Playing UMass, who lost all 12 of their games last year and had the worst offense and defense in FBS.

currently 21-7 UMass

Rutgers has a new defensive coordinator that came from South Dakota. The defense really looks horrible at the moment. UMass scored on their first three possessions.

Half-time UMass 24 Rutgers 7.

Rutgers still has a chance if they adjust. Their defensive line is being controlled but not by much.

Getting rid of Bajakian really does wonders for an offense. They were the worst in FBS last year with him as OC

Rutgers looks like a team that is completely unprepared & would rather be anywhere else tonight. Schiano looks like he would rather be having drinks at his Country Club. Rutgers may still pull this out but what an embarrassing first half.

4th and inches and Rutgers tries a sneak and couldn’t move the UMass defense. Rutgers makes the mistake of doing the exact same play they did to make a fourth down earlier in the drive. This time UMass put bigger bodies on the line and were prepared. Rutgers needed to give them a different look or run a different play but they thought their line could move around the UMass line.

Rutgers now down 30-7. Their defense is unable to stop UMASS, primarily because they are slow and don't tackle well.

UMass 37 Rutgers 21. Although the defense looked bad early, it was the Rutgers offense that loss this game. Too many interceptions and couldn’t put consistent drives together. Hopefully, Rutgers stays this bad until we meet them. Shiano may be fired by then.

I wonder if Schiano is just not in it for the new CFB. He came back to Rut in 2020 which was the beginning of the end of CFB as he knew it before. Or maybe it’s just that Rutgers has no money.

I don't invest too much in Week #1 performances but Rutgers+Schiano post-2020 is a pretty fascinating case study in total and consistent underperformance. On your worst day you're still a relatively wealthy Big Ten program, and on our worst day we can still take some comfort knowing that as long as Rutgers and Purdue are in the conference, we'll never be "the worst."

I don't mean to bring up unpleasant memories, but in 2006 New Hampshire beat Northwestern soundly 34-17 -- so clearly it can happen. That year, New Hampshire had a good team and they put up lots of points. Oh... and by the way, Chip Kelly was their OC that year, and the very next year (2007), he was hired away by Oregon.

So you never can tell when the unknown coach your going up against turns out to be a future legend in the making.

Just saying...

And back in 1955, Miami of Ohio came into Evanston and beat the Cats 25-14 in their opener. The next year, Northwestern hired their young coach, Ara Parseghian! Anything can happen.
