How so. KU was overall 1 and the difference between Chicago and Louisville really wasn't that large so they could have been sent to either one.

Because if they wanted to keep all ones as close to home as possible, Kansas should have gone Midwest and UVA south.

You're right that Chicago and Louisville are equidistant from KU, but hey aren't from UVA. So it isn't about keeping teams close to home...it's about priveleging the order of the ones. If it was geography based like they claim it is,

UNC=east
KU=Midwest
UVA=south
Oregon=west

That's the geography logic.

Exactly.

And this is why the seeding process is so maddening. There is never any consistent logic. They might as well draw teams out a hat by seed. Geography obviously does not take priority like they claim it does.

You can't look at where Cal is placed and say that. If they were the 3rd or 4th ranked 4 seed, then Louisville was 100% a possibility.

The order was KU, UNC, Virginia, Oregon

KU went South
UNC went to the closest region left meaning East
UVA went to the next closest region meaning Midwest
which left Oregon W
