I had no idea until I tuned in to watch PSU vs ND in the NIT:

Rules the NCAA is testing out in the NIT:

• Extending the three-point line by approximately 1 feet 8 inches to 22 feet 1.75 inches, the distance used in FIBA international competition.

• Widening the free-throw lane from 12 feet to 16 feet.

• Playing four 10-minute quarters instead of two 20-minute halves.

• Teams shooting two free throws beginning with the fifth foul of each quarter.

• The shot clock resetting to 20 seconds after an offensive rebound instead of 30.

The 5 foul rule only makes the refs an even bigger part of the outcome.

I like when US and International rules become more standardized. Good for sports. Good for business. Well, except for metric. Kilometers are dumb.

3 point line and resetting the clock to only 20 after offensive board are great ideas.

The 4Q thing is THE WORST !! DO NOT slow the game down even more and make it choppier. That’s why I love college basketball and hate the NBA. The 20 min halves are great. LEAVE IT!

Widening the lane is going to take the post game out which again why I like college ball. It’s going to make it more of a one on one drive into the wider open lane

Several of these rules have already been implemented in the Women’s game. Worst of these rules is the 2 free throws after 5 fouls in the quarter. Takes away the 1 and 1.

Don’t like any of them except the 20 secs instead of 30 - makes for more scoring and potentially better shot for a team to comeback late in the game.

Quarters: dumb. Don’t like it in the women’s game, breaks up game too much. And 5 foul rule makes refs too important. Also, like the 1-and-1. Terrible.

The big lane is the worst of all. Totally changes the game. With the 3-seconds rule, the middle will be open more and will lead to more “players” instead of “team” ball. Aka NBA and not college/coaching with post ups and plays like that.

3-point further hurts the good shooting small teams that make the great stories. “The great equalizer”, well with that gone it will separate the power teams from the mid majors even more, just like football which I don’t like. Parody is what makes NCAA Bball so great, especially the tournament. Hopefully they scrap the bad ideas but we’ll see.

Wait, 4 quarters in NIT "breaks up/stops the game too much" but having a media timeout every 4 minutes with the 20-minute halves doesn't?

I'm not a fan of switching to quarters but breaks up/stops the game too much is a bad argument

No quarters.Would like to see teams given the option of free throws or throwing the ball in from sideline. If you have players that are poor free throw shooters it rewards the team that fouled.

I've grown to like the metric system with the notable exception of temperature, which isn't really metric. The advantage of the metric system is that distance and volume are related. A litre is 10 centimetres (four inches) cubed. If you had the metric system, you would never go back. But temperature is dumb. There is nothing metric about the freezing and boiling points of water.

Agreed. I was kidding. At least we’re not Canadians who use both. They measure in feet AND kilometers while using centigrade.

Kiwis use pounds when talking about newborn babies, and often use "stone" when talking about adult weight. Stone! And I'm not kidding.

I didn't like the quarters at first but it does speed the game up a little bit. Instead of TV timeouts at 16:00, 12:00, 8:00, and 4:00, there are two at 5:00 in each quarter and the break, cutting one of the TV timeouts.

Agree that change would increase stoppages. Do we now get stoppage at the 4, 8 and end of quarter each quarter?

Only change I like is extending 3 point line.

Hate the quarters....2 halves makes the college unique and gives it identity. Why change it??

I am not watching the NIT, and other than the championship game I almost never watch WBB, so I don't know the answer to your question about media timeouts in games with four quarters (I think that is what you are asking).

There's barely any post play in college basketball now.

I rather keep it the way it is, but moving the 3 point line back and widening the paint isn’t awful. I do think it will benefit athletic P5 teams.

Hate the other potential changes, especially the 4 quarters.

Wouldn't they just have the breaks be a little longer? One thing that will never happen is the networks giving up revenue by losing commercials.
