Also hearing they're taking in many more out of staters- the number is too large for me to accept- almost 50%?

Aren't we usually complaining about NJ graduates not choosing Rutgers, to go out of state instead? And how out of state students mean more revenue to the University, and the OOS students are top tier?

We are at the bottom two of the big ten for out of state % of students. Massive revenue opportunity to up that number and it would also help RUs brand nationwide id imagine.

The percentage of out of state and international students in the incoming class in Fall, 2024 was 25%, not 50%. That’s for New Brunswick. Camden and Newark percentages are lower.
I'm hearing numbers for 2025 not 2024-- like I said I can't accept the numbers I'm hearing for out of states bit t's way more than 2024

Ok that would make more sense because the 2024 #s are published and quite a bit different when I looked it up earlier (60 something acceptance rate, and out of state was like 10%)

I most definitely would not have gotten in to Rutgers today instead of back in the early 2000s. I would've ended up at Rowan and hopefully transferred into Rutgers after a year or 2.

I read 35% as well, but didn't know if that included Newark and Camden. Let's not forget that in addition to the common app, our US News ranking rose two years ago, making Rutgers more appealing to the kids who are snobs about that. Also, the Big Ten added the four west coast schools, so there is higher brand recognition with USC and and UCLA on our schedules.

I work in HE and the cooperation between B1G schools is a very real thing. They consult with their peers at other B1G institutions before big purchases and I mean well before. Not a courtesy call from purchasing at the 11th hour. We don’t see that with any other conference. To be fair, we don’t closely with Ivy League schools so they may also have a similar conference culture.

Point being, I can see the shift in out of state enrollment being at least partly based on conversations with other Leadership at other B1G schools on the Enrollment side of the house.

Yep. There's a a dynamic symbiosis between high-profile athletics programs and out-of-state applications. That's partly why the subsidy to athletics continues, because the money flows in the opposite direction and is likely tied non-linearly to athletics' successes.

There's a reason why a lot of folks look at the B1G as the Public Ivy League, that also happens to play major college sports. Rutgers has been in the B1G for a decade now and those kids who are applying to colleges have grown up basically only knowing Rutgers as a B1G school.

Not following. Only 12% out of state. A lot of Jersey kids are getting in. RU is just getting better students from NJ.
Yeah. The lower end NJ RU kids that would've gotten in about a decade or so ago are getting waitlisted or outright denied and ending up at schools like Rowan, TCNJ or NJIT.

My daughter is waiting to hear from RU. It’s her #1 choice but she hasn’t heard back yet. Decisions should be out soon.

RU brand is solid nationwide. The problem is that it’s a small state *and kids want to go away for college.
+1

While ABR is a very real thing, the geography part of equation (or explanation when you ask someone the “why?” question) has something to do with it. Always has, always will.

* Because, collectively, they can. Small state but a wealthy one. And with that you get options.

perhaps you can shed some real insight into why she choose Rutgers vs. all these assumptions and well wishing.

multiple reasons. We are from NJ and she wants to live on campus but she doesn’t want to travel too far from home. Her older sister is currently a sophomore at RU and doing well academically and socially. We have also discussed finances and in state costs are around $33k-$35k compared to traveling out of state for a minimum $55k. If she is at Ru she can graduate without taking on debt.

I wish our son had gone to RU out of HS, but he wanted to go to school in NYC and went to the New School; he ended up liking being in NYC, but didn't love the school so he transferred to RU, which obviously cost us a lot less. He got a degree in history and then his masters in information/data science (RU's program is top 5 in that) and is doing very well at a data-driven startup in his first 3.5 years in the real world, with 2 promotions already. He loved his time at RU.

Applications up all over.

"The number of first-year applicants this cycle is up 5 percent over January of last year, according to a new report from Common App, and overall applications rose 7 percent.

The growth was buoyed by a sharp uptick in underrepresented students: Latino applicants increased 13 percent, Black applicants by 12 percent and first-generation applicants by 14 percent. Asian applicants rose by 7 percent, while the number of white applicants didn’t change."

New Brunswick is far more appealing than it was when I went to school. The housing stocks on College Avenue, Busch, and Livingston have significantly improved in recent years. Tillet (Toilet) used to be a trash dining hall. Now it’s one of the best.

It is all a numbers game. Colleges try to encourage as many people to apply as possible so they can say they are being more selective. If Rutgers can admit only 20000 students, then that number will be a smaller percentage if 60000 or 80000 people apply than if only 40000 apply. And Rutgers has been very aggressive in getting kids to apply for the past two years. The more people apply, the lower the percentage of admissions, assuming a fixed number of how many you can admit.

In addition to the common app and B1G Membership, footballs modest improvement also contributed to the application increase.
Source? Or are you just making **** up again?

And are you really going to say Tillet is now one of the best dining halls? How possibly could you know this?
