Is there any word on why he’s not playing? We have zero inside game? Did he get injured again??

Maybe because Coppin has a lot of small players, not a good matchup for Shaq. Florida State has a 7'4" player, think Shaq will play a lot that game.

Wish we had something more definitive. All minutes valuable for his continued development, so him ghosting doesn’t feel good or right at all . . .

He still should get a few minutes because he can dominate inside on put back shots.

Him not playing last 2 is a concern..if we are worried about matchup issues with coppin thats an issue onto itself
This is no concern at all. We have a million games against weak competition over a short window. We don’t need him chasing 6-5 guys around in blowouts. And he’s not an offensive threat against anybody. There will be plenty of opportunities to contribute his 10 minutes a game and a few fouls against bigger teams.

I think Pike is prioritizing defense right now, and Doorson is too slow of foot to guard these smaller guys who like to step out of the paint. We had Omoruyi playing center with Freeman at PF at one point late in the game, and we still had ~2 inches on their bigs.

Agree...Having a 7 footer playing against a small guy like that is silly. Regardlesss of the opponent...you matchup, because you may be faced with a similar situation later in the year.

I think the people who say we don't need him chasing around smaller and quicker players nailed it. He's best guarding guys his own size.

Pikiell said in post-game that it's problem matchup wise. Shaq cannot guard 6'6' forwards who are going to run all over the place. It's absolutely a matchup issue. He'll play more the bigger the opponent is.

It also goes to show how worthless playing so many cream puffs is. Schedulemandering to add a bullet point to the recruiting materials about improvement does very little to help prepare the current team for real competition.

I’m not sure why Shaq wouldn’t play for the simple reason that Eugene is not going to be our post up presence in Big 10 play. He was outstanding today and getting better but we need Shaq.

Shaq will not play a lot later, either. Eugene will see many more touches in the post. I don't know what you're watching but Shaq doesn't post up anybody.

Doorson has not played in two years. Why are we surprised? Doorson will see 8 minutes tops this season.
Well if we are redshirting Johnson for whatever reason and you look at Sa’s production, who else do we have to post besides Doucoure?? Every team we play in the Big 10 has at least two big guys who post and create space and separation on the floor. Now I realize how much we miss Getty’s.

That was a poor 25 point win today.

I tend to agree here, this is a kid that has played sparingly..so the idea that you would not want to get him comfortable on the court against any opponent is pretty telling

This is a schedule and goal to get matchups and we have 18 B1G opponents, FSU and SHU that will offer size and bulk to matchup against....Doorson will play 10-15 minutes a night against those opponents, since I'm anticipating Doucoure being in foul trouble a lot and Sa isn't going to be a 20-25 minute a night player.

The schedule is horrific, but I think we would be 100% right to be critical if we didn't have 3 legitimate scrimmages against Monmouth, Yale and St. Johns....the matchups there were more important than these 4 to 6 games before FSU....and if we lost by 15 to St. John's, then Doorson not playing would make sense.

We have Geo Baker and Doucoure playing their first college games and they are freshman asked to contribute....we also have Eugene and Thiam who have essentially not played significant minutes with the scoring. The confidence could be false, but I think the team isn't asking Doorson to score as much as he's needed to take up space and keep teams off the glass. We are not giving up a ton of offensive rebounds to teams, which is most important.

Doorson just isn't very mobile, which is why he's the 3rd center. Doucoure and Sa don't have Doorson's height/size, but they are more mobile and have quicker feet. We haven't needed to dip down to our 3rd center in the last couple of games, which is good.

If the pattern continues, I don't expect to see him much against Bryant on Tuesday, either. They have 4 guys listed on their roster over 6-7, and just 3 have played this year (2 were 6-8, 1 was 6-10).... for a total of 29 minutes across 3 games.

East Carolina also has 4 guys who stand over 6-7, but they all play more significant minutes. Haruna is 6-11 and plays 8.3 min/game, and Craig is 6-10 and plays 22.0 min/game. I'd imagine we'd probably see more of Doorson on Friday.

For sure. I do not expect much at all from Doorson this year. His matchups with how the game trends are not going to have him in there most nights.

Yes, not mobile and no coach in America plays a immobile 7', 275 Center against a 6'6 guys.

You create your own matchup advantage the other way on the offensive end. The bottom line is he isn't an offensive force.

Yup. Steve was just being kind in his comments. Terrific kid, but Mr. Doorson is basically a non-entity basketball-wise until proven otherwise.

Exactly...but his 5 fouls and ability to take up space in B1G games, will be needed. Any scoring he provides should be considered a bonus.

Even if it's only 8-10 minutes/game, we're better with Shaq. He's shown the ability to eat space, alter shots, and rebound. Plus, with all he's been through with his foot, I expect him to be hungry as hell when he's on the floor, and bring a lot of positive energy.

I'm thinking Doorson needs to play to get back into shape. I'm thinking his foot is an issue as he should be getting some time in to get ready for B1G play.
