A few years back, the SAT scores of students matriculating in the Catholic schools (elementary to 8th grade) in my town (Morris County suburban town) were compared to the students attending the public schools. The Catholic student SAT scores were well below those of the public school student scores. A fairly large percentage of the parents immediately pulled their children out of the Catholic schools and enrolled into the public schools. Most suburban Catholic schools cannot compete with the funding provided to the public school students by the State and local governments.

Has no effect on Rutgers recruiting ... never did. One less pipeline that never was.
The sadness has nothing to do with losing a pipeline. It has to do with that community losing a resource. Vouchers would save a whole lot of schools that serves communities like this.

In most cases, the value of Catholic schools is relative to the towns and cities in which they are located. For a Jersey City student, St. Anthony provided a fine value (with basketball not even being taken into account) because of the smaller, more personalized atmosphere and dedicated staff. Most of the public schools in JC are terrible (with the very notable exception of McNair Academic).

But in towns with even good (let along great) public schools? I have no idea where the value comes from. The religious instruction does make a difference (much more so than at a Catholic college), but aside from that, it just doesn't make sense. Someone above asked why Don Bosco when there is Ridgewood H.S - I couldn't possibly explain.

I should say that I am a grad of a Catholic high school who could've very well attended a public high school that was superior, and my parents actually preferred that I would've gone the public route. Ironically, my mom's professional presence in the public school was one deterrent to me! But the majority of my friends from my Catholic elementary school were continuing on there, so I chose the Catholic school. In retrospect, it was a complete waste of money, given what I could've had in the public school.

Well Marist (class of 80') is located in Bayonne and St. Anthony's is in JC. One (St. Ant's) is a catholic school and Marist is a Jesuit school. Marist is independent and not affiliated to the Arch Diocese. They are part of the Marist Champagnet (sp?) jesuits. Marist has a shortfall of 1.5M and appears that after 62 years will be closing. Will need a miracle to stay open.

The problem with catholic schools is that the properties are worth millions and if another school dies, they basically sell the property and are satisfied to pad their bank accounts.
I thought the Marist Brothers are something completely different than the Jesuits?

I know SPP is Jesuit (says the only one in NJ here) but did not know of the connection with the Society of Jesus and Marist High School.

That's a real shame, but it seems to be the fate of many Catholic schools nowadays.

On Catholic school education, it varies based on the school. The school we had the boys in down in Charlottesville, CCS, was one of the best schools I've ever encountered. We moved them into a Catholic school up here when we came back for Tyler, but after a couple of years realized that it just wasn't that good a school, so moved them into the public schools here in Wayne.

Yes, Marist brothers are Jesuits. Didn't know that SPP was also Jesuit considering I grew up in JC! I know Hudson Catholic, SPP, St. Mary's (Not sure they are still open, don't think so), St. Ant's are affiliated with the Diocese of Newark.

yeah, no they aren't.

There is ONE Jesuit school in NJ. And it ain't Marist.

A proper Jesuit wouldn't send his pet rock to be educated at Marist.

Marist Brothers are...wait you guessed it...MARIST BROTHERS. That is a distinct religious congregation.

If I want a fact checker, i'll let you know.

"Marist High School is a private Roman Catholic co-educational college preparatory secondary school. It is owned and operated by the Marist Brothers of the Schools, an international religious congregation of educators with schools in over seventy countries"

https://www.marist.org/

Catholic high schools are, by and large, struggling unless. Exceptions appear to b

It's sad, but times change. St. Joe's in Metuchen is struggling with enrollment. When my son started there 7 years ago, it was one of their largest classes. The freshman class now is less than 75% of the size of his class. (My youngest son is a freshman.)

You can't ignore the generational shift in the parents. The parents from his class were by and large Baby Boomers. They (we) were brought up with a different perspective on the role of religion.

Also, for a number of reasons, the middle class (and the upper middle class) is shrinking. Schools in more upper class areas are doing great. Most people just don't have $14,000 or $15,000 a year (tuition is in that ballpark, I think) for high school in Middlesex County.

What is the class size? Back when I went there many moons ago, we had about 200 per class.

I stand corrected as I was confused with St. Peters College which I also attended. By the way, Keep your snide remarks to yourself! No need to disparage Marist. I and many others received a very valuable education from the Marist Brothers and lay teachers.

Here is a little history on Marist and who founded the Marist Brothers:
Saint Marcellin Joseph Benedict Champagnat (20 May 1789 – 6 June 1840) was born in Le Rosey, village of Marlhes, near St. Etienne (Loire), France. He was the founder of the Marist Brothers, a religious congregation of brothers in the Roman Catholic Church devoted to Mary and dedicated to education. His feast day is 6 June, his death anniversary.

St Marcellin was ordained as a priest on the 22nd of July 1816, and was part of a group led by Jean-Claude Colin, who founded the Society of Mary, a separate religious congregation to the Marist Brothers teaching order Marcellin founded later. Marcellin was born in the year of the storming of the Bastille, the start of the French Revolution. The religious, political, economic and social unrest of the times he lived influenced his priorities and life path. Marcellin was well known for being a great child in school. He was the son of a woman named Kalyna and his Aunty was named Krishelle. He married a maiden named Bronte and they had a son named Samuel Burton Champagnat.

When In was commuting from Camden County to Jersey City, there used to be at least 5-7 kids taking the same trains to St Anthony everyday.

I always get the Marist and the Martinist thing confused.

But the other thing....Crusader/Maruader, Donne Society/Deus Vult is there really a difference? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
