give him the co def coordinator job (to let Chins save face) - pay him a crap load - let him further rehab his reputation for a year or 2 before he gets a head coaching job at which time we can hope that Chin has learned something and grown into the role

My take is he is a coach who wants to be a head coach somewhere where he has a decent chance to win. Rutgers facilities are a joke. They still practice in an inflatable bubble field house. They share other facilities with other sports teams on campus. In modern B1G football you have to do better than that in order to recruit. Schiano knows this which is why it was part of his demands.
Ok. So you are saying the buyout is/was related to the walk if no facilities. Not buyout if someone else hired him away from Rutgers.
He needs job security when he inevitably wins 1-2 games his first 2 years due to what he'd inherit
I know boosters at Rutgers. My son in law is connected there. The buyout and facilities are linked. Schiano doesn’t want to come back unless they are 100% committed to excellence in the football program. He knows they are a bush league football program without those upgrades.

I think he is being very shrewd here. He wants the Rutgers job. But only if they seriously commit to football. When he was there before, Rutgers was not in the B1G. He knows damn well that Rutgers will continue to be the worst team in the B1G, even if he is the coach, if they don’t upgrade facilities. So that is why he wants to be able to walk away without penalty if they fail to do so.
He knows he is damaged goods. But that means he can’t afford a disastrous run at Rutgers. He needs them to commit to excellence.

Budget for salaries for assistant coaches was another issue.

If we were going to bring in a co-DC, just get rid of Chinander. If he was truly an elite coordinator, he wouldn't accept a co-DC title anyway.

Maybe. But he has had his shot at other venues. This feels like him wanting to come “home”. I personally think he is viewing this as his destination job if he is able to turn them around.

Rutgers needs Schiano a lot more than Schiano needs Rutgers. He should hold out until he gets everything to make him comfortable, in writing. He's got bank, in the bank. He doesn't have to sign up for a crap job with a crap boss.
Yeah, You are probably right and I am sure he has a lot of cash...but he could still sign that contract, all the money is going to be his no matter if he does a good job or a bad job. Best case, he bolts in 3 years after he makes RU decent...worst case...he is canned in 3 years...either way he gets like another 20+ million.

I'm not so sure about that right now. To me given some of the issues he's had, he should jump at any reasonable offer a P5 school makes him. I think he's stupid to turn down what Rutgers offered.
he’s been on the visitors sideline 3 times in the recent past. We are 0-3 in those games. The losses have been by an average of nearly 6 touchdowns

Schiano is an ELITE dc. Belichick offered him the keys to the castle and he turned him down. Greg will be a top 5 head coach in the B1G the day he signs his contract
Schiano has all the leverage here, if we divided up in ratio's...Schiano has 95% of it, and Rutgers only 5
I have been to Rutgers for five games, one with the Huskers. My son in law is from Jersey and has season tickets. The word “lame” is the best I can use to describe Rutgers football. The game day atmosphere is pitiful and the stadium is usually only half full... until halftime, when it really empties out. The facilities are bush league and student support for the program is negligible.
Rutgers would be damn lucky to get Schiano to come back. He is clearly their best option. They should pay him what he wants and commit to much better facilities. If they don’t they are just looking at several more years of futility.
