Great job by the defense tonight - anymore it’s really difficult to shutout anyone!!

That 4th & Goal from the 1 was HUGE!!!!

Not only that, 1 penalty! When is the last time we’ve said that?

There’s lots of positives. Northern Illinois isn’t bad, and we beat them with tons of room for improvement. I’ll take that.

I hope Cam and Jaimes are ok.

The goal line stand was cool, though I'm pretty sure they got the TD on 3rd down. Unless the camera angle was able to bend space-time, the ball looked over the goal line.

The only camera we saw was from an angle... maybe from the 5 yard line or so. He may have been in but I don’t know how you make that call with that camera angle.

8 points isn't a shutout. That being said, they're much further along this year than I expected they would be. We have been strong in the secondary, even while dealing with injuries and we don't have as many glaring weaknesses as we've had the past few years.

It was close, close enough that if they called it a TD, they would have let it stand. That said, that’s a stand Nebraska hasn’t had against anyone in years.

Loved seeing both the Daniels brothers in during that goal line stand. They didn't give up any ground.

Other than the second half of the Colorado game, which I chalk up to just being tired due to the ineptitude of the offense, the defense has been great this year.

The offense looked better tonight, but it was NIU. I look forward to see what happens in Big Ten play next week.

I get what you’re saying, but no TD’s given-up counts as a shutout by the D in my book.

I think if given a time to rest, this defense is great.

It’s weird we run a defense with such a big front, when we have an offense that takes no time.

Also, I really am starting to take Urban’s take that Nebraska is tough to prepare for, as he states it every week.

I don’t even think the defense was situationally bad there. It’s the bright spot, along with random athletic players on offense.

I think it hurts cause I see the potential.

He bobbled it and didn’t have control.
Not to mention you couldn't tell exactly where the line was anyway when the camera angle wasn't right on the line. That's one you should let the call stand, which is what they did. No clear and convincing evidence to overturn it.

Chins seems like a good guy and he appeared to be stressed last year. Its nice to see his defense doing better this year so that he smiles once in awhile during his PCs.

Are you really arguing against an indisputable fact?
Actually, if you want to get technical (and apparently you do), the defense didn’t give-up a single point tonight - our special teams allowed two field goals (ie. 6 points) and our offense had a safety (ie. 2 points).

6 + 2 = 8

Care to try again?

Shutouts are a team effort. If it's the offense's fault, defense, special teams, it doesn't matter. The definition of a shutout is 0 points given up to the opponent. By the way, the defense put our offense in bad field position several times that they couldn't always overcome. Shutouts are incredibly hard to achieve. If any Alabama fans read this thread they'd be laughing their asses off thinking we pitched a shutout while giving up 8 points.

That is something I've never thought about. The defense gets off the field when the other team decides to kick a field goal. It is up to special teams to disrupt it...

If anything I’m happy that we can argue the about the definition of a shutout rather than bitching amd moaning about coaches, etc.

The title of my thread, as well as all of the commentary within was specific to the defense. Never once did I say that we ‘pitched a shutout’ in this game, in-fact I explicitly described how NIU scored 8 points against us - 6 points on special teams and 2 points with their own defense. The NIU offense scored 0 points.

If special teams blocks a punt or field goal and returns it for a TD, nobody would ever credit the defense for scoring that TD.

Special teams is 1/3 of the game and should be treated as such.

0 penalties and got off the field for the most part on 3rd as NIU was only 5-20 on 3rd down. Also if you look at the time possession NIU still had the ball for nearly 40 minutes. Defense held up well and finished them off.

Just my opinion, but it looked like the view we were getting was not directly on the goal line but a touch forward (towards the field) I think it threw off the angle and made it look like the ball crossed when in reality it didn't. I don't know if the ref were using that same footage we saw. If they were, then yes that should have been a TD.

That was some really solid defense. Damn it feels good to see a defense again that has strength on the line and speed at the skill positions.

That said I still have two concerns. First, we were still giving up too many pass plays in the intermediate middle areas of the field. Second, it was a real kick in the nuts to see Cam go down. That kid has “special talent” written all over him. I hope his injury isn’t serious because his skill set is very needed.

And where the hell did Eli come from? I love that guy.
