Shoutout to Adam Wainwright.

Two weeks away from his 40th birthday and he throws a complete game shutout on 88 pitches. Also had a single, double, and RBI.

A few years ago I thought he didn’t have anything left in the tank. His 16-19 seasons were not terrible but definitely below average and well below his career norms. But the last 2 seasons (one was obviously short), he’s been really good.

It's the secret training regimen--throwing bullpens into hotel mattresses. Really allowed him to lock in and focus on the mental aspect. He now doesn't have to see his spot to hit his spot, he just wills it there.

I started to post this last night, he was burnt toast around ‘17. He’s gotta come back one more year, I think he’s 21 wins from 200. If he could pick up 4 more this year or so he’d have a shot.

Is Wainwright a Hall of Famer? Feels like he's just on the outside, looking-in right now. And outside of adding a Cy Young (which won't happen since he's damn near 40 now) I doubt his can do a ton more to make his resume HOF worthy.

I think that’s pretty accurate. He’s been a good solid pitcher his whole career but is just outside of the hall of fame.

3 All Stars, 2nd in Cy Young a couple times, 1 WS ring - all in all a good career, but it's hard to say he is a Hall of Famer. In fact, his comparables are mostly Hall of Really Good-ers:

Yeah, I agree he’s just outside looking in but I wouldn’t be shocked to see him get in.

Kershaw having just some freakishly good years kept him from a cy young in either 2013 or 2014. I think you can make a good argument he should have won it in 2010.

That's interesting, in 2010 his stats were very similar to Roy Halloday yet Doc won the CY Young unanimously. Did the national media really love Doc or really dislike Wainwright? I'm a Cubs fan so Im biased, but even then I don't have any especial animosity for Wainwright. Did the voting maybe happen after that postseason no-hitter?

I think a good comp is Roy Oswalt, just on the outside. 2011 hurt him as he was at the top of his game but tore his Achilles hitting early in the season yet Cards still win WS. He would be right at 200 already plus the two rings that he would have been an intricate part of. Instead he just had to watch and postseason performance goes a long way.

I think Halloday threw a perfect game that year. If there is pretty similar stats that would probably be a tie breaker

We watched his postgame interview and he was asked about Greg Maddux. He said when he was with the Braves organization, Maddux offered to give him advice if he would come to the clubhouse at 5AM every morning. He said he regrets not doing it.
