Now I know what you’re thinking, “We just got torched by the 3 ball! That will just make it worse!” But hear me out. I’ve read other posts saying we should play zone. We’re not suddenly going to become a zone team. That’s not Pike’s style. But I think the pack line could improve the defense’s performance.
Since we lost Myles, our rebounding has been abysmal. Having everybody a little closer to the rim can help lessen this deficiency.
We’re getting exposed in pure man to man. The pack line makes sure everybody else is in help positions at all times. If someone is beaten off the dribble, a teammate will be there to keep the ball handler from driving for an easy layup.
The pack line calls for a ton of in ball pressure. One of the issues Through the first four games, I’ve noticed that when our team defends the ball handler beyond the three point line, they play too far off the ball to keep themselves from being beaten off the dribble. That’s allowing the other team to take wide open threes. The pack line makes sure that every shot is contested through on ball pressure and run outs.
Now, I’m sure your thinking, that’s great and all, but the shooters in the Big Ten will kill us. The beauty of this defense is that it can be adjusted. Any time we face a team with a catch and shoot Wieskamp type, Pike can make sure whoever’s guarding him will cover him beyond the three point line when he doesn’t have the ball.
We don’t have the athleticism to play pure man to man with many Big Ten teams, but we do have the length. Pike should use that to his advantage to mask this team’s deficiencies.
