glad to hear Kiffin plans to stay with it whether he keeps MacIntyre or not. You can find more serviceable stand-up LBs in our territory than you can DTs. Especially given State’s history of signing and developing DTs, which greatly limits Ole Miss’s ability to sign them. Pure DTs are hard to come by.
