Does Rutgers have any sort of a connection to them. They are the next up and coming basketball power. They have Trey Patterson who’s the number 1 freshman in the country and have a few more top guys coming. It would be nice to get them to go from prep to Ru!!

Haven't been connected for decades, late 50s-early 60s. Worth noting that the "Queens College Grammar School" stayed open while Queens College was closed in the early 1800s for financial reasons.

Also worth noting that William Leggett, who many of you know was the Rutgers captain in the first football game, was on the Rutgers Prep faculty at the time, and many Prep grads were on the team. So back when we were a small, private school and there was a connection to the prep school, many students did go from one to the other. (And Prep had female graduates about 80 years before the college did.)

And, of course, Prep also celebrated its 250th anniversary last year.

Friends / I used to break into their gym in the mid- late evenings for pick up games.
Maybe they're still pissed.

PS RU Prep: Todd Milligan in the late 70's.

Interned under MK in their athletic department. Worked with their coaches and phys ed program. Very good school. Enjoyable atmosphere. Great people. My time there led me to switch to teaching and coaching for a while.

Hasn’t been a physical connection in years since it was on campus (College Ave / Somerset St) when it was established.

Rutgers Prep's girls team is coached by Mary Coyle Klinger and they were the #1 team in the state last March until they lost to Franklin Twp. in the finals of the Tournament of Champions. Mary was our point guard when the RU women won the AIAW National Championship I think in the late 70's or early 80's. Steve Pikiell's daughter played on the team last year and she is at Northwestern now and made the team as a walk on and was awarded a scholarship. By the way I think about 7 years ago or so there was a very tall girl who attended many of our RU games who was supposedly a freshman player at Rutgers Prep. I think she was about 7 foot tall. Everyone thought she would come to RU. Does anyone know what ever happened to her?

Klinger and Kristen Somogyi run a very successful AAU program out of Rutgers Prep. their clinics are second to none if any of you have a daughter at travel level.

6-11 Bubbles Anderson - she went to Pitt. She was listed on the 2015-16 roster as a redshirt junior and doesn't appear on the 16-17 roster. Don't think she played much

Dinky Proctor in late 1970s.

I saw Dinky and Rutgers Prep play NYC's Ben Franklin at the RAC prior to an RU game in the late 70's. The Ben Franklin team was stacked, Gary Springer, Richie Adams and Kenny Hutchinson.

We at RPS just celebrated our "Independence Day" which celebrated our separation from Rutgers University a while back, so there is no official connection between the schools any longer. We send a lot of our kids to Rutgers but rarely our best and brightest. A lot of kids here just want to get out of the state. We're like a feeder school to NYU, Boston U, Northeastern, and a slew of regional schools big and small. Despite my best efforts kids still go to Penn State from even though I disavow them after I learn this. But once again, kids here generally want to leave the state especially when they have options.

I say this because I am doubtful that we'll have a great shot with kids like Trey. The good news is that Trey had a chance to go anywhere for high school but chose to stay here. A couple of kids that left for St. Joe's (Metuchen) came back to play high school ball here too. Maybe there is a sort of local loyalty brewing but we'll see. These kids also aren't really full of themselves either and the support system here is very good. We don't take it easy on these kids academically so if they end up with decent grades trust me they earned them.

2nd Thought: we need to reach out / form a permanent bond (pipeline) between Da U / Da Prep.

How much more embarrassing would it be for a 4-5 star whiz to select Sarah, Duke etc. This door should be opened to us and virtually closed to the rest of the world.

Trey will have his pick of schools near and far. I coached him in 6th and 7th grade with SportsU. Great family. Mom is a shu grad and dad is a Bonnies grad. Kid is coachable and talent level is tremendous for a freshman

Ortelli had them headed in the right direction a few years back, but then they faded away again.

To bad about the Independence Day thing, I get it. I tough enough recruiting in state as it is.

Yes, I was on that Rutgers Prep team..We actually led after three quarters, but lost by about 15. Springer was great..I think he went to Iona?..Dink, of course was on Jimmy V's Championship team at NC St..

I read somewhere that when RP split off from the university, RU kept the RP share of the endowment funds and that money was used to build the Barn. Interesting if true.

Yup- Springer went to Iona and Adams to UNLV. Not sure where Hutchinson went.

Hutchinson went to Arkansas. Unfortunately things did not work out for him. Adams is an awful story. Left UNLV. Lots of personal problems. Another tragic life situation.

Springer's knees were shot early in life. Impacted his collegiate career in a substantial way.

The year Hutchinson was a senior at Franklin, he was regarded as part of the Big Three NYC HS guards. Pearl Washington, Kenny Smith and Hutchinson. The guy who did not have as much attention was Mark Jackson. He went on to a very strong career at St. John's and the NBA.
