Scoring Defense Matters

The only team to win a National Championship since 2000 with an average defense was Auburn in the 2010 season. They had a Scoring Defense Rank of 53 in the regular season. Otherwise most teams had a Scoring Defense Rank above 20 with a majority in the Top 10.

These posts are hilarious. Do you really think Scott Frost doesn't know what it takes to win at the highest level of college football?

Using this system.

As an assistant:
10-3 #11
12-1 #3
12-2 #4
12-1 #2

As an OC:
11-2 #9
13-2 #2
9-4 #19

As a HC:
6-7 NR
13-0 #6

I think he knows how to pair a defense with this offense to win big.

No one care about good defense anymore, NU can win b
If everyone knows so much about what schemes to run, why are they wasting time on a message board? P5 coaching pays well.

Reminds me of Uncle Rico

Why are you here? Stop participating here and just listen to Frost's press conference, very few P 5 coaches on this board.

The reason we have a sucky defense is all the great D coaches are on busy posting on this board. I wonder why Scott hasn't reached out to you all?

Unfortunately, the Husker offense nullified great defensive efforts in 2009, but averaging about 12 ppg, the Black Shirts were solid in most games but one, Texas Tech.

Actually That Nebraska team held Mike Leach to his lowest offensive yardage total ever, under 280 yards.

But the Huskers were a dumpster fire offensively, and gave the Red Raiders 2 easy scores while setting their offense up for short drives.

Scoring defense is an excellent stat, but it doesn't really measure defense. Its a comprehensive measurement of special teams, turnovers, defense, and field position.

Secondly, you can be a middle of the road team in total defense but have a very good scoring defense.

Must we bring up the Iowa State game? Or the last minute Secondary breakdown vs Va Tech? Had we had an offense worth a damn we would have been playing for the ship.

My job is done here.

Nebraska fans won't put up with Chin's nonsense, if it continues, he either changes or he's history.

It's laughable that the peanut gallery thinks 1) they know better than Scott Frost (who is being paid over 90k a week to coach here) 2) Frost should fire one of his best friends and Defensive Coordinator because we aren't a dominant defense 10 games into his tenure.

Agreed. Except change the word dominant to average.

Scott Frost may prove to the one of the best coaches in NU history. He may not but at this point he has not accomplished anything that puts him on a pedestal and makes him immune from normal questioning! Osborne went thru it. Now Frost gets to go thru it. Part of being in the glass house Nebraska football. Frost is not above reproach and questioning him does not make someone want him gone already!

And I have seen no one asking for an immediate dominant defense. But asking for average is not asking to much 10 games into this regime!

I don't see any #1's there...

I think it's a valid concern. Oregon still has an empty trophy case too.

Defenses win championships is how the old saying goes, and the data seems to back that up.

Are you kidding? Three straight top 5 finishes, 5 straight top 10's, an undefeated season. And the trophy case is far from empty. 4 Pac-12 Championships, an AAC Championship, 2 Rose Bowl wins, 2 Championship game appearances, a Heisman Trophy winner. They were in the hunt year after year, that's what is important. Put yourself in the conversation every year and eventually you will win some (see Nebraska in the 80's and 90's). What they did is a whole lot more impressive than a flash in the pan like Auburn, who won a MNC out of nowhere (mostly by purchasing Cam Newton) and immediately returned to mediocracy.

I'm not even asking for average at this point. Anything but abysmal would work for me. One that doesn't completely **** the bed when we have a 10-point lead with less than 5 minutes left in the game would work for me.

No one claims to be an expert, just use your own eyes and observe our D performance. Doesn't take Bill Belichik to tell you our D is horrible, use your own eyes.

Cracks me up as this is a Husker board that is filled with peoples thoughts but every once in awhile someone thinks that people are not supposed to have opinions about things. Why do those people read these boards if they are just going to say people should not be allowed to express their opinions!
