I was in 118 for many years. My family didn't feeling like paying up to stay there, and now we are in 204. We hate it. Totally different experience. In 118 you are absolutely a part of the game. In 204 it is dark, dreary, and just not the same. We regret not paying up, and will be moving back down below somewhere next year. I need to be on the floor!

Interesting that you say that. I was thinking recently about Chaney and his habit of "reversing" the floor. He's the only opposing coach that comes to mind that's ever done that at the RAC. Coaches always want their team shooting in front of them in the second half... except Chaney. He didn't want his players shooting into the frenzy of the Rutgers student section in the second half, so Temple always shot with the section 118 backdrop after halftime.
I didn't know that coaches even had that option

According to the NCAA Men's Basketball 2014-15 Rulebook,

Section 1 Article 2: A team’s own basket is the one into which its players try to throw or tap the ball. Each team shall warm up and shoot during the first half at the basket farthest from its bench.

That means that the side you are on, depends on where your bench is. The side closer to your bench is your Defensive side for the first half of the game.

The bench is usually chosen by whether you are the home or away team.

Section 21 Article 1 : The home team’s game administration shall designate each team’s bench.

Back when Chaney was coaching, the visiting team coach had the option of choosing which basket to shoot at in each half. The rule changed around the time we left the A10 for the Big East. Pete Carrill also used to take the far basket in the second half

I think you mean John Carroll in the last sentence.

Where's @BKIn118 ? It certainly looks nicer, but obviously we'll miss those fans when we are better. I love our new seats in 102, row 2 (2nd year), but the leg room sucks. Whoever designed these seats designed them for people under 5'8", lol. Definitely had more legroom in 206, but wouldn't trade - took me 20 years to finally convince my friends to make the move...

I definitely caused Roby to miss 2 free throws. He looked right at me before he missed the first time.

Roby missed another (front end of a one and one) FT with about a minute to go in the first half. Fortunately there was a referee review right before that so I was able to recruit a 10 year old and his dad and we did that “Duke thing” where our arms were up to the left and when he was ready to shoot we quickly moved our arms to the right and of course Roby missed that one too. Hey, ya never know it could have been the difference in a one or 2 point game!

Elliott

I’m also in 102, but Row E....

This is my second season there. The seats aren’t comfortable by any definition for someone 6’2”...but we have great supportive fans in our immediate vicinity.

We were a family in 118 for decades, but nothing stops the march of progress! Ultimately it turned out ok for us

Many of the most loyal from 118 saw that coming. Silly to mess with the footprint for a few bucks. SMH.

A lot of 118 now isn’t even paid for - they are freebie tickets our department is giving away to friends .

Wish I could sit down with our department and facilities people and coach them up on how to organize this place .
Oh wait, don’t we have some sort of fan committee like that? Does that still exist?

Both ends of the court look terrible on TV too. Section 118 is like an empty dark area, and the student section is so far back it looks empty on that side also. Need some readjustments for seating, especially if we start getting bigger crowds.

The student section is so far back. Being close to the basket was the best part about having student tickets when I was there. Had to show up early for them.

I know the cheerleaders take up most of that space, but I feel like it's really a buffer for the floor seating fans to have space between the students.

Agree about the Student Section is still too far back. That needs to be reworked and brought back to where it used to be.

But I disagree about the “old” Section 118. Always felt that looked awful in person and even worse on TV. Rinky dink borderline grammar school set up IMO.

I would let the new way play out and if we could, down the road maybe, make it mirror the Student Section seats at the other end once the new thing is finished next door and we clear out the offices above.

Why can’t the cheerleaders be right on the baseline like EVERY OTHER CHEER TEAM IN AMERICA?!
Because they put those cushy seats and scorer's table type seats on the baseline in front of the student section and for some reason we absolutely must have our "World Champion" 200 person dance team members AND cheerleaders at every game. I have no clue what the deal is with those scorer's table type seats. It's usually some random, disinterested people sitting there or no one at all. At one time, I think after the UMass/Lawrence protest game they put up barriers between the students and the court which also was used to avoid any court storming.

Wasn't that long ago that the band was directly behind the basket but then I think there was some Big East rule about the band being there right next to the opposing team or something and had to be moved to this side. Don't think that rule exist in the Big Ten because I see bands directly behind the basket everywhere. So basically with the band standing on the bleachers including Souzaphone guys in the back that whole 108 section is pretty unusable. And we still don't come close to filling up the student section most of the time. Over break, forget it.

The whole RAC needs to be renovated. It’s gonna be a while before it’s done.

So, on one of the BTN shows last night/ this morning the announcers spoke about what a tough place the RAC is to play and how loud it gets!! The Indiana coach also mentioned it. This is after a game that wasn't even sold out. Haven't heard that much since the Waters era, but it's music to my ears. Some "renovations" would be fine, but the parties that would be happiest if there were major changes to the RAC would be our opponents. Pack the RAC!

Pack the RAC!
That is point. Fill the building and it will be loud no matter who is sitting where - even if it never will be the same as in the pre-piped-in-music/Simba-cam/smartphone era as far as fan engagement/craziness is concerned. And with the type of name brand programs we play against now (Michigan! Ohio State! Indiana! Michigan State!) there is no reason why with a decent team we shouldn't draw crowds that are into it and make for a hostile environment. The concourses stink, can't get to concessions, and not enough bathrooms, but as far as the basketball viewing experience, the RAC can still rock much better than much bigger, fuller arenas.

I agree it sucks and looks terrible.

That’s what was so great as a student sitting behind the team bench in the late 80’s.
You felt like you were right there to help make a difference.

Someone should ask the athletic department why it was moved back.

@BKIn118 - have any idea?

I believe the original reason for the push back was to comply with a change in emergency evacuation regulations...but don’t quote me on that

That makes sense

But I don’t know how places like Cameron and other facilities you see on TV comply as well

It’s like moving the Birthplace of College Football for a generic ribbon sign and now never being able to see it. Money is so not worth it.

The truly unique stuff we have like the RAC and the Birthplace we mess with and ruin it. No vision or no idea what’s important for the fans. Be more concerned about winning and the money will roll in rather than $illy progress. Hire proven Winners like Pike and good things happen.

We can still have the permanent Birthplace sign at the South end and put an electronic version in the rotation on the three ribbon boards. Now you have it FOUR places instead of just one that as you say sometimes gets covered.

I suggested this to the powers that be as soon as it happened but it still hasn’t been utilized.
