Rutgers and the ACC ?

but even after joining the B1G, some RU fans here felt the ACC was a better fit.
If they had thir way RU would be ACC and all of us would be wondering if the ACC would wind up like the Big East Conference and have to find a new home..

If we were in the ACC we would have had many more enjoyable seasons on the field against more natural rivals. It was a reasonable position. Fast forward ten years and going to the B1G is obviously the far better outcome.

In the mid 80’s over chicken patties and cheese fries in Brower I said the same thing.

Never thinking the Big Ten (it really was just 10 then pre-State Penn) was an option.

It was a terrible position, and recent events merely shined light on just how deep that well of terrible runs.

I remember when Pitt and Syracuse joined the ACC, there was speculation locally that Rutgers and UConn would be the next ones to join and make the ACC a “super conference.” This was when Texas and co. were in talks with the Pac-10 and 16-team conferences were all the rage.

Personally, I was pulling for it because both are great schools and it would’ve given the ACC a true northeast flair. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be.

The ACC knew about the pending Big Ten RU invitation to join the conference, however when Nebraska (suddenly became available) it took the proposed RU invite. That's when Schiano stated, I was concerned of the possibility that RU might get left behind, which caused him to have valid concerns. Further, the ACC saw an opening and asked RU to submit an application to the ACC wink/wink. RU notified the Big Ten of the happening and that accelerated the Big Ten to hasten further expansion. An ACC application was never submitted by RU as the BIG took quick action, even Jim Delany spoke publicly about the ACC move for RU. It was common knowledge here in North Carolina that RU was contacted for entrance in the ACC. The rest is history. That's my true story and I'm sticking to it!

We’ll never know what was going on behind the scenes. At face value, it was an odd decision unless they were aiming to stick with a basketball focus, which literally would’ve made no sense considering that did the BE no good.

RU football at that point wasn’t materially inferior to the teams selected for the ACC and the location blew out all the others.

Lot of people are missing the point, the B1G is now one of two premier P5 conferences only because of Rutgers. Without the addition of Rutgers none of this happens for the B1G, including the upcoming big money media contract which entices USC and UCLA to join. If we had joined the ACC then they would have access to the NYC/NJ media market and they would be one of the two premier conferences. It is all about Rutgers, we are the King makers, never forget that fact.

Only the B1G had the means to monetize the market that RU brought (and it only worked because of the combined nucleus of RU fans and existing B1G school fans located in the NY market).

Yes, the B1G’s presence in the #1 market would not have happened without RU, and that is part of why the media rights are exploding now. But no other conference could have leveraged what we had to get here.

Rutgers and the B1G. perfect together.

I don't think we ever had an offer. People keep saying we had no bargaining position with the B1G. If we were that coveted and had an ACC offer in our back pocket, we really couldn't negotiate that into a better deal than, the worst in B1G expansion history?

Yes and no. The ACC was controlled by ESPN. They didn't have their own network and therefore could not make any demands or have any leverage against them. Delany, the genius that he was, started the BTN in cohoots with FOX and had a lot of say in any media rights deals. Yes, Rutgers allowed cable carriers entry into NY/NJ which for unkown reasons did not resonate with ESPN. Whoever missed out on that thought process should have been immediately fired. Swofford also gave away all the ACC's leverage to ESPN, maybe the worst decision in college finance history.
For those who doubt that we had put off the ACC, my sources were directly from those close to Pernetti. Had the ACC offered earlier in the process, things may have turned out differently. In fact, as it was told to me, Delany coveted Rutgers in the B1G for a while and RU was seriously considered in 2011, but Nebraska came calling and we were squeezed out.
