I was in Lexington last weekend and we went downtown to see what was going on inside Rupp. The huge cherrypicker machines are inside and the red ductwork is being painted BLUE - Finally! Sorry, no pictures as security wouldn't allow it.

Spoke to one of the guys that is a 'blue coat' during football and basketball games and he said the video screens in the corners will also be removed giving the people sitting in the corners unobstructed views again. All video will be on the new center scoreboard. They also are building press rows on the front of the upper deck - both sides. If you know where the TV crews film the games that has been extended the length of the front edge of the upper deck.

I assume the steel superstructure in each corner will also be painted blue.

I would love to see pics of the dust in the air, as they removed it from the ductwork, before the painting began.

Bout damn time. We are the needle. The gold standard. So all of those associated with Kentucky basketball should enjoy the best. Since a new arena was stalled make Rupp the best Rupp it can be. Now all we need are for the blue hairs to stand up and cheer!

Didn't they just replace those screens in the corners? Why take them down, seems like a waste of money.

That's what I was thinking. They just upgraded them to wide-screen models within the last year. Who's view are those screens blocking? I don't get it.

Unless there are people trying to watch the games from inside the triangle structures in the corners then the screens do not obstruct anyone's view. They were probably just taking them down temporarily in order to paint the corners blue. And there was, of course, already a press row along the upper deck behind the benches.

Excited about all of the updates though...long overdue. Now, how about new benches with backs for the upper deck?!

Aaaaah, the multi colored seats, what the "beeeep" were they thinking. LOL!

I was 14 when Rupp was completed. I'm pretty sure the first time I was in there was a game during Larry Johnson's senior year. I remember them playing "Rubberband Man" by the Spinners during warm ups and thinking how hip and cool that was. Big Bertha was cranking it, baby!

First concert I attended was ELO in 1978 on their "Out of the Blue" tour. Had the spaceship stage, green laser lights hitting the ceiling, and,...........that's all I remember! :sunglasses:

Hope you're right as I was surprised to hear they were getting rid of them too. They just put those updated screens in during the season last year and they don't come cheap so I would think it would be a huge waste of money to get rid of them now. Be pretty awesome to have those in the corners along with the 4 sided scoreboard over the court. Bet there isn't another arena with that kind of thing going on.

No more paint peeling from the ceiling? The neighbors across the street will have to paint their ceilings now.

I was so pissed when the renovations got scrapped. The pictures of the plans looked absolutely AMAZING. We definitely would've had the best arena in all of college basketball.

Those multi-colored seats that were originally installed in Rupp were part of the "branding" of Lexington Center. The whole complex, including the shops, food court, etc. were intended to paint a colorful, hip picture of the facility with all elements being tied together via the colorful motif. It seems dated now but, the marketing theory is sound. Just not appropriate for the Home of UK Basketball. Go Blue or go home. LOL!

Well, and it was presumptuous to think, during a bizarre era like the 70s, that a color scheme/design motif/general aesthetic established then would stand the test of time - when is the last time you've seen a room in different tones of tan/light brown?

That decade derailed common sense in design in such a way that it didn't start recovering until the late 90s. It even managed to dramatically alter the modern men's suit, which hasn't happened much in the last century.

I suppose he meant the folks sitting near these screens will be able to see the entire arena again. The existing screens don't block the view of the court but appears they do block certain views.
