I thought this passage was clever:

One of my favorite movies is “Tin Cup,” and I like to equate Nebraska and Iowa as the main characters in the movie. Both have their own beliefs. Neither one is wrong.

Iowa is David Simms, the veteran tour pro who plays by the book and doesn’t take chances, will take par if you give it to him. Iowa has a coach it likes, and though Kirk Ferentz loses five games most years (seven of the last eight), he throws the fans a bone once in a while and is their kind of guy.

Nebraska is Roy McAvoy, “Tin Cup,” who is a dreamer and risk-taker and lives to go for it. Husker fans have never lost their zeal to go for it, to keep pushing for national relevance and a coach who will take them back to the promised land. They kept reloading and taking their shot.

Just as Simms (“Nice 12, Roy.”) and McAvoy (“Nice par, David.”) go at it in the movie, Nebraska and Iowa fans go at it, shaking their heads at the other.

Here's the column.

Actually, i think it is about the most spot on comment about these 2 programs I’ve ever seen. Iowa always has been perfectly fine sitting in the middle of the road as an average program. Beat a good team once in awile, go to do a good bowl once in awile, etc. and they are happy with that.

NU are the risk taking neighbors who win a million dollars, go broke and then try again :p

Yup, king of the midgets of the B1G W :p Gratz! I love the concept that rivalries can be manufactured. No, sadly Iowa is not a rival. There is no history, no tradition and nothing of any meaning in it. We haven't had a true rival since the Big 8 became the Big 12 and OU went to the south and NU to the north and stopped playing every year. It was the same when CU tried to make NU a rivalry game, you just can't make them up "just cause".

Iowa isn’t the king of anything, Wisconsin has owned the west. Iowa is just happy not having a terrible season. 7-5, good enough. Just regroup the old Wilson’s and go at it again next year. We went out and bought a shiny new driver, btw.

Did the posters above actually read Shatel’s column (the last post being clearly the dumbest)? It wasn’t about Iowa compared to Nebraska. It was spot on account of our journey back to Frost, back to our roots and hopefully back to where we should be. He writes about finding ourselves again, in a similar path to how Scott found himself. Read the damn column before you to stupid, off the cuff reactions.

Iowa's been mopping the floor with Nebraska. It's Nebraska that truly sucks. Not your rival? Who is, let me guess, Oklahoma? lol

Why are you even over here on a Husker Board lurking? Go over to the Iowa Board and provide them with some encouragement and words of wisdom. Last time I looked everyone on the Iowa Board was doing nothing but complaining about Kirk and his boys.

The difference between the two programs...NU will actually try to get the correct pieces in place to succeed while Iowa seems to care less and will just continue to ride to church in the Rambler.

Once you’ve been to the mountain...even in the distant past...you know what it feels like and will strive to get back. Iowa on the other hand has never been to the mountain! In other words...Iowa has grown up eating moldy bread and has never tasted cake! One is far superior to the other!

Shitell sucks too. So does Barfknecht.

Shitell is so two-faced that I wonder why he wears the ugly one daily!

Barfknecht goes out of his way to hate on Nebraska that it does make me barf.

Their names truly do fit!

Geez man go get yourself a nice breakfast start the day over. They’re paid to write articles and you may not always agree.... That Tin Cup analogy is pretty legit

Cuz I got banned from my own site due to the political OT forum lol (let's put it this way, I'm not a Democrat). So...when someone comes after my Hawkeyes with total disrespect, I react with some truth of my own.

I didn't read the column. I think the entirety of the Nebraska media is incompetent. Did any of them mention three years ago that Riley was an unsuccessful coach that had driven the OSU program into the ground?

And that is my complaint about his stupid analogy. Nebraska fans lost their zeal to go for it when they embraced Mike Riley with no realistic hope that he could succeed because he was nice and the Nebraska media told them he was a great guy. So, as usual, Shatel makes stupid crap up.

Tin Cup ******* sucks. Truest test for finding out if someone is a golfer. Ask what their favorite golf movie is, if they say Tin Cup, hacker at best.

That's actually a good point, i like the, but it is hacker movie. Perhaps the best golf movie analogy, is the greatest game ever played?

So tell me you aren't jealous that we at least try to get above mediocrity. Iowa is satisfied with it. For all the years Ferentz has been HC, there have been precious few years with less than five losses. I'm sure you hope he has at least another ten years in him.

Not jealous at all. We were undefeated going into the B1G Title Game in 2015 and lost at the very end.

That's what I was afraid of. You had the easiest B1G schedule in decades and to your team's credit they won all of those softies including us. (OK, you did play Wisky.) Then 2015 postseason and the next two seasons happened -- and poof, you are back to LLLLL reality. 4-8 or 7-5, what difference does it make? Just degrees of irrelevance.

PS About that great 2015 regular season tell us how we can miss both Michigans, OSU and Penn State in the same year.

We were ranked #4, go head and be petty, don't care. Shall I bring up the lame Big 8 when you had all of your success or that we've been destroying you the last several years?

Lol @ "ranked #4". I normally can't stand Colin Cowherd, but he was spot-on in dubbing Iowa the fake ID of college football, equaled only by our "top ten" ranking last year when we were 7-0...

Such a "coulda been good" movie if they didn't turn it into a stupid chick flick...something Costner really enjoyed doing, chasing around some ugly hag the whole movie...tin cup...bull Durham.... Ugh. Ruined.
There I said it.

So what? We were undefeated going into Oregon this season and lost in the first 5 minutes. And also didn't win a title.

If titles are all that matters to you, then you should probably know that Illinois's past national titles are listed on their press box too. Golf clap.

I would prefer to focus on the here and now. As I've said in other places, some fans and programs are OK with average. And I'm not knocking that. They want to have decent seasons and a good bowl game. Every once in awhile knock off a big team. That is Iowa's wheel house. It has been that way since Hayden Fry. From the outside looking in, it is hard to tell the difference in the program from then to now. Nothing wrong with that.

NU is more interested in risk and reaching the heights and often failing. That is what we like and what we do. We are now tasting and "enjoying" the lowest point in our modern history, at least since right before Devaney. What can I say, we like roller coasters. You can't experience a world of color when you've only seen black and white.

The B1G won 1 national title during T.O.'s tenure. The Big 8 won 9 (by 3 different teams). But really, the 22-2 record (and 3-1 over the Hawkeyes) we had over the B1G in the same period is the only thing we have to go on if we wanted to be objective about it.

And this is why we play the game as they are not played on message boards.

Nice hire in Frost and think he will do a great job for you! Good luck in the future!!

Was it risk taking in getting Mike Riley? No. He was the best you could get after other people having turned it down. To think otherwise (that it was due to risk taking) is a massaging of reality. I think the here and now (since you want to be there) is a much different landscape than when Nebraska was able to have a better weight room etc than everyone else. The advantages aren't there compared to everyone else with the parity imho. You think wanting to "take risks" (whatever that means) will differentiate you/bring back the glory days? I'm skeptical...wishful and inaccurate thinking imho. I think Iowa is every bit as focused on being the best...they don't want to be average...they just have a different way of going about it and this way got them one play away from the CFP in 2015.

What are you doing? Hawkbleeder made it clear the big 8 sucked when we were there! Why bring in national championship facts? Stop ruining his thunder!

Well done... I would have thought that would have shut him up, but I see he is still posting after that beat down.

So disappointed we had to “settle” for Scott Frost this time around. Someone everyone wanted.

But go ahead and point out our failed last hire while ignoring this hire.
