Yes, if a guy asks an unattractive girl to the prom, it can both be true that either way he looks bad, if she says yes, he's shows up at the prom with an ugly girl and gets ridiculed, if she says no, then he gets ridiculed that even an ugly girl doesn't want to go with him.

This analogy completely ignores that Pope already has Moreno, a potential draft pick, coming back.....hopefully

We missed out on a guy who couldn't score a point, I'm not sure it matters.
Let’s hope that’s the version LSU is getting. With all of the money LSU is paying its former football coaches, how do they have any money to pay anybody if everybody is getting millions?

It's really not about what we thought of Santos, it's that MP thought highly enough of him to fly across the world to try to get him. So MP must have thought pretty highly of him, and put on a full court press to sign him, and he said no to UK and MP. The fact that he might not be that good is really beside the point, in fact the worse he is, the worse this whole thing looks.
Boy, some of you sure are worried about what others think. Maybe try to grow some thicker skin. The drama on here for everything Pope does or doesn’t do is over the top. Step away from the ledge.

From the context of just this recruitment, I personally want a coach that travels wherever needed to try to flip a commit, even if it's a backup center. Pope probably thought the personal touch may be enough to get him to come to UK as a backup C, rather than a starter at lowly LSU.

Pope has much bigger problems. Missing on all the others as well, creating an embarrassing trend. Maybe being behind in the recruitment or unorganized from the beginning and not realizing you are being used by players' agents to drive up the cost, rather than real interest are issues.
I think the problem is that MP is recruiting the way he was recruited as a kid in the 90s. Like how it went in the movie like Blue Chips, where the kid is wide eyed and the coach comes in and gives a pep talk about how you need to play for me, and throws in a few side benefits, and the kid says ok.

That is not how recruiting in done now, it's all slick presentations, business propositions, corporate and high finance, ready to talk numbers and spreadsheets, revenue and future income projections, etc. and he rolls in and looks weird to recruits who are now used to and expect a more professional and business tone.

You are completely missing the point. NO ONE wants to play for Pope. It doesn’t matter what others think unless those “others” are players. Recruits. It is obvious what PLAYERS think of Pope.

If Lsu was offering a starting spot and/or more money plus him knowing Moreno is our starting 5, then why fly in to a war zone for a backup??? Assuming MM comes back I know, but this isn’t like flying to Cali or Fla to see someone.

Pope goes to see Santos, RR reaction: We don't want him, he is a scrub

Santos signs with LSU, RR reaction: Can't believe Pope didn't sign this kid, cancel the season
There was nothing impressive about him in my opinion, so personally I'm not concerned we lost him. But Pope obviously wanted him and wasn't able to land his target once again. That's the problem. Two things can be true at once.

So…hows errbody enjoying year 3 of the Mark Pope era so far?
Well 3 or 4 mouth breathers keep making excuses. About a dozen or so want us to know that he’s “GeTtiNg a THirD year!! No mAtteR wut” (like we all don’t know that) so they aren’t gonna be negative at all because they’re sooo smart and like being preachy.

Rest of us are rightly embarrassed and plssed.

Geez. What an arsehole analogy.

But, I get it. You make fun of your friend for liking a girl you think is ugly and then make fun of him if that girl turns him down, even if your friend has dated a lot of hot girls in the past. That’s you. Thanks.

Doesn’t change the fact that Pope will be criticized by some of you for anything he does.

BTW, I think Santos was a good get. Only the truly ignorant would focus on one game for the decision. He played at a high level and will be a man. Just because some dude Goodman trusts says he cannot play defense, I would not pass on Santos. He would have been a perfect experienced addition for a reserve role. Seems LSU paid him stater money. I wonder if that check went up because Pope put on the press. IDK

Will Wade with those strong @$$ offers are alive and well in Baton Rouge.
Why are all the scummy coaches in the SEC now and we're literally stuck with the nice guy and the JMI deal of top-button mitch?

The sentiment on Santos after Pope went and saw him last week shouldn’t change at all. Undersized center that struggles on defense and when Pope (for whatever reason) flew to go watch him put up a whopping zero points on 4 shots in 12 minutes. This is more of another PR hit rather than an actual loss in terms of talent on the roster IMO.

No clue, wish I knew, all ik is that their roster is decimated and Will Wade said they’re going fully international outside of Mo, so probably just a better opportunity to start
Opportunity to start and probably more money than UK would offer for a backup role.

That’s what I’m thinking too, Wade has been super vocal about the NIL support he was getting, so wouldn’t be surprised that he’d dump out the money

Classic strawman argument by a member of Popes cult.

No one has said a thing about this guy actually being good, but everyone is shaking their heads at the fact that Pope used resources to go to the Middle East to see this scrub, and he still missed on him.
Pope's cult is that all you got? nowhere have I said one way or the other about pope ,just pointing out the damn if you do or damn if you don't asinine crowd philosophy . I want pope gone too, if he does not produce next year . 3 year grace guy here .this program was in shambles long before pope got here .

Round-trip flights from Lexington, KY (LEX) to Tel Aviv (TLV) typically cost between $1,300 and $2,100, with prices fluctuating based on demand and season. Budget around $1,100 for one-way, with potential to find lower, "hack" fares, often involving two or more stops, say. September is often cheaper, while summer and holiday seasons are higher
You think he flew commercial? Most likely a PJ.

The first line of Mark Pope's scrutiny should be:
Mark Pope flew across the world to recruit Márcio Santos, but the Brazilian center has opted for a different SEC program.

him in a nutshell. I cannot think of a better 1 sentence description

Agree on Pilgrim.

He’s a terrible journalist. He’s often wrong on predictions but is decent at Monday morning quarterbacking.

Dude is a fan boi with a press credential. Might as well credential some rando from this board. Same level of credibility.
Couldn’t agree more. He’s a walking bobble head, too. He’s gonna give himself whiplash one of these days.

He had to fly to Israel to find that out???
We need a back up center and he gave it a go like he should even if it is an uphill battle because slim always beats none and maybe it wasn't particularly that slim.

The big man market is tough, there are few if any layups to be had but you still have to take the swings you can.

If he were to be granted a fifth year of eligibility, which I know is not probable, and he is looking for another of college and not the NBA, I would like to see us pick up Baba Miller.
My guess is he will move on to the NBA ... but he is listed in the transfer portal right now. ?????

I don't care that we missed on this guy, I just don't understand why Pope put any time or effort into him in the first place. Surely he could find a similar or better player that didn't involve flying to Israel for a dude who had one foot through the doorway with another school.
Its nothing more than incompetence by Pope.
