Well, it's apparently true that this media blackout on TU football is all KDub's doing. At first, I thought he P.O'd Mike Brown, the Tulsa World College Sports editor. And Kelly Hines might feel guilty taking her paycheck for no more than has been written in the TW on us. But no, very few others have written a word, either.
Coach W. will bring us back to respectability with more people to come this season plus one more recruiting class. Of this, I have no doubt. Having said that, I, too, don't like the all-press virtual blackout on anything TU football related. Nothing on the team as a whole, nothing of a human interest-related nature on individual players. We have several(some newly recruited) guys from Tulsa and Oklahoma, something about them. But it's nada, zip, zilch, bupkus, etc.
Surely for fall camp he will grant access to the press & get them back on his side (if not already).

In fact we could re-write the whole history of Tulsa football in Shakespearean tragedy casting Dave Rader as Julius Caesar, Rick Dickson as King Lear, and Bill Blankenship as Richard II. Whether Wilson is cast as Touchstone remains to be seen.

Three of the nation’s foremost respected Austen scholars are on campus now. The Shakespeare folks aren’t shabby either. Do we even have a Joyce scholar anymore?
He also has a JD so he's not devoid of advanced degrees, though for some PhDs, having a JD or MBA is akin to having your welding degree.
Yes, the current Joyce scholar also doubles as the director of the Bob Dylan institute. Quite a combination if you ask me.
He’s also a former coach with the Owasso Soccer Club.
Wouldn't you know it? I gripe above about a virtual press blackout on our beloved football team and Hines and the TW do about 12 column inches this morning on the spring camp wrap-up. KDub pretty much goes back to basics, looked for energy, hustle and buy-in to the staff's way of practicing and found it. He's very happy with spring camp results, loves being here and looks to add some more transfers, which still might include a DC. Nothing about particular groups or who's doing what, where.(although he's said in the past that our back line on D is a strength) But that's OK. He also announced eight weeks of a structured physical work-out program during the summer.
Sean Latham. Neither of my kids took any classes with him, but he was a good coach and treated all the girls fairly.
I take KW at this word. He doesn’t seem the type to blow smoke; in fact, I think he is more likely to downplay things. So when he talks about how pleasantly surprised he is at the talent/ physicality level, I really am happy to hear that. He’s been around some of the top talent in the nation previously so that gives me hope.
At his presser he did mention he was happy with the DL and named everyone DL/DE. He also said he was happy with the linebackers. He talked about the RB group being talented with some good players but noted that they needed to be more creative consistent.
Thanks to Bill L. for tipping us off on the recent TU press conf. on the spring camp wrap-up. Any TU football fan, whether with lingering doubts on KDub or full bore confidence in him must watch it. It's on the TU website &/or YouTube.
What struck me as most interesting was his allowing the squad to elect 12 players as basically team leaders or "platoon sargents". Each has 8 to 10 players under their wing to pass along info from the coach on upcoming practice times, meetings, keeping up to speed on workouts, keeping an eye on class attendance and generally an eyeball on how their group of guys are doing. This is NOT just to make KDub's job easier, but to make certain information coming from players whom all the guys respect, rather than the coach.
I like it! This modified military style will only help the squad keep up to speed and help instill some needed discipline that we all know was sorely lacking under the previous staff. To me, this is not about whistle blowers but rather having your peers, that you respect, provide certain info. And all coaches are, of course, still available for whatever might come up.
Also of note is an interview with a couple of former walk-ons, now on scholarship, that figure to start at their positions: Kamdyn Benjamin and Mitchell Culkin. Watch it on either media.

Wilson seems to have accountability as a major goal here. That was sorely lacking during the Monty years and will be a welcome change.
"Military Style" only works when you have the logistics behind it to back it up....

Curious to see how “military style” works with the athletes of today. Especially if they don’t see a great deal of success. I’m old school (hell…just old) so it’s the type of coaching which I’m familiar. If it works we could have something special.

Anybody notice we've got a walkon punter, Scott Stanford out of Katy, Texas.(All State 5a) Came in early Feb, and the media hasn't seemed to notice.
I don’t think Quincy meant military style in the way it’s being discussed here. I believe he just meant instead of top down, there is responsibility and accountability from the general to the captains to sergeants. He is building buy-in from all the players, while developing leaders on the team. I like it.
People overlooked the word "modified" military style in my post. This is not boot camp or active duty military type stuff that I'm referring to, but rather what Hank Kendall said better than me above.
Well for me if we win, and don't lead the nation in penalties and snatching defeats out of victories all will be forgiven.
Been lots of complaining about not having a punter though, so now we can put that to rest.

I looked up Stanford in high school he averaged 45 yards his junior year. Looks like we got a good one
I think "military style" is in reference to structure only in terms of leaders and "platoons" under them. It's more of a peer accountability network to be honest.
There was a tweet from KW during Spring practices that was to the effect of 'Look-iee here, I spy a punter" and showed a punter in a TU practice jersey. I am assuming this is the kid he was referring to.
I don't have a problem with it provided they've put in the work to be ready to step into a starting role, and beat out other guys for their position, regardless of where they started. Hell, we all know that Monty left tons of talent on the bench.
If I remember correctly Benjamin was a preferred walk on at the receiver position and Kuklin is a senior LB from Jenks, who during his time here played behind some pretty dynamic players at the LB position.
The distance between PWO and 2 star scholarship guy at Tulsa is often where you went to high school or what the depth numbers look like at your position that year and your grades. If you can qualify for 100% academic scholarship and your position room is top heavy, why not PWO you then add you on scholarship when the seniors graduate? I assume that’s what happened with Kulkin. Benjamin’s dad was Monty’s roommate in college. So there’s that. That said, he went to Cedar Hill high school and that was once a Tulsa pipeline. Wilson name checking the female AD and head coach in the interview was not accident I’m sure. Benjamin hosting recruits and going home and telling the weight room he got a great deal at Tulsa when nobody else trusted him is solid gold as far as I’m concerned. And more valuable in the long run for a program like Tulsa than increasing our punt return average by 5 yards if you bench him and bring in somebody new.
