Big fan of your postings, but man was this misleading. As someone who hadn’t watched the match yet, after reading this, I almost didn’t. I get that you were mainly referencing the last 30 secs, but I expected domination throughout…

Imagine my surprise to see a 4-4 barnburner. But, hey, ANY win over Sadulaev should be heavily celebrated!
You've gotta have rocks in your head to have expected domination throughout.

The Bassett debacle will be Brands & Co. ultimate downfall. Congrads to that young man, just amazing.

Yup but Brands wont realize it was until years from now. He was perfect for Iowa and vice versa. Looking back a squabble over like 1 month of practice time really was worth all of this?

Both the parents and Brands should equally feel ashamed that cooler heads couldn't prevail. I truly believe when older Bo will look back on this with a little bit of regret and animosity. Not that he doesnt love his Dad but just a tad poorly guided of the bigger picture for instant justification. Being the rockstar at Iowa at the level he could be is just priceless and nothing VT could even come close to matching in so many areas.

Absolutely. Love to watch him go and I will root for him anywhere he goes. He's a good kid. Keep working hard and become your own man instead of the wrestling equivalent of the Jackson Five. IMO Dad was looking out for himself and the 2 younger brother more than just making it about Bo and his decision only.

I stand by my comment in a few years Bo will think on his own behalf and realize god didn't guide him to VT, his dads greed did.

I doubt it. World champion > rock star at Iowa or anywhere else for that matter. When you're winning worlds before you've wrestled in college, not to mention the likely additional future world/Olympic medals, I don't think they'll be much regret over which college he attended. Short of him going undefeated ala Cael, his college career is looking like it'll be a footnote vs a headline in the grand scheme of things.

Bo will never finish his Career at VT, as you're correct. He is/was just a puppet on his dads String. Great feel good get for VT, but they will hate the ending of the story.

He is a world champion. What makes you think he’d be any better than that at Iowa?

He’s also already the most popular athlete in the sport. Didn’t need Iowa’s fan base to get him there. VT will likely beat Iowa this year at nationals, and that will only make them a more attractive place to be. The trajectories of the two programs couldn’t be any more different.

So break rules and get fired got it 🤣. Here come the 🤡s

So the rule that's not a rule anymore that Oklahoma State will never retroactively be punished for or anyone lmao. I believe Brands needed better connections with the NCAA to know that was in the works and shortly going bye bye- but Brands and building relationships is a whole different argument.

Back to my point. One month of practice time caused all parties to burn down the plan? Couldn't overcome that and find any common ground? Its pretty petty looking back big picture wise, do you agree?

Not only was down, but was getting dominated in the hand fight the whole match. Shocking turnaround. Snyder needs to be in the goat conversation.
The challenge *breather* worked perfectly for him. Savvy vet who didn't panic. I didn't think he had a shot in that one until the breather. Congrats to him

I guess not getting a trophy and getting fired is better.

He should have never even asked Beth. How would she know RTC practice stipulations. If it did come to fruition he could have pleaded ignorant to the rule. Looking back that would have 100% worked out to this day.

Heck Kirk Ferentz has pleaded ignorant a few times and received probation. Even ISU wrestling got a nothing burger on their recent stuff. A program just moves on. Stop treating it like its was a death penalty type infraction.

Its the cost of doing business. But again Corby- please let me know when Oklahoma State is going to get their punishment for breaking that rule and how severe would it even be?

NCAA has way too many things to worry about to even notice NCAA Wrestling.

US might win this thing. Spencer, Haines, and Hidlay all have good medal opportunities and Green is in the weakest bracket so hopefully can get some points and make a run. The guys today all still alive tomorrow morning. The U23 team disappointment getting quickly erased this week.

If it means not breaking rules and getting the program on probation it absolutely is. Also the AD is in a tough spot to fire someone for not cheating, that would actually kill the whole athletics department.

He likely will be gone even he gets a trophy because Iowa standards aren’t that of ISU who places 4th and has to beg the NCAA to bring back 4th place trophies. Truly second rate program stuff.
Really? When does that happen? Brands has gotten that 4th place trophy 6 times in his 20 years at Iowa. Sprinkle in a 5th and an 8th. The last 3 years have average placement of 4.33. If getting 4th isn’t good enough for Iowa standards, why is he still the coach? Seems like that is the exact Iowa standard currently.

Just because it's not gonna be a rule much longer that doesn't mean anything . If your boss told you that you couldn't do something because it was against the rules and you did it anyway and broke a rule your probably fired. That's what happens in the real world .

Not sure that I understand the “Tom is a victim to the Iowa compliance department” narrative. From my understanding, it wasn’t necessarily the Iowa Compliance Dept ruling that caused Bo to flee. It was Tom losing his s*** on Bo’s mom. Tom is the CEO of the program and should be able to navigate and peacefully handle disagreements when they arise. I don’t think Tom was the victim.

1. Brands demise will be the program is flat and going backwards at the end of his contract as well as considering his age. Why in the world would an AD fire a coach for not cheating, that would never be a reason and the would find something else to label it as. I assume you havent managed with an HR department.

2. Brands could have pleaded ignorance and a grey area. Turns out even if he would have been caught and reprimanded in that one month of doing this- which wouldnt have happend that fast- they could have appealed and the rule literally would have fallen off during that time. Or even worse case say the rule never changed to this day. Could have just done the current plan of action, find a local judge to rule in Iowa's favor and Bo is eligible and the courts would no boubt rule in favor of the athlete because you cant tell a kid he cant make a living playing sports nowadays. Its to the point where its labor laws over old norms.

"Sprinkling in an 8th" is of course ridiculous given it was his first year and half his lineup was stopped from wrestling. The general point stands though. I think the times have moved beyond the Brands. It's different now, and I don't know that they are equipped for this current battlefield.

Brands had a great run, ran into an unforeseen monster w/ Cael going to Penn State, and then the ground dramatically shifted under him/them in a way they don't appear to have been able to adapt to.

Didn't the telling them now after consulting with compliance trigger that future argument? But I agree even after the compliance ruling how could both parties not salvage and compromise on what the Bo wanted.

I don't thing for a fact but my guess is the Dad & Mom probably wanted that and or more money and then it went from Bo needing whatever to up the anti for Melvin & Keegan now that the dad's foot was in the door. From other poster it sounds like dad tried to renege on Bo's deal once secured to secure another deal for all kids. So maybe it wasn't just the rule and a combo of both? I would love to sit down and hear Bob tell the complete story over a beer but he can in no way spill any beans. We all get why.

I don't blame Brands for being upset but should have calmed down, took a walk and sat on it before calling and jumping into a heat of the moment type call. Fair or not fair Brands didn't have the luxury of being Cael and saying thanks but no thanks, best of luck- the machine will roll just fine without this BS in my life.

I will always love Brands for what he has done and meant to the program as an athlete and coach. But his faults have been naive, unable to control emotions and stubborn. That's why Bowlsby picked Zalesky over him. Just was the safer of the two and deemed less of a loose cannon.

Well said. It takes a perfect storm. OK St is building that and will be interesting if an when. Brands two championship runs took two perfect storm to hold off Cael. The VT recruits merging with Zalesky leftovers/recruits. The next riding the Spencer Lee wave of excitements. Kids saw how close Iowa was with Spencer leading the charge and they came to Iowa City. Stritmatter was pretty huge in that lifeline to Brands.

I think most of saw a 3rd perfect storm brewing with Bo leading the way and creating that urgency, excitement one last time for coach. But we lost out and its sad to say we are just going through his contract and drifting out to sea with no oars. Cant feel any pulse now.

I believe Bo might have been the engine to get Tom another slight extension to at least match out a few years to mirror Bo's eligibility. But here we are. No Bo and there wont be a contract extension offered. Tom has this year and maybe next. He will never coach the last season unless he retires and Beth lets him run that out. And if your going to do that then you don't turn down a JB based on Tom's feelings and timing. Esp with the buydowns decreasing.

It may have been unforeseen for Carl to jump to PSU but it was definitely not unforeseen as to how successful he would be when he did.

The decade of outdated recruiting and training methods whilst Carl was doing his thing is what has us here.

I'm not going to write his story, but I hope you are wrong. Distribution of talent is in short supply and with his brother joining him soon, VT could rise to prominence while he's there. Its good for wrestling as a whole if he stays. I'm sure it won't be easy with the bags of cash/promises that will be coming his way with him being a world champion now.
