I'm stuck at work this weekend so I can take a long break next weekend and was doing my usual college football internet browsing ... then came across this SDS writer's perception of JoMo at media days:

"Joe Moorhead spent most of his time walking back brash comments he made at last year’s Media Days. Most gave him a thumbs up for his admitting he put his team in a tough spot by talking about championship rings and Heisman Trophy awards.
I had a different view. Moorhead’s backtracking makes me think that he’s not very confident in his team. Before SEC Media Days, I thought Mississippi State could be the surprise team in the conference. Now I’m second guessing that. Moorhead is a really good offensive coach, which is exactly what a program like State needs. However, I don’t think we’ll see his best on display this season."

I have to disagree. I'd hope that Moorhead has learned from his mistakes, the offense is on year 2 with his system, and Tommy coming in to push things forward will mean more success than what we saw last year.

What choice does Joe have?
I know this, if I'd talked that type of pre-season noise and ended up with 4 conference losses and bowl game loss to Iowa I'd slow play my hand for sure, no matter what my true expectations.

I don't disagree with that. I just don't believe that he's not confident heading into the season.

I don’t know that I would have walked back anything though. I want a coach to be confident and have high expectations and be unapologetic about it. My hope is that he still does and is being more practical about how he articulates it.

He probably thought that surely a wide open SEC receiver could catch a pass that wouldn’t cost him two games and that SEC Refs really didn’t cheat for BAMA.

This is why people think you should never admit you are wrong. B/c some 17stick is going to turn it into a negative. Joe was speaking in a way that isn’t typical of SEC head coaches in that he wasn’t being overly optimistic. So this guy has a “hot take” which just means different from the norm. La-tee-dah.

Joe is unique and I like that about him.

Absolutely. I like confidence, who doesn't, I just thought his statements were writing checks that his offensive plan with that personnel couldn't cash

At the beginning of the season last year I gave Moorhead the benefit of the doubt, mainly because he had a roster full of future first round draft picks laid in his lap. He lost 5 games. This year, with less talent, some people seem to think he'll do better. I won't believe it until I see it. Last year I was surprised to lose 4 SEC games; this year I'll be surprised if we don't lose 4 SEC games. He has a new quarterback who is in his final year of eligibility who was never a starter and has never played a down in the SEC and yet everybody is looking at him as "the answer" just like they did last year when we were getting an "offensive genius." I hope they're both quick learners. Flame away.

I would argue that the only evidence of a lack of confidence exhibited by Moorhead is K Thompson.

Thanks for finding this because I was about to ask. I remembered him saying all that stuff right after he was hired...what coach doesn’t throw out lofty goals right after he’s hired? I remember Mullen throwing our championships talk right after he came.

Yes, I personally took all of that as coach speak

from a newly hired coach.

But he definitely did a pivot at SEC Media Days.

Sort of threw some of our players under the bus. IMO.

Just remember this: SDS is a haven of hack idiots.

This will let you know just how seriously to take anything you read from that site.

In addition, every sportswriter out there is looking for a reason to put us back down at the bottom of the SEC again.

Coach Speak. Board speak. None of it matters. No coach can long continue unless he wins the game. Wins on the field should be the only measureable that matters.

I saw where he said the talk of championships should have been kept in house. But I'm not sure what you're referring to.

Oh he was suttle about what he had to say.

Maybe I'm Stretching it here. but it left with a bad taste in my mouth.

I'll try to be a good dog, till it's evident to all, hope he rights the ship.

Been a awhile that we looked so clueless against a D with a pulse.

Eh...I took the same thing from Moorehead’s backtracking. I think he’s worried about setting expectations for this season. I think last year hurt his confidence. Might not be a bad thing going forward though.

I'd say it's because the feeling is Stevens knows the offensive scheme, is thought to be a better passer, and nearly as good a runner as Fitz was. But most importantly, the thought is Stevens will be able to make the numerous reads, both pre-snap & post, including the pass tags much more quickly & instinctively than Fitz was able to with the little time Fitz had to learn it.

IMO, though Fitz's inaccuracies/lack of touch were an issue, the much bigger issue last year was his inability to make those reads quickly enough due to his lack of experience/practice in JoMo's system. Too much, "thinking" in a spot where a split-second can be the difference, not just in making and completing a pass attempt, but in being able to, "hit the hole" while it is still open, running when the pass isn't there. It looked to me there were too many times where Fitz would look pass, then decide to run just a little too late, resulting in the pocket collapsing on him by the time he decided to take off.

On top of that, I'm sure JoMo expected our WR's to be able to catch better than an average high-schooler. So, this year, we likely have a QB who is capable and experienced in the system...not needing to learn it during the season...not needing the extra time to make reads. And how can we not expect to get better performances from our WR's? We've added some proven talent, and there's nowhere to go but up for the guys we had last year. Hopefully their play will improve.

If this does come to fruition, our offense could be significantly improved. It could be improved enough to make our point differential more positive than last year, despite our losses on defense. It also has a decent chance to make us more competitive vs the really good defenses we face this year.

If you are stupid enough to make any kind of season prediction based on what a coach says at media day you are too stupid to have your prediction taken seriously.
