[h=1]Ole Miss Football: Five Years With Hugh Freeze, Was It Worth It?[/h]by Jim Schute

[h=2]Ole Miss football will kick off their 2017 season in less than a week. There has never been a more dramatic off season in the history of Rebel football.[/h]Like many Ole Miss football fans, as I reflect on what has transpired over the last six months from the Notice of Allegations to the resignation of Head Coach Hugh Freeze I went through the stages of loss. I will never forget the evening of July 20th when I got the phone call of Freeze’s resignation.

First I was in total shock, then a few days later came the sadness followed by anger. With that, I’ve asked several of my Rebel friends a question that I will ask you. Would you still have hired Hugh Freeze if you knew what the end result would be. So, I thought long and hard what my answer to that question would be. So here goes.

[h=2]How It Began For Me[/h]On November 19th, 2011, my good friend and fraternity brother Brien Straw and I had fifty yard line seats in Vaught Hemingway Stadium and watched LSU completely obliterate Ole Miss 52-3.

Not only was it one of the worst losses in Ole Miss football history but we sat there and watched LSU take a knee with around six minutes left in the game which was a gift of mercy by then LSU Head Coach Les Miles.
For me, at least, this was the all time low in my forty-two years of watching Ole Miss football. It was such a feeling of helplessness and despair that I thought we would never climb out of the hole that we were in. Houston Nutt left us in a state of total devastation to the point I thought about giving up.

When Archie Manning and Mike Glenn led the search for a new coach, I was certain they would land the next Nick Saban for Ole Miss. Surely they would go after the big name or home run hire. When Hugh Freeze was hired I was surprised and was quite frankly disappointed. I watched his introductory press conference and I could tell there was something special about Hugh Freeze, so I was willing to give him a chance.
[h=2]Freeze Era Begins[/h]That first season in 2012 was one of low expectations as we had many holes and players that were on thin ice academically. I attended my first Freeze led game against Texas where we were soundly defeated 66-31 but there was something different about this team. We had some heart breaking losses down the stretch but when we went down to LSU and came within an inch of beating a truly great team, it was obvious things were changing. It came to fruition with an emotional Egg Bowl victory over MSU and Dan Mullen and an overwhelming victory over Pittsburgh in the BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham. That was only the beginning.
The 2013 recruiting class was one of legends and the publicity that Ole Miss received by bringing in Robert Nkemdiche, Laquon Treadwell, Laremy Tunsil, Tony Conner, etc. was like nothing we have ever seen in Oxford. The 2013 season had it’s ups and downs with beating Texas in Austin to the big upset over LSU to the heartbreaking loss to MSU in the Egg Bowl. We salvaged the season with a victory over Georgia Tech in the Music City Bowl in Nashville.

Then came 2014. Oh what a memorable season that was. Saturday, October 4th is a day that I will never forget. College Game Day came to Oxford for the Ole Miss-Alabama game with Katy Perry and a beautiful fall day. The come from behind victory over Alabama may be the best experience I’ve ever had at an Ole Miss football game. We started 7-0 that season for the first time since 1960, but a horrific injury to Laquon Treadwell against Auburn turned our season south a bit culminating in a loss to TCU in the Peach Bowl.
[h=2]The Beginning Of The End[/h]The 2015 season started off great again and Ole Miss beat Alabama for the second year in a row in Tuscaloosa. Who beats a Nick Saban Alabama twice in a row? Nobody except Ole Miss! Only a fluke play by Arkansas kept Ole Miss out of the SEC Championship game but we returned to the Sugar Bowl and destroyed Oklahoma State behind Chad Kelly, Laquon Treadwell, Laremy Tunsil and company.

We were on top of the world and we thought in a position to win it all in 2016. Right before signing day in 2016 things began to change with the news that the NCAA was investigating Ole Miss for recruiting violations. Freeze and company still landed another top five class so it seemed business as usual. Or at least we thought it was.
I’m not going to rehash the 2016 season as it was a painful one. We had both Florida State and Alabama beat and let both games slip away. By the time we played Mississippi State we were minus eleven players to injury who suited up against Florida State. In April, 2016 we had the Tunsil draft night disaster which I still believe was a set up, but that’s a discussion for another day.
After the 2016 season ended, we began our defense of the program and Hugh Freeze versus the NCAA. We stood behind Coach Freeze and believed he was the man to lead us through this wilderness. The revelations of July 20th and the phone calls on the University phone by Freeze to an escort service ultimately led to his dismissal. This in my mind was one of the saddest days in Ole Miss football history.
[h=2]So Was Freeze Worth It[/h]So, back to the question at the beginning of this article. Was it worth it? If you knew where we would be today, would you still have hired Hugh Freeze? I thought long and hard about this before I made my decision. I believe Hugh Freeze is a great football coach and a good and Godly man. It’s not for me to judge his personal life for I am a sinner so I’m not going to cast stones. I believe he made mistakes as we all do in both our personal and professional lives.

I believe for whatever reason there was sloppiness in the recruiting practices that ultimately led to his downfall with the NCAA. My belief on cheating by most SEC schools is something we can debate for hours. So, for me after over thirty days to think about this, for me, it was worth hiring Hugh Freeze. The two wins over Alabama, the Sugar Bowl victory, College Game Day coming to Oxford, the wins over Mississippi State and Dak Prescott in 2014 and 2015 were priceless. I experienced some of the best moments since Archie Manning was scrambling all over the field in 1969 and 1970.

So there you have it. I would have still hired Hugh Freeze. I believe his lack of experience in big time college football recruiting cost him with the NCAA. His personal life is something he and his family have to work through and they deserve their privacy to do just that. So thank you Coach Freeze for some great victories and memories. I for one, will cherish them the rest of my days on this earth. Hotty Toddy!

The Freeze era is one of, if not the, best things that ever happened to MSU football.

Updated version to be released in early December:

"I believe for whatever reason there was sloppiness in the recruiting practices that ultimately led to his downfall with the NCAA. My belief on cheating by most SEC schools is something we can debate for hours. So, for me after over thirty days to think about this, for me, it was worth hiring Hugh Freeze. The two vacated wins over Alabama, the vacated Sugar Bowl victory, College Game Day coming to Oxford, the vacated wins over Mississippi State and Dak Prescott in 2014 and 2015 were priceless. I experienced some of the best moments since Archie Manning was scrambling all over the field in 1969 and 1970."

Schute isn't about to let State fans (or any fans) know that he's suicidal about their current situation. Just like many of their fans, he simply isn't capable of admitting they are wrong.

A mistake is when I miss my exit on I-40 or forget to take the tots out of the fryer. What Freeze did is about character and so is this drivel.

My favorite part is where he calls out Archie as being the architect of the hiring of the cluster17 known as Hugh Freeze.

If the lsu mercy knees were tough on him, he has some rough days ahead. Once the NCAA opens the gates for transfers, there will be no talent left.

He needs to revisit this in about five years when it's not just LSU taking knees on them with 6 minutes left in the game.

There is no way in Hell I would ever trade a Peach Bowl appearance and a Sugar Bowl win for five years or whatever they get of probation if the shoe was on the other foot. Even if they threw in the interlocking MSU to sweeten the deal.

Phone call?

I will never forget the evening of July 20th when I got the phone call of Freeze’s resignation.

He didn't just see it on Twitter or the news like everyone else?

He makes it sound like he was McCartney getting the phone call that Lennon was shot.

Or DeNiro in the phone booth in Goodfellas.

I like that he said he would ask us all a question now that he has been asking himself and he had the audacity to not even use a question mark when he asked it. This guy is brilliant.

I believe we're going to find Shute face-down in a hotel swimming pool

The tox-screen will show high amounts of Zima and Xanax.

Don't you think he knows what's coming?

I'm sure he thinks the NCAA will erase the self-imposed penalties, issue them a letter pleading Forgiveness for this egregious misunderstanding and everyone, including Leo Lewis, will join hands while singing Dixie and hollering "Hotty Toddy"!

Hey Jim...how about the "fluke play" that, combined with 7 Bama turnovers and a couple of blatantly missed "O-linemen downfield" no-calls, allowed you to beat Bama by 6?

If not for all that BS, winning the UPig game would not have won you the West anyway, you moronic hack.

Something happened to those people a long time ago. I thought I knew what it was, but as it turns out, it's worse than I thought.

By saying "it was worth it" what he really means is we should think it was worth it. Hey Jim, I agree.

He says "Houston Nutt left us in a state of total devastation to the point I thought about giving up."

....but it's all good now?

Schute also believes (still) Freeze is a "Godly man". He also says he's "not going to cast stones"...
that's all he has been doing on Twitter for years now!

Let us revisit this issue (thinking it was worth it) periodically in the next year, 2, 3, 4 and beyond.

this silly SOB will be ready to hang Hugh and his whole family

How anybody, especially someone who claims to be a fan of Ole Miss, can say that hiring Hugh Freeze was worth it is incredible.

I still believe that the majority of their fanbase would support rehiring that self-righteous 17. If you don't believe me, go look at is replies and mentions on twitter. Yes, I realize that's mostly the lunatic-fringe, but there is a 17-ton of them. Ask your sane rebel friends and colleagues, and you'll be shocked by how many would be ok with Hugh 2.0

Someone with a large, >1000, twitter following post a poll and see what happens. Someone send it to Bo Bounds or any other media personality.

Can't wait to see the sequel to this article in 5 years.

It's way too early for Ole Miss fans to deciding if it was worth it or not. They haven't even faced any consequences yet

If LSU. Beating them 52-3 is a low point just wait another year or maybe two. LSU just might take a knee before the first half is over.

"Jim? Hey, it's Ross. Look buddy, I got some bad news and I just wanted to be the one to talk to you before you hear it on Sportscenter. Yeah, were gonna have to let Hugh go. Officially it'll be a resignation, but don't use the word 'fired' on Twitter, okay? Yeah. Uh-huh. I know, I know. Hey, I gotta run to this press conference, I'll fill you in on the details later. Keep your chin up, I'm gonna need you for the search committee. Off the record, of course."

So there you have it. I would have still hired Hugh Freeze.

Since OM hired Bucky, MSU under Mullen still won more games even before any are vacated AND IS NOT facing NCAA Armageddon and resulting sanctions. Oh, AND that 2011 loss to LSU that Shute found so humiliating .. is but a foreshadowing of games to come .. for years to come .. in the desert they now call Vaught-Hemingway.

this schute guy's take on the past 6 years shows exactly what is wrong with the bears. it is not something that can be corrected either. their alumni/fanbase are bent/broken, just wrong. that worldview of the end justifies the means goes against everything that this country was founded on. you can see the results of this evil spirit in the children of friends who send them up there because they went there and are horrified to see what the kids become by the time they get out. some have even lost them to suicide, drug addiction, LGBT-ness, political-activism, and such arrogance that they are no longer recognizable. the NCAA was right; it is a "culture", and it is not a good one either....

Let's see what he thinks in 3 years. When the full weight of the sanctions is being felt and there's no relief in sight.

its easy to say yeah, it was worth it 13 days before the consequences are known. if the ncaa abolishes football in oxford by massive scholarship reductions, visit reductions, vacated wins, probation, and additional bowl bans, its going to be hard for even the dumbest of the cult to say it was worth it. that said, if anybody is going to say, yeah, that 9 win regular season was worth it, its going to be the jim schute types that have bigger shoe sizes than iq's.
