We all know and expect that at least some teams will cancel their seasons over the course of the year. Wanted a thread to keep track of them.

At this point I know of one school having cancelled, Al Raby. Keep us informed of whenever this unfortunately happens again.

Famous for the weak punt at Hanson that turned into a near perfect punt with the uneven field & wind.Made the semifinals that year & it happened in that game

Obviously, playing 8-man ball is better than no football.
That said, if Raby (enrollment 220) played 8-man ball (biggest school playing has 295 enrollment), who exactly would they play?
Here are the cities with schools in the "northern" divisions of 8-man ball in Illinois:
South Beloit, Rockford, Hebron, Ashland, Kirkland, Amboy, Polo, Orangeville, Milledgeville, Hanover, and Peoria (yes, Peoria is in the "northern" division ... go figure.)
So, clearly, Roby can't go it alone.
In the Chicago Public League, of the 25 schools that are not part of the IHSA playoff system, 21 of the 25 have enrollments of more than 295. 14 of the 25 have enrollments of more than 500.
Raby, by the way, knew they were not playing football in 2023.
This is not them starting practice and realizing they don't enough enough players.
They weren't part of the IHSA football schedule for 2023, so it not playing does not leave nine teams short a game, which is good.

I know it's not trustworthy mostly but MaxPreps said they had 69 kids on the football roster last year

They had 7 games scheduled.Orr on Sept 2nd. but I believe Orr picked up Immaculate Conception then.Other teams now open due to the Raby Canceling football are Phoenix Military 9-9,Payton 9-14,Collins 9-22,Crane 9-29,ITW Speer 10-7 & North Lawndale 10-12

I think Raby was ranked in the Sun Times top 25 a few years ago too when they had a high profile D1 player who’s name escapes me. Sad to hear

If the CPS wanted to start 8 man football they would not need to be a part of the "8 Man Football State" they could play for their own city title which would probably mean more to those kids.

I personally wish they would look into it. I feel it would give more kids a chance to experience the game.

I've had ppl not on here talk to me about why don't Raby or others with low numbers do co-op? Sad thing is is that in many cases rival gangs from those schools present a problem & I'll just leave that there :(.Westinghouse is nearby i think but too late to co op

CPS had 8-man as late as 2006. Payton played 8-man in '06 before moving back to 11-man the following year in 2007 and making the inter-city title game. The rest is history (not particularly impressive history, but not bad for a CPS school).

Seeing numerous references on Twitter to Sparta not having a team, and their opponents seeking replacement games.

Apologies, as I am sure this has been mentioned before.....What is the total number of teams participating in 11-man football?

Not sure what the schools in the Black Diamond will look to do with it being a closed conference, but if the teams scheduled to play Sparta and Vienna-Goreville are looking to reschedule, it seems there would be some competitive matchups available that you don't get to see very often in Southern Illinois. Travel also wouldn't be that big of an issue for most of the games.

Week 1: Fairfield (418.5) v. Freeburg (663.5) (103 miles)
Week 2: Sesser-Valier (279) v. Pinckneyville (423.5) (17 Miles)
Week 3: Carmi White County (368) v. Macon Meridian (290.5) (150 Miles)
Week 4: Christopher Zeigler Royalton (382.5) v. Chester (330) (52 Miles)
Week 5: Albion Edwards County (238.5) v. Red Bud (371.5) (135 Miles)
Week 6: Eldorado (322) v. Trenton Wesclin (385.5) (103 Miles)
Week 7: Johnston City (328.5) v. Carlyle (300) (79 Miles)
Week 8: Flora (368) v. Dupo (258) (103 Miles)
Week 9: McLeansboro Hamilton County (336.5) v. West Frankfort (436.5) (32 Miles)

I see at least some evidence suggesting that Eldorado and Wesclin have scheduled each other.

Raby fell off because when the HC left they hired the incompetent Asst Coach because he was in the building. They are like most CPS schools, the AD or principal hires their buddy regardless if they are capable of doing the job. The only ones who suffer in end are the kids.
