Sean Miller's bizarre statement

Said after the Colorado crowd stormed the court, "What's gonna happen is an Arizona player is gonna punch a fan............out of self defense............"

I don't really even know what to think about that, but it just strikes me as a really bizarre thing for a coach to say to reporters.

It would have been even more bizarre if he said the Arizona head coach is gonna punch a fan.:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

He's speaking the truth. Im somewhat surprised a player hasn't dropped an opposing student for screwing with them. You remember when one of the Harrison kids had that opposing student get into a fight stance with him?

Miller is just speaking his mind....and probably a bit agitated.

I can't believe it hasn't happened already. Something needs to be done about court storming. Apparently a fine isn't enough to sway anybody from putting a stop to it. It's just a matter of time before somebody from the losing team either gets seriously injured or takes a swing at one of the moronic revelers that happen to get in their face.

Colorado fans can be pretty nasty FYI. Maybe there was an incident towards a player possibly

It is very easy to stop the crowds from storming the courts.
Every court should be accessible through the locker rooms only. .There should be barriers between the players, coaches, officials in the courts, and the crowds in the stands.
As much money as NCAA collects for a lousy job it does, they should provide 50% of the funds necessary to accomplish this. The other 50% from colleges who want to protect their athletes.

I don't find it bizarre in the least, while maybe he should have put it a different way ,fans storming the court creates a dangerous situation and needs to be stopped.
We as UK Fans of all people know this, happens to us at least once a year. After the Dec 2012 IU debacle I agree with him.Players and Coaches are going to be injured, just a matter of time, and a over-zealous fan will start a fight with an opposing player too.
NCAA needs to make the penalty for it so high that fans will not do this

Not 100% sure on this, but I believe in the past players have been in fights with fans during court storming melees and if I'm not mistaken the player was suspended while nothing happened to the fan

I think he's trying to bring more attention to one of college basketball's dumbest traditions.

Numbnut fans are becoming more emboldened because no one is stopping them. All it takes is one fan to shove a player, and the player would have every right to defend himself and cold-cock the a-hole.

It's a real concern because each of the fans who rushes the court represents an unknown variable. That and the fact that most of those fans don't even have their frontal lobes fully-developed, therefore minimizing their ability to make sound decision. It's a recipe for disaster, and something big will happen due to the arbitrary nature of these game endings and how home teams handle them.

Another suggestion would be to vacate the game from the winners that storm the court if its shown the administration did not take preventive measures.

I realize it would take some refining of the rule, like have it announced by PA before game ends.etc.

I know this sounds a little harsh, but its been proven the slap on the wrist doesn't deter it. Its going to take a serious injury to someone before there is anything done.

When you have this many people out of control emotionally and no one in charge it can get bad, even though no harm was intended.

What's bizarre about it? He's absolutely right. It's gonna take something crazy happening for it to stop.

These things always take a huge incident to suddenly stop. Usually, the risks are obvious, but people keep allowing these things because they don't want to deal with the "how to" element.

If a player was seriously injured by some fans (or the reverse of that being true), there would be some families who would file lawsuits due to lack of control on the part of the home teams (or potentially the road team). If my son was punched by a fan and had to miss game time due to an altercation, I'd consider suing the school responsible for the lack of security and/or the public scrutiny that would accompany such an altercation. The players are being flooded upon by dozens of emotional, half-drunk fans who are running full speed toward them. What if a player gets trampled? What if a player is kneed in the nuts or punched in the face, or stomped on by different students?

The risks outweigh the reward on an exponential level. Why it's still being allowed is beyond me. It's stupid, and the level of degenerate fans in our society don't provide the type of assurance that the opposing players will be able to safely walk off the court without incident.

Fine the home team $5,000 for every fan who rushes the court. 100 fans = $500,000. 200 fans = $1 million.

It will stop overnight.

a guy ran on the court Saturday after the buzzer beater and snatched the ball out of Hawkins' hands

Yep, and nothing would have prevented Hawkins from getting punched in the face by the unknown variable, or Hawkins defending himself, or the fan subsequently suing Hawkins and UK (not saying they'd win), or Hawkins being suspended by the SEC for a few critical games down the stretch for retaliating.

What happens when a couple of moronic fans decide to start an altercation with a player who's projected in the lottery, starting a fight, that leads to an opportunistic lawsuit against the player?

This shite needs to stop. We're in the 21st Century. If your team's fans can't celebrate from their damn seats, they don't deserve to come to a public sports outing in the first place.

Maybe we need a return to the days when basketball was played in a cage.

most of us have long agreed that court storming is dangerous. Is the SEC the only conference that fines for it? Not that it always deters them - Auburn stormed, IIRC
Here's a sad thing - it won't matter as much to the court storming fans if someone on the opposing team gets hurt (I know, harsh, but sadly true). And they certainly won't care if there is an altercation, because it's always the basketball player's fault But what if they hurt one of their own?

Zona got one of the most inexplicable call overturns very late in the game. They had the ball and York did a crossover and it clearly went off CU, the ref was right there and called it Zona's ball. They went to the monitor and somehow saw it the other way.

I honestly don't have a problem with storming the court as long as they do it in a way no one(Players, fans) get hurt. If your team is 1-15 and you beat a top 10 team on your court per say, why not? I know the phrase, "ACT LIKE YOU BEEN THERE BEFORE" but alot of these teams and fans haven't. The Blueblood Teams don't do it because we've been there. I see and understand both sides of the discussion but this is just my opinion. The bottom line is it's about SAFETY I get it but it's also about Celebration if it's done the Smart and Right Way...

I agree with you 100%. Court storming could result in injury, or worse, to players on either team and also to fans on fans. There have been incidences in other sporting events and rock concerts of fans trampling each other and some being suffocated and killed when there has been no control over crowds rushing on to playing surface of spectators rushing for concert seats (just making a comparison to make a point). I know that is extreme but it is a possibility in these situations. I really dislike seeing rushing the court being allowed (and the Miller situation at IU always comes to mind) and feel it has totally lost any meaning, if it really ever had one. Most of the people rushing the floor aren't even that excited to the point of celebration like some suggest. They're just doing it to be a part of a dumb and dangerous tradition.

Permitting storming is irrational. If the opposing players went into the stands, they would be arrested. But fans can storm the court, block the exits, bump and berate the Losers, and it's called College basketball celebration.

Try that in a soccer game in Brazil. Make certain you bring Body Bags.

The reason it isn't being stopped is because these schools admins don't want to stop it. They want to be shown on sportscenter. The message is, buy a ticket and you can do this too.

What's so hard to understand what Sean said? Players need to defend themselves and not be pushed around. Players always have to show self control and the fans do not. It's ridiculous!

Yea, Arizona is/was ranked 9th! I could see when an un ranked school knocks off number one. But court storming is happening when an unranked knocks off #15.

It's really out of hand.

If i weren't for lawyers and lawsuits you could just let a bunch of them get hurt, then the fun would soon leave it, when I was growing up if you got hurt you just had to work hurt or get that tail busted and so it made you a lot more careful about what you did. All the TV coverage and talk shows also I believe play into it and the fans see it and makes them want to do it, when we attended the Auburn game and they rushed the floor it sorta started slow with a few then most anted to get in on the act I just turned sideways and let them flow on to the floor, a funny thing one lady stopped and hugged my neck and apologized "but she said we never beat Kentucky" and she just took off running and hollering.

They don't truly want to stop it. It's part of the "pageantry" of college sport, in their opinion. It's stupid. People these days just do too many stupid thing. The problem is, when this tradition started, there were far less people, and far better behaved people. Now, we get stuff like this...

..this isn't part of anything. This is an idiot douche acting like he's invincible and has every right to harass anyone he wants. He was EXTREMELY lucky he didn't get his jaw broken. This isn't what you should want representing your sport. But the NCAA is stuck in the past, protecting the pageantry of an "amateur" game that doesn't really exist any more.

The solution should be if you rush the court, you forfeit the game. It'd stop reaaaaaaaaal fast after that first vacated victory.

SC is saying this has to get under control. I guess that only applies to storming after other schools that get upset not named UK. Never saw them say anything after storms against us.
