Was it risk taking in getting Mike Riley? No. He was the best you could get after other people having turned it down. To think otherwise (that it was due to risk taking) is a massaging of reality. I think the here and now (since you want to be there) is a much different landscape than when Nebraska was able to have a better weight room etc than everyone else. The advantages aren't there compared to everyone else with the parity imho. You think wanting to "take risks" (whatever that means) will differentiate you/bring back the glory days? I'm skeptical...wishful and inaccurate thinking imho. I think Iowa is every bit as focused on being the best...they don't want to be average...they just have a different way of going about it and this way got them one play away from the CFP in 2015.
And I will say definitively that as long as Iowa continues to do it this way they will never be 1 play away from CFP again.

I love nothing more than an extended metaphor/analogy, so here it goes (not going all the way back to the '70s, though I remember those days):

We're 250 yards from the pin, and water guards the green.

Iowa has a tried-and-true strategy. You pull out the six iron and land it 80 yards from the pin, a few yards in front of the water. You break out the sand wedge, and more often than not you put it within 15 feet. Sometimes you birdie (2015, 2009, 2002), you almost always par, and very rarely do you bogey (how did you miss that one-footer back in 2012?).

Well, we've played this hole as often as you have, and we have the muscle memory of that string of double-eagles (1994, 1995, 1997). We know we don't always hole the damn thing, but there are enough eagles in our past (1981, 1982, 1983, 1993, 1996, 2001 to name a few) and lots of birdies that we weren't not gonna give up on that five wood.

So in 2004, we bought a new set of clubs. The store had run out of the high-end set, but there was a really nice used set that had an awesome five wood. We reached the green once with that set but three-putted, scrambled for par out of the water once, and bogeyed twice when we splash-landed.

That set was never going to do the job. So we went back to the store, and they had the set we wanted. After several tries and even a really nice couple of birdies, we eventually flew into a rage and dumped the entire set into the water, where we'd just landed a couple of balls.

In 2015, we just went to a garage sale and picked up a mismatched ladies' set, and even tried to play Iowa's "safe" game. We skulled the ball, sent into skipping into the water, and generally set the game back several years.

Now we've finally spent the money, and we've gotten our Mizuno MP5 irons and TaylorMade woods. We're ready to start shooting for the green again, fully aware that the first couple of attempts might get us right back in the water.

So disappointed we had to “settle” for Scott Frost this time around. Someone everyone wanted.

But go ahead and point out our failed last hire while ignoring this hire.
Actually, it's a striking the difference between where you were and where you are now with Frost. Timing is everything and here's to Nebraska not needing to look for a coach for a LONG time.

I think we all knew that was our shot for the foreseeable future. In 2002 we were ranked 3rd at the end of the regular season. I'd say (based on recent history) we get a shot about every 10-15 years.

And like golf (and Husker fans desperately need to hear this), you can only control how well you play, you can't control how well the other guy plays.

Iowa's been mopping the floor with Nebraska. It's Nebraska that truly sucks. Not your rival? Who is, let me guess, Oklahoma? lol
Yep, congrats on the 7-5 season.
in a rebuilding year with a tough schedule we finish 7-5. I will take it, next year will be better. Trash talk from a fan of a team that finished 4-8 and lost to Iowa for the third year in row? Smart very smart

@hawkbleeder How big of a search was there before we got Riley? Because what I remember is Eichorst going directly to Riley. Who also did he inquire? And if I remember right Chris Petersen said he was interested in the job.

I don’t know about Petersen, but Gundy wanted it. We have really sucked at hiring coaches. Riley over Gundy, Pelini over Patterson, Solich over Mack Brown.

Tin Cup ****ing sucks. Truest test for finding out if someone is a golfer. Ask what their favorite golf movie is, if they say Tin Cup, hacker at best.

Really? I always liked that movie Haven’t seen it in so long. Tiger Woods said it is one of his favorite movies, he always was a hacker...

I guess this is the way to look at it. Yes Iowa has been mopping the floor with us the last 3 years and that is why we fired our coach. Prior to that, Ferentz was 1-5 against us and you were more than happy to keep him. Now I'm not saying that is bad.......but it tells the story of different expectations and explains the analogy that was being represented in the article.

Did the posters above actually read Shatel’s column (the last post being clearly the dumbest)? It wasn’t about Iowa compared to Nebraska. It was spot on account of our journey back to Frost, back to our roots and hopefully back to where we should be. He writes about finding ourselves again, in a similar path to how Scott found himself. Read the damn column before you to stupid, off the cuff reactions.

Thanks for the post. I hate the fans who constantly bag on the writers. Barf is an example. Yes he has bagged on our program and coaches in the last 15 years. Why should he get beat up for being right. If you went back and read some of his articles about Mike Riley now that everyone bagged on him about a year ago we would probably see a guy who recognized the problem a long time ago because he wasn't wearing the rose colored glasses.

Breaking news! Iowa has signed a lifetime contract to participate in the Pinstripe bowl.

Careful there. We aren't even going to a bowl......well the peach bowl in heart. No reason to cast too many stones in a glass house.

Cuz I got banned from my own site due to the political OT forum lol (let's put it this way, I'm not a Democrat). So...when someone comes after my Hawkeyes with total disrespect, I react with some truth of my own.

Got banned because he isn't a democrat in Iowa? I'm starting to like this guy. Someone hand him a Scott Frost Hat and maybe we can flip him.

I didn't read the column. I think the entirety of the Nebraska media is incompetent. Did any of them mention three years ago that Riley was an unsuccessful coach that had driven the OSU program into the ground?

And that is my complaint about his stupid analogy. Nebraska fans lost their zeal to go for it when they embraced Mike Riley with no realistic hope that he could succeed because he was nice and the Nebraska media told them he was a great guy. So, as usual, Shatel makes stupid crap up.

Actually Barf publically questioned the hiring and proceeded to damn near get fired if I remember right. Rumors were WH (because of a SE request) told him to lighten up if he wanted to keep his job. After MR started with a losing season they loosened the reigns on him

Well you aren't much of a golfer if you don't think your play can effect another golfer in head to head play.

I suppose you are still holding on to Oklahoma! Talk about living in the past! As a new member of the BIG Nebraska is like the kid that moved to a new school. Misses the old friends and denied the fact that nobody at the new school really cares about the new kid until they can be shown the new kid really brings something new to the table except past perceived glories

Exactly, Iowa beat up on Riley and now he is gone. Everyone beat up on Riley teams, but Iowa is a the only one that doesn’t care about anything else. So what if we lost 5 or 6 games again we beat Nebraska. I guess that’s what a lifetime of being jealous of your neighbor gets you. But now things will be back to normal. Heck even Bo Pelini owned Iowa.

Yet here you are obsessing with Nebraska on a Nebraska message board, pretty ironic.

No disrespect here, but Iowa isn't even trying to win. Iowa has beaten Nebraska 3/4 times -but that clearly says now about nebraska than Iowa.

I think the analogy is pretty unfair because one perspective gets to be the Iowa administration and the other gets to be Nebraska fans. I get tired of hearing “you accept mediocrity”. As if I don’t want Kirk out the door. There are a lot of people that want better but there is also a pretty stiff contingent of people who are fine with what Kirk offers.

As mentioned above and with every Iowa thread, Iowa has been mediocre but there are some fans that will try and put lipstick on that pig.

We were ranked #4, go head and be petty, don't care. Shall I bring up the lame Big 8 when you had all of your success or that we've been destroying you the last several years?

Just like the Big 10 in those days was Ohio State, Michigan, and the eight nobody's. The difference being Nebraska and Oklahoma actually won National Titles, Ohio State and Michigan "not so much"

The stiff contingent of people who say they are fine with what Kirk offers are afraid to be without him. Those are the fans/group that keep Iowa in the middle and the West weaker than the east.

Yeah. They like to say “well you’re not old enough to know how bad Iowa was in the 70’s. It could be that bad again.” It’s pretty laughable.

With what Kirk has returning and the schedule, less than 9 wins should be fireable in 2018.
