Congrats to Greg. JG should really help Greg’s defense too. Perfect scout team QB for Greg to figure out how to defend the spread.

The people who are surprised by this are the same people who laughed and ridiculed the Schiano to NFL rumors back when it happened. He could recruit and had charisma for a program that absolutely sucked when he took over. Schiano and Mulcahey got us into the B1G. After being subjected to the crap we've endured for the last 5 or 6 years you'd think people would realize that we could do a lot worse than having Greg Schiano as HC at Rutgers.

And what's even crazier is some of these same fans, a couple in this thread, were some of the biggest proponents for keeping Flood. Truly amazing.

Frost has to jump at Nebraska now (if he had interest in UF).

Not many Power 5 seats left or guys on the hot seat going into 2018, besides ND.
Sounds like he was leaning towards Nebraska from what I've read that's why they're moving towards Mullen now. I kind of think Mullen is more "proven" myself but that seemed to be UF's order.

I wonder if he will coach in their bowl game?

I think they finished 4-8 and won't be in a bowl game. They didn't win a conference game this season, which might be the first time ever that happened.

In any event, I also appreciate what GS did for Rutgers football and wish him the best. That said, I hope he sticks to recruiting Florida and leaves NJ alone!

I find it interesting listening to the talking heads that Kelly chose UCLA over UF. I guess the guy knows himself. Many taking the side that he isn't an power program kind of coach to handle the stress and everything else thst comes running that type of program.

Tennessee legislature now involved, trying to get the school to back out of agreement with Schiano. Wow.

Knew the hire would cause backlash...but not this much.

I just threw up in my mouth.

Walks into Don Bosco living room: "hey kid, remember when you were 7 or 8 and Rutgers was kicking *** and you could hear the stadium's R! U! from here? I'm the guy who made it happen. Let's go."

Yup I was saying the same thing from what you read about him. He wants to be able to win big but at a place as far out of the public eye as you can be while still doing that. You think LA the 2nd largest market in the country what the hell are you talking about. Well he's just one of many there and USC is really the big dog lately and basketball is the premier sport at UCLA so it's go the ingredients but is also somewhat under the radar.

Leach is somewhat similar in my mind, which is why I was a little surprised reading some of the Leach to Tenn rumors. It doesn't seem like his type of fit. Arkansas which is also rumored seems like a better fit for him should he leave WSU.

Coaches make full use of their networking. It was the right time for Schiano to make a move, OSU is still doing good and Schiano isn't getting any younger. Good for him!

WOW... Tennessee fans on Main Board rather have Petrino than Schiano... Perino!

Serious question. If TN Politicians are successful in voiding this agreement, does this make Schiano untouchable to hire, esp in NJ? Fans, and I guess politicians, are throwing Sandusky grenades all over this that NJ. COM would have field days covering this if this was Rutgers.

You know that's a good point, seeing all the negativity from Tenn fans.
If I could post a pic of Rich Rod in that Mich uniform I would, but I can't on this stupid phone.

If the fan base is against you from the start it will eat at the program (operations, admins, trainers, coaches, players...)

Vkj's coaching peedictions have been god awful.
What predictions. This was the only one I made. With kelly I was simply reporting what football scoop was saying. That's not a prediction. I still stand by this being a bad hire. 8-5 9-4 ain't gonna get it done for Vol nation. With the talent they have I bet they expect 10 wins next year.

- weird fit IMHO Not really sure how the good old boys are going to like him, especially if he comes off as arrogant self at the initial presser, but congrats to him!

- Tennessee gets the vast majority of their kids from interstate, North Carolina, and Georgia, they will continue to do it that way not too worried about him coming into New Jersey and taking kids over Michigan or Ohio State. Disagree with those who think that will be the case

- Better there than any big 10 school

- Good luck Greg

Well this one was bad enough to stand out on its own, then, lol. You didn't think GS was P5 material ...he snags one of the biggest P5 openings.

I agree that it's a questionable hire for Tenn. But I think people here highly undervalued his resume. We talk about how bad our perception is outside RU circles ...well, Schiano was the guy who built it up out of nothing ... and it was crap before and after him. Coaching in the NFL is a plus, not a minus. A lot of college coaches flame out in NFL - but the fact they were even hired at that level to begin with sticks out. Then DC at top 10-level OSU.

Looks pretty damn good on paper.

Would have thought something along the lines of Ark or ASU, with Tenn and UF angling more for proven recent winners at lower P5 or AAC level, but I question how many other candidates out there really have a more compelling resume than Schiano.

Schiano most likely won’t succeed because of his offense but I think Tennessee fans won’t be very patience and whoever they hire will fail.

Yeah, that's it! Because no one else would want that job. What a tool!
Huh? Schiano was their third (last) option after Gruden and Mullen per their boards so not sure who you are calling a tool. Their fanbase is in hysterics right now because again because they wanted Gruden so bad.

Sure but how does this look on paper?
Head coach for 11 years:
Never won a conference title
Never finished better than 3rd in recruiting in conference.
Never went to a BCS game
Never won a major bowl
Had a below 500 conference record
Repeatedly given up 30 plus points as DC at a school stocked with 5 star talent
Lost to Burch Jones 36--10 in year 10?

Happy for Greg but surprised he would throw himself into such a brutal job site. But, most big jobs are probably just as brutal. Good luck to him.

And another State Rep:
Former Vols unhappy:

This one is hilarious:

So, it looks like there are a lot of folks outside Rutgers who are not warm to Greg Schiano being their Head Coach. Seem more vocal than the RU haters.

From the Continent :

@ChrisCarlin: "Schiano to Tennessee was very predictable. Great spot for him. The guy is a program builder. If you think it's a bad hire, you don't know college football".

You're again missing how bad the perception of RU is, which tempers how bad that looks. The .500 number is also ******** used to make a point, given that it's driven by all tjose losses that came while he was building things from scratch.

I agree with you in thinking Tenn would have looked at it your way - they need a gameday force, not a program builder. But would think Gary would land a P5, esp in a year like this one.

But just imagine if Greg finally saw the light and actually makes a legitimate HR hire for an OC?
He could become the next Saban. He might have had the formula at Rutgers but couldn’t hire the right OC because of money and because the Top QB recruits wouldn’t gamble on Rutgers.
