....Shaq's son is now 6'11", and he told us Kobe is going to be mentoring him starting this year.

Dan asked him if Shareef was a OAD, and Shaq said no, he will probably be at least a 2 year college player.
He was talking about trying to keep him there 3 years at least if he can, because FICA will be after you.

Call me crazy, but expect Coach K to be huge in this recruitment due to Kobe.
No offer yet, but LSU and 4 others have offered, and he wants to hear from Cal.

Is he a forward or a center? I'll admit I don't know much about him, but if he's already 6'11" and has Shaq's DNA then I'd guess he'll end up being more of the latter.

Don't you know? No one is a center any more, ever. You might get 1 guy in 10 who's 6'9" or taller who doesn't mind being called a center, but the vast majority want to be the next Kevin Durant (often in cases where that idea is patently absurd).

As far as I'm concerned call them whatever they want to be called. Then play them in the way that most helps the team (which usually means playing center).

Yep, I have indeed noticed that, nobody wants to be called a center nowadays, even if center is what they actually play. And, similarly, you also now see tons of guys who insist on listing themselves as guards even though they spend all their minutes at the 3 or 4 spots.

Players today just seem hell bent determined to be listed at the smallest position possible, regardless of the position they actually play. I don't get it. When did it become bad to be a big man?

At 7'3 and 328 lbs, I fancy myself more of a sturdy point with a strong perimeter game, but who is good for at least 3-4 rebounds a night.

Give me balance. In the college game, nothing beats a roster with traditional balance at each position. A true point guard that makes players better. A true SG who can drain at a high clip and defend. A true wing, with the ability to play inside and out and run like a deer. A power forward who is a stable force on the block that enables a center like Shaq to dominate.

But like Cal said, if he could just get cousins to understand he's not a point guard, he'd be the best center in the game.

I think it's really too early to tell if this kid is going to be a onendone type of talent or a upperclassmen type. He has time to work on his game and with his name, he will get noticed often. If Shaq is the kid's dad, it would be hard to imagine this kid playing outside the paint. Let's hope Shaq doesn't teach the kid the art of free throw shooting!

Shaq was 6'6 230 at age 13. 7'0, 280 freshman year at lsu. Last I saw his son was 6'8 180 (age 16), but now 6'11 apparently and probably like 185.

The traditional answer to that has been that the NBA is looking for the tallest possible guys at each position. A 7 foot forward sounds appealing on paper. So few teams are playing a traditional 2 big (as in center and bruising power forward) lineup now that I don't see how it matters much anymore. Yet it persists.

I would also add that the center position has come to be viewed as being for big stiffs who lack versatility (maybe because the low-post game has become far less important). High school kids pick up on that, and don't seem to grasp how incredibly unimportant college position is to the NBA. It's all about what a guy can bring to the court, not what position he was listed at in college.

I think that one of the best things that happened to AD and Karl Towns was them being forced to play center. You have nice perimeter ability, great, but you're far more valuable if you mix that with being a beast in the lane on both ends.

Yep. When Boogie first arrived he had some of that "forward wannabe disease" too, thinking he should be shooting outside shots and dribbling around. Cal cured that in a hurry, letting him know "NO, you're a big man, ONLY a big man, now get your *** down in the post where it belongs..." And, fwiw, it's the same thing Cal did for KAT, who came in with a rep for being a jump shooting perimeter player until Cal said "NO, you're a post playing center...."

That message ended up being the best thing that ever happened to Cuz and KAT. Too bad it didn't work as well with Skal.

Meh... I don't spend much time lamenting the plight of kids born with a genetic golden ticket body and to a daddy worth around a half-billion dollars. If he's compared he can deal with it.

my question is this: how is he as a player? I know he's tall, but can he actually play, or does he get the benefit because of who his father is? Remember MJ's son? He really wasn't that good at all.

Check the video right above your post. I found a pretty good video displaying his skills. He doesn't play like Shaq at all. He has a serviceable jumper, very long, not crazy athletic but he will probably be 7 feet+ before its all said and done. His best part of his game is slashing now. I think he will grow into an elite prospect.

The people commenting on KSR's Facebook post about this were saying he'd be a walk on at best and he'd never get any PT. :eek:kay::joy:

Facebook comments are getting to be nearly as toxic as YouTube comments were in the late-2000s.

He will be a junior this coming season. Given his size, and ability to dribble and shoot, and the fact that Kobe is going to train with him I can easily see him being a top 10 player in 2 years when he graduates. He is not trying to be Shaq, if he was SHAQ would be training him. This kid is a gem in the making. Remember this, Anthony Davis as a sophomore was a small guard on no ones radar, then he took over the world.
