Last night was my first trip to Allen Field House. I've been to the Palestra many times, Pauley Pavilion, and Hinkle. JMHO but it is really hard for an arena to compete with a field house for home court advantage and the Palestra is my favorite. They do a lot of things right. The creepiest is the stolid KKKKKKKUUUUUUUU at the beginning and end of the game. The best part was the blue mist.

The student section is very Cameron-like and looked fun even when KU was losing...But the rest of the place was very geriatric and very male (maybe 10 men for every woman in my section). Let me begin with the fact that I'm 55. The tickets I was given were in row 22 (face value $125 each). The lower section has 11 rows and the upper section has 26, so I was about 4 from the top, but they felt like great seats. It was pretty much me and a bunch old grumpy white guys. It was like watching a game with a room full of my uncles. Maybe it was because KU looked pretty rough for much of the game. I was surprised but maybe should not have been.

Looked like KU tried to take Murray out of the game and UK tried to take Ellis out of the game. Both teams struggled to get offense from other places. Both teams looked highly prepared and courageous at times, then lost and clumsy at times. Both coaches went deep into their bench throughout the game and significantly changed looks. I thought it was a true coaching duel between teams with many raw and flawed highly athletic players. After the LSU game I worried that UK might succumb in a tough road venue, but they started ready and continued to punch to the end. I was very proud to be there in my gear even in the loss.

Blue mist? I don't know what that is.

I've been to 200 games there, not sure what you mean that it's a male crowd. That does not fit my experience at all

Glad you had a good time, hopefully you were treated well.

Blue Mist is the group of UK fans that travel and wear their gear clearly. Didn't know any other UK fans at the game, but within a minute or two of getting to my seat had made eye contact with about 12 UK fans in every direction around me. In a crowd of KU fans we celebrated with each other throughout the game. There were shirts on our seats for the red/white/blue out last night, but you could see all the exceptions in every section like a 'Mist' among the other colors. I could have had seats anywhere (except the student section) and would have found several UK fans. The guy sitting next to me had sold his lower level seats for $5000 each. It was a tough ticket, but UK fans travel.

Jealous of the Palestra game, a bucket list of mine for sure.

When I moved from Texas to NY, I drove up and made a stop at KU to check out PA. A good looking campus and PA was just a cool place to check out, a lot of history there and they did a great job with their museum like area at PA.

I hope all UK fans that attended the game were treated well by the Kansas fans. Having Calipari back in Lawrence was good for Kansas fans. Many had forgotten what a great guy he is and were reminded how he contributed to KU basketball during the Owens and Brown years. He visited one the KU hangouts the night before the game and was very nice to the students.

I believe many KU fans that had ill will towards Calipari change their opinion of him when he came back to Lawrence. He was very gracious and stated that Allen Field House, Rupp areana, and both school's fans were very much alike, unlike the other blue bloods. Both fan bases treat visiting fans with respect and both fan bases cherish the game of basketball. We don't rush the court after a big win, with the exception of years ago at Allen Field House, 30 students tried to rush the court only for security to take them off the court with the remaining fans booing in incredible embarrassment. LOL, Calipari blamed Roy for that incident.

As much as many UK fans dislike KU, Kansas University obviously respects Kentucky a great deal and believed this game was the right time to hold the halftime ceremony for which Mr. Booth, the man who purchased the original rules of basketball, would present the original rules to KU. It was special having the two winning-est blue blood basketball programs on hand when the rules were unveiled.

In a way I feel that the game last night buried a lot of animosity between the fan bases. Maybe more so on the ku side.

It was an instant classic and one that I think each team benefited from.

If uk doesn't have their heads high and full of a confidence then check their pulse please. This team is going to be red hot at the right time.

Haha- amazing how classy KU fans are after a win in which they shot 47 FTs. I'm sure you'd be showing the same amount if you lost.

This post seems strange to me. Looks like you've been a member since March of 2010 and you have only ten (10) posts. Am I wrong about this ? I don't want to come across like a jerk but I just have a feeling you wouldn't have posted if your team lost the game. Gracious winners are a dime a dozen.

I went to AFH for the first time and had a great experience with the exception of the game's outcome. Kansas people were friendly and it is obvious they love basketball like Ky fans do. Lawrence is a nice college town and we enjoyed the downtown area prior to the game. Great basketball environment, no wonder Self was 200-9 coming into the game. Just wished Ky would have won...

CHAMPCAT: I would have posted the same had we lost. I was genuinely surprised at what a difference it was having Calipari in Lawrence again. It's easy to forget the things he did for KU when he is no longer in Lawrence. That said, we were reminded that he was once an assistant coach for Owens and Brown at KU. This week he was very gracious to the students and talked fondly of the program, fans, Allen Field House, and Self. I appreciate the things he did this week and what he had to say about our program. Win or lose, I honestly believe the KU fans that disliked Calipari have realized what a great contribution he made to Kansas, and that he is a great coach.

I live in KC and everyone I work with are KU fans. Frankly, many of them hate UK, but none have ever said anything insulting to me. I appreciate knowledgeable fans, and I respect their passion. Other than a couple of drunk students, I received nothing but respect last night. To defend them on one particular point, during the video about the $3.8MM Naismith Rules, they claimed 3 NCAA championships not 5 national championships.

I think you are off a bit. Ask ANY UK how much they hated Kansas before Cal came here. You'll find few. They may have disliked them as a "blue blood", but didn't hate them like Duke, UNC, Indiana, etc

It really started with KU fans when Cal got here and UK fans were fed up. Sorry, true story

The internet age has brought out a lot of really sad fans from all over - for all teams. Yet, it's fans like this that make me glad some of the good fans that are far more representative (overall) of other teams' fans show up to post from time to time.

I've always had great relations with KU fans, honestly.

I really respect those that I personally know, and next to UK fans, seem to be as knowledgeable about CBB as we are.

Duke fans and UNC*** fans, I can't say I know too many, but largely feel the same way about them too.

It's the IU and lil' brother bottom feeders out there that get my evil eye, even though I know and love some of them, as they are close friends and family members that support both UL and IU.

I'm just thinking maybe it's because Kentucky fans (many, such as myself) that are well known as UK fans, and that elicits an immediate, knee-jerk negative response from fans of those two schools.

Sometimes it just astounds me.

But otherwise, I wish KU well the rest of the year, and hope we can meet again in March or April and have another instant classic game.

Thanks for the post and report, dutycat. And thanks to the KU fans that have been stopping by. I hope you all will be cool with us getting 47 free throw attempts when you all come to Rupp next year !

hehehe, I couldn't resist !

peace out !

I hope Kansas loses every game they play from here to eternity. The ONLY reason that Self has that nice of record at home is because of the BS that was on display last night.

2013 Champions classic in Chicago, ku fans were more interested in cheering against uk than they were for their game against duke.

Had to tell a ku fan at halftime to stop turning around looking at me.

I've never had the chance. It's on my bucket list. If UK/KU can come to terms with a home/home I will get there. I knew before the game, and saw it over the TV. It's a special and revered place. We of all fans should get that. Our own coach talked about it with obvious respect. The acoustics of the place though are obviously more conducive to crowd noise than cavernous Rupp. That's one very intimidating environment to go into. One that has broken and crushed many a team. It didn't ours! And honestly it's the thing I've always been most proud of about UK basketball. We'll come into your house, and beat you there. We fell short of that last night, but we put up one hell of a fight, and never backed down for a moment in the face of all of it. I have to, want to, believe most KU fans respect that.
