If Spencer didn't like him then he wouldn't even be there or in that position.
Maybe I'm giving Royce too much credit, but I think he was trying to keep the moment light. He knew Spencer was emotion dumping and was attempting to keep him mentally in a good place.

And Royce saying, "you won it for both of us," isn't taking the spotlight. Royce got a world silver and it's always been a failure to him, just like Terry and the Olympics. It's his way of saying he can move on, that's how impactful it was for Royce. In that light I think it's a helluva compliment.
Appreciate this take, and don't underestimate the positive effect that Royce has had on him....Royce does not deal in the fake world nor does he smooch hind-ends; he shares what he sees, harsh or not...
Hell yes Spencer Lee!

The last few months haven't been easy for Spencer but ACLs are for wussies. I knew it would come out once worlds was over. Spencer is one tough SOB
Ya think? Taken into deep waters in the semis and just dug down and got it done. This kid has been through a lot obviously, what he has accomplished as likely the most oft injured high end wrestler in USA Wrestling history is truly amazing.

Well done Spencer Lee. He's taken us on one hell of a ride. Wow.

Spencer acknowledged Royce first anyway, didn't he? Clearly Spencer enjoyed Royce being part of his moment and that's what matters.

He's obviously emotional which is understandable. But once he calms down he will rehab and be back . My opinion is you skip surgery and you rehab for 6-7 months then train for 3 months. You take advantage of the rules and push your 2 out of 3 back to early August that's 10 months . You wrestle 1 month out from Worlds and make the team and wrestle Worlds in Vegas and medal. That sets you up for Olympic trials 3 months later in December.

With one lifetime goal achieved the only thing left is Olympic gold. For the little that my opinion is worth, I wonder if it would be better to get surgery now, skip next year if you have to and focus all efforts on being as close to 100% as possible for 2028

I know nothing but this seems to be the most logical answer.

This makes sense. He would lose so much shape getting the surgery. In addition to the psychological recovery.

It makes the most sense to limit the number of matches he needs to make the team. If he can get a medal next year, he’s in the best position to try and fulfill his ultimate goal. Now that the gold medal is in his hip pocket, he’s mentally, spiritually and emotionally in the best spot he’s been in, since setting foot on campus.
For now enjoy the moment, which has become a lifetime memory and achievement.

How many ACL surgeries can a person have and still have the knees work right or have any flexibility or spring in them?

If he gets another surgery, he may lose even more speed and mobility and he may also tear another ACL working out. It is a tough call, but if he were my son, I would be thinking about him being able to walk when he is 40 and asking those questions. He and everyone else knows that a healthy SL is the best in the world. I am glad I do not have to make the decision for him.

I got the feeling he was more relieved than anything with the Gold. He has been under a lot of pressure - mostly because he is so motivated to win.

It seemed like he was sharing a lot of stuff that a guy who is ready to retire would tell people. "No one ever turns me more than once" "I tore my ACL and I am not sure if I will or will not get surgery." "My legs would not move when I got snapped".

Definitely a warrior though. WOW!!!!!! WOW!!!!!! WOW!!!!!!

Erick All from football just tore his ACL for the 4th time in six or seven years. Once at Michigan, then transferred here in 2023 and got about five games before another, then once his rookie year with the Bengals and now his third year he did it again. It happens and in 2026 the recovery is so much faster than before. Maybe that's why they keep happening again also, but at least the rehab time is more predictable.

It looked weird . . . how easy he was turned. It looked like he was even assisting Spencer on the last two.
He knew he was in the jaws of the gator and after the first couple rolls he knew he was done. Fighting it would have just hurt more. Couldn't be happier with Lee beating RBY in that fashion after the way he wrestled DeSanto the last couple times in college.

As Hawk fans, it has been both a great pleasure to watch Lee but gut-wrenching at the same time...all those times we wondered if Lee can't get the quick finish, can he hold on the last few minutes. If that got in our heads, how do you think it was for him? Holy ****...and oh yea SL, you are the one that has to carry the Iowa banner on your back and your body is probably going to fail you and give you 6 months of rehab (again) on top of it.

I'm guessing "The Brands breaks em" crowd would be really surprised to learn just how little SL actually wrestled live in his time at Iowa. For 99.9% of wrestlers out there, this would put an end to any hopes of NCAA or World titles. Other wrestlers adjusted to him; try not to get dominated early and hang on to score points later on. Throw the kitchen sink...that worked a couple of times, especilly when he was tired and straight legged. So SL and Iowa adjusted and tried to manage matches which worked very well but it was like watching Nolan Ryan trying to aim the ball instead of letting it fly.

So I think he made up his mind that he was going to go out there and let it fly. Just imagine how dominant this cat would have been had he "normal" knees and the ability to train hard in the room and just a "normal" gas tank. He just produces so many "Howdafuq" moments. One of my favorites was when the Iranian threw the "Jap-Wizard" (Gilman to Ironside!) on him and found out he scored no points...the look up to the ref and corner was priceless.

Anyways, I think I woke up the neighborhood. Very happy for him.

As a whole, USA wrestled lights out. Should have had 6 titles imo. Anything close wasn't going to go Hidlay's way. I was also very happy for RBY and glad he beat the NK in the semis.

Any speculation on where things go from here for Spencer?

2027 World Championships?
2028 Olympics?
Sports Administration?
Coaching?

I woke up today and had to marvel at SL and what he went thru. It seems like he felt all the criticism that the Hawks and TnT were getting and he was personally carrying it on his shoulders. It almost seems like he did a lot ofwhat he did for the Hawks and TnT. If so, there has to be a tremendous amount of love in his heart for that. The greatest warriors have both tenacity and love. Like those who serve our country because they love it and want to protect it. I sense there is/was a lot of that with SL. He made me a proud American again to day.

Amazing post, thank you Chief! All Hawk/ Brands haters simply won't look at the situation objectively nor will they ever fully understand the pressure and the pain he has gone through and TNT have been right there with him, step for step.
You're spot on with the pitching metaphor too, but also his pitch (match) count. We got a brief period of time when he was mostly healthy, but I'll argue we never got to and likely will never see him at his peak. And that's just sad because at his most dominate he's the best wrestler in the world and one of the best of all time.
Also, he just has the worst luck too. 2019 was probably his healthiest year, whooped up on the field and qualified for the Team Trials, but then it all gets pushed due to covid - and of course he's injured and can't compete. And that's not covering the heartbreaking losses in extreme fashion.

You can tell his teammates love him and his competitors repect him, but it's straight up pathetic as hell that we still have all these so-called USA wrestling fans taking cracks at him, even after the win yesterday.

But now they have to live with it: SPENCER LEE WORLD CHAMPION!!!

It's sports people will always take shots regardless. You gotta remember he's a PA kid that Penn st wanted so those who like Penn st and like trolling love taking shots at Spencer. In the past he definitely let those things get to him but as he matured those things bother him less and less . As you mature you realize people are always gonna be jealous and say hateful things so you ignore it and move on

I agree, but it doesn't make it any less sad and pathetic. Especially at the international/ world stage where these wrestlers are representing us.

There's a difference between competitive rivalry jabs during competition and just being a ****** person. There's a lot of truly ****** people out there.

Spencer blew a knee before he ever got to Iowa. Two of the times he blew his knees was at the tourneys. You have to have an irrational hatred of the Brands to believe they had anything to do with any of the ACLs lost. Their dealings with Spencer have been exemplary.

so the pst crowd was pulling for rby?
I think most were pulling for Spencer simply because he was repping the USA,but there were definitely some loud PSU fans cheering for RBY.

Then there's morans like Paddy Minnows who twist it and give all credit to the state of Pennsylvania for his talents while ignoring that he's spent 8 years in the state of Iowa.

Yesterday I broke my rule and commented on a Facebook post. I think the guy I commented back to was out of NY and was rooting for RBY and wasn't happy Spencer won. Anyway, I commented back something with Spencer Lee!! USA!! And didn't understand how an American regardless of who their favorite college team is could root for the representative of team Mexico over team USA.
The guy commented back and call me a dummy and a moron (which I knew he was the moran when he couldn't even spell it right lol)
The kicker to it was the guy private messaged me and called me a racist. I'm an American and root for every guy and gal who represents the USA, regardless of their college. There are definitely some odd and ****** people out there.
