Unfortunately, not sure how long we keep him, not $$$, but he wants to be a HC again (soon)

Enjoying having him on staff as long as we can though

If he wants to be a head coach, he's in about the best spot possible to become one. Troy Walters has been looking and he'll get a HC job some day soon. When that happens I think the most likely guy to be Frost's OC would be Held. IF Frost has the kind of success most of us think he'll have, Held will be a hot commodity within probably the next 5-6 years. In the mean time he's one of the highest paid RB coaches in the country and likewise would get a nice bump IF he ever becomes our OC.

Sooner than that if they're having success. 2-3 years.

He is also actively looking to get back to HC

Sounds like all the same rhetoric that was posted about Bill Busch, Keith Williams, John Blake, etc.

His current pay includes recruiting.

I don't see the point you are trying to make. Pointing out that a coach is doing a great job is "rhetoric"? His RB's also did a great job on the field last year too. btw. The guy is getting it done and I hope we compensate him and keep him around.

Agree, he will not be here long. When Nebraska starts having success in the W-L area, it wont be long before schools come calling. I would bet he is gone in 2 or 3 years. I know with success comes losing coaches, but I really hope these guys can stick it out to win a NC together. They really seem like a bonded group of coaches, that translates to a bonded football program.

Really? My sense is that Held is one of the lower paid RB coaches. He's NOT listed among the top 12 RB coaching salaries by FootballScoop. He made $300K in 2018 while the top RB coach (at LSU) made $600K. The 12th highest RB coach made $370K. For what he did with Ozigbo and Washington and especially for what he has accomplished in recruiting, he deserves more pay IMO. He certainly has put his immediate predecessor at Nebraska (Reggie) to shame.

You would be wrong about him being one of the LOWER paid RB coaches. His listed salary paid by the University is $300,000. That does not include earnings from camps and other side benefits. The average for ALL assistants including coordinators is just over $300K. There are roughly 130 FBS D-1 teams. Not making the the top 12 out of 130 RB coaches does not mean he's not one of the top paid RB coaches. I guess it depends on what one decides "top" is. It's not like he's the RB coach at UAB. I think he got a roughly $100,000 raise to come to NU from UCF. I'm not arguing that Frost shouldn't give him a raise. My point was that the guy has a great job, he's well paid at a school he loves AND he has the potential for rapid career advancement if he stays for a couple of years. IMO, he would be foolish to leave for some lower tier job. JMHO.

Well we obviously have a different view of what "top" means. I think of Nebraska as a blue blood like Michigan, Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, USC, Texas, Notre Dame and Oklahoma. In that context, Held is not "top paid" in my view because any one of them could offer him a lot more money if they choose.

In my view, if you're not in the top ten then you're not top paid. That's how I simplify it.

It's not exclusively what he's paid to do at NU, it's also paid to keep doing it at NU and not somewhere else. With the recognition he's receiving as an excellent recruiter, others will come calling with opportunities to advance his career. In some cases, the best management approach is to make people happier (raises, bonuses, etc.) and increase the chances of retention for high-performing employees before they realize they could (or have the opportunity to) be happy somewhere else.

If we have success similar to our recruiting improvements indicate, even after Held leaves (hoping it’s down the road a ways), recruiting to Nebraska will be easier as the program will be in a better place.

Held could be our OC by this time next year. If we make a huge jump and go 10-2 or 11-1 with a top 5 Offense in the country Walters will have all sorts of group of 5 and smaller power 5 suitors. Which means Held can move up to the OC job which would more than double his pay. I think everything will work out.
