No one will convince me otherwise that Cal didn't get tossed on purpose. He looked like he felt really bad in pre-game and or he just needed to make a statement about officials letting stuff go out front while calling every ticky tack foul inside. It was just too strange to. OT be planned.....

I thought you were going to say you had watched the game 7-8 times lol. I was going to be very impressed.

I'm not sure if he got tosses on purpose or not...who knows. Regardless, the team responded and dominated. I don't think Cal can get tossed at A&M, FL and Vandy and keep having it inspire us...so hopefully the team can keep up this play without that type of deal next Saturday at A&M.

I posted the same thing just after it happened. This was a Norman Dale moment designed to pull the team together. Take one of ours down and we're gonna pull together and crush you.

It worked.

I thought that at first also...but after rewatching (think JFK & grassy knoll), I believe the first T was expected. The follow up with the ref did not go as expected, and in all of the excitement the second T just slipped out; like a wet fart.

This thread is just more evidence on how clever Coach Cal is. Several days after he was tossed, we are still discussing whether or not it was on purpose. The man is a genius.

Regardless of whether or not getting tossed was on purpose, Cal has clearly been frustrated by the way games are being called and he not only got the attention of BBN but the attention of the rest of the country. I had no less than 5 people comment on Cal being ejected at church yesterday. This isn't bball country. EVERYONE who follows sports seemed to know.

Correct me if I am wrong: We never saw the first T, right? So how can we analyze what Cal initially said or why he flew off the handle.

Sirmons came from across the floor to call the first T. That means Cal targeted him, right? So what did Cal say? Did he say "F you" or something personal? If so, the 2nd T probably was not on purpose.

This. He was ready to confront Sirmons. The over the back by South Carolina that was then called against Derek gave him his opportunity. I don't think he thought he'd get tossed 2:30 into the game, though.

I noticed just before tip-off that Cal looked like he knew a little secret that nobody else knew. He had a contented look on his face. After he got ejected I told my daughter that he did it on purpose. She said I was full of it. I guess we will never know if planned it all along or not.

Whether it was on purpose or not does not matter too much. Anyway, you can't ever know for sure what a person was thinking at the time. Even Calipari himself might not really have known it was going to go down like that. Had we lost, nobody would be saying Cal was a genius. What does matter more than anything else is that the team banded together and horse-whipped South Carolina.

Not sure he did it on purpose, but after the KU game, I'm sure Cal had something for Sirmons. I felt that game was taken from us. There was a long stretch late in that game where very possession KU had was either going to be a made basket, late whistle 2 shot foul or foul on the rebound and it was infuriating.

I think he planned to get a T. He has been foreshadowing this a lot lately with his comments about learning to play 8-5 and so forth.

I think it being Sirmons and the running T like that set Cal off. You could clearly see him asking "What are you doing" at one point to Sirmons.

The first T was quick and ridiculus. The second he lost it and couldn't get back after that.

It was apparent early on that Sirmons was going to continue the KU screw job right into this game. I suppose it's possible that Cal calculated that he couldn't both toss him out and continue the screw job. Who knows. We still got a bad whistle, but not Kansas bad.

Well we never can know for sure, but I am the opposite in thinking and no way did he want to get tossed. Did you see how angry he was? That was no act. He lost it. He was trying to protect Murray where first a call had been made on the other end against Kentucky and then right after that, that one South Carolina player who was real rough went right over Murray's back and there was a no-call. Then, the next time it looked like one ref called in our favor and I thought Sirmons was racing from the other end of the court to reverse the call and that is what set Cal off.

The only thing I seen that Cal did was asked another ref (not Sirmons) to bring another ref over to talk. That ref wasn't going to listen and stayed put. Sirmons was never involved except to sprint from the other side of the court to T coach up because he was screaming at the ref on the opposite side of the court to come talk to him. The camera angle got bad after Cals exchange with the first ref (the one who was on his was to the scorers table) but a friend who was at the game said that's all it was. Cal yelling at a ref that it was his call to make, why didn't he blow the whistle and why wouldn't he come over and explain it to him. Sirmons was never involved in any of it.

MJ just said that Sirmons called the Wisconsin, and Kansas games which had a few calls against us. However all games have a few calls both ways.

I don't think any coach tries to get tossed. Like him I'm tired of the lop sided foul calling. Do it at both ends. Another thing. It doesn't seem to make much difference even if there are now 3 refs. Give a person a whistle and it will get blown no matter what. just natural

I think he went in with a mentality of "I'm going to ride the hell out of the refs, and I may get thrown out today if I need to." I don't think he ever expected it to happen that soon, which is why he went ballistic.

Do you not realize how incredibly stupid that would be?

We played excellent, and so in hindsight you think Cal knew it'd light a fire under their butts, and they'd play great.

What if SC came out hot? What if they blew us out of the water? Now, the story is Hot Head Calipari can't keep his cool and Cats suffer.

There were some rumblings on Twitter that there was some friction at a recent game (the Kansas game IIRC). Frank Martin said over and over Cal seemed on edge. I think Cal wanted to tell the ref what he thought of him, and it got him tossed.

when cal was being shielded near the scorer's table and lashed out in front of the ref's face for the second t, cal was asking for that. he basically pulled the pile to the guys face and told him off using all his body language. the whole crowd saw him get in a clear f u to ref after already being t-d. you just can't show them up like that. that's wanting it. if i had to guess, it was planned. and it obviously worked.

Similar thing happened at Rupp a year or two ago with Roger Ayers. He was on the opposite side of the court, Cal wasn't talking to or looking at him, and he sprinted across the court to give Cal a T. I think Cal rubs some of the refs the wrong way and they stick it to him whenever they can.

I don't know if Cal got tossed on purpose or not, but some of the comments in this thread are priceless. "Cal felt bad before the game", "he had a look on his face like he had a little secret only he knew", "he has been foreshadowing this for some time". How does one dream this stuff up?

Your daughter said you were full of it? Can she still talk?

Lol I'm just glad I'm not the only one who thought that after watching it. It confused the hell out of me being so early for in the game

If you watched the replay a SC player bulldozed his way through Brisco. I'd be pissed

I have never heard a coach say that it is their plan to get tossed from a game in the first 2:30 mins of the game. I've heard coaches getting whacked on purpose and then getting tossed on purpose to get a message across to their team but never in the first 2:30 mins of the game. That usually comes later in the game. I honestly don't see how a coach could fly off the handle that early. I think there was something said and Sirmons, with his notorious short fuse, whacked Cal for the comment and then lost his cool. When Cal started to walk over to the table, the other closest official should have intercepted him before he got to Sirmons. Once he got to him, I'm sure it didn't take much for him to get the 2nd technical. If a coaches comes out of the box like Cal did to walk over to the table, it doesn't take much for him to get that 2nd technical. It's up to the other officials to stop him before he gets there if at all possible. After watching it, it looks like the other official is just late getting there. Still don't think it was on purpose though. Sirmons is notorious for having a short fuse.

He was not thrown out on purpose. No coach would purposely be thrown out 2 minutes into a game. I think he purposely got thrown out a few years ago against USC, but not this time.

I don't post very often, but I was watching the radio sync replay. At 26:20ish the live broadcast goes to commercial and replays the second technical called. To me it seems like Cal just says "Hey, why?" then Sirmons T's him up and that's when Cal goes ballistic.

If you've watched other replays of the confrontation, you'll see call fairly calmly walks over to him, then from what I can tell from the other angle asks him why.

If that's the case, no wonder Cal lost it and not that Sirmons had any respect before that, totally blows it out of the water now.
