We have to schedule an elite team each year to understand the speed of those kind of games. It gets your team prepped for the conference schedule as well as when March happens. We have enough dawgs in the fight that we can hang with Gonzaga now, coming off a season where we beat the top 8 teams in the B1G once. Pikiell knows what he's doing, we are ready to step up the non conference schedule.

The counter point is the team may need some time to figure out how to play without Geo and Ron

That is what those November MTE opponents at home are for. We have 6 players that have 2 years together, Reiber, Mag, Palmquist, Cliff 2 years, Paul and Caleb 3 years, Hyatt and Miller 1 year, add Spencer, Simpson and Woolfork to the mix. Pike will figure it out by the time it is played in late November or December.

Flying 6 hours across the country for a game we're going to lose with no benefit of a return trip is close to the worst game I could imagine scheduling.
It’s not my first choice either but there is upside. Really boosts the overall non-conference metrics in terms of SOS without the addition of multiple losable games. Also - it’s not a zero chance of winning. There are always early season head scratchers. Win that game and you put yourself in great shape.

As long as you don’t lose by 20 or more it’s not the worlds worst thing. If you happen to somehow win a road game against Gonzaga, you are essentially a lock to be in the mix barring a complete season meltdown.
