Probably so on the big lead. I'll give them this. Good applause to pump up individuals. Made some nose for Skal, Matthews,Isaac, and Briscoe. Good on them for that.
Rupp is not really known for being a loud arena...only for big games tbh. It's intimidating because they fill every seat every game unlike other schools. A lot of the loudness has to do with the older crowd being In the lower bowl.
I'll take 12K going nuts ALL game over 20K + on life support all day long. I asked a simple question earlier in another thread and received defensive and now spin type answers to my question about the lack of enthusiasm during your games. Good team/great environment vs. Great team (from a historical standpoint)/Nursing home atmosphere? Tough choice.
If you see most NCAA games and the teams that I have the loud noise most of the game is the arenas that have most of the student body near the floor. North Carolina is another arena that gets quiet because of the configuration and alot of the older fans are near the floor. Duke, Kansas, Notre Dame today they have all of their student body near the floor and they are constantly up and cheering loud for the home team. At Rupp Arena you have the one endzone filled up with the Student body and the rest of the bottom arena is the Older fans and they very seldom are up unless we are on a huge run like at the start of the game today. Also, remember Coach White at UF took quite a few timeouts in first 10 minutes of the 1st half today and that takes the crowd out of the game. We also had leads from 22-26 points during the 1st half and that isn't going to get a Rupp Arena crowd up most of the game if we are leading by double digits most of the game and from the 17 or 18 minute mark of the game we were up double digits most 1st half and all of 2nd half.
I think you guys are missing the point. It's sustained noise and enthusiasm that separates the top venues from the rest. Not being the loudest when you hit a 3 or block a shot.

For better or worse, UK fans are selective with regard to enthusiasm in Rupp. For big rivalries, nationally televised games against major opponents, or when otherwise motivated, there's no better environment, period. Other times, not so much. There was a bit of a hangover after the Tennessee game; add that to the perception that Florida is yesterday's news (post-Donovan), and you have the crowd you saw today.
If you harbor any doubts about the fierce allegiance and boisterous fanaticism of our fanbase, get your Nole *** to Nashville, or Atlanta, or anywhere else they have the SEC tourney for a good lesson on the Big Blue Nation.

It's pretty simple really, the arena is so damn big a lot of the acoustics are absorbed compared to a cracker box where
the sound has nowhere to go.

This is correct. I have been to games where people talked about how quiet it was and it was not quiet where I was. It is the acoustics. And some old ladies as well.
You have hit on a very cogent point, Nole. Rupp Arena is notoriously a low key group because of the seating arrangements. The best atmosphere for UK fans, imo, is the SEC tournament where you have folks there who save their money and only get to see their Cats during that time, so they are loud. I enjoy the atmosphere at the SEC tourney much more than a game at Rupp because the fans are really into it at the tourney.
My takeaway from this is that UK fans are really tournament fans. The regular season is like the overture to the main work. Kentucky fans live for the big stage and the big games.

The TV mics are in the lower level - probably a good thing they aren't in the uppers because the language often exceeds PG-13.
I was at game, crowd was fine. Cheered big when Skal got rebounds, when Humphries did anything, when Murray hits 3's, etc. etc. etc. Also excited for the firecrackers at half time [laughing]

It was loud where I was at for the most part I don't think the sound comes through on tv as good because the place is so huge.
In the other thread, S&C summed it up well when he (basically) said what you see/hear on TV wasn't an accurate way to assess the crowd's enthusiasm in Rupp. I guess that sounds like "spin" to you, but it's true IMHO.
As for the rest, plenty of wild and crazy regular fans (non-season ticket holders) wait for the chance to grab some seats in the SEC and NCAA tournaments... those are the thousands of fans that don't spend the outrageous $ on the regular season lower arena seats. They save their cash, their vacation days, and their voices for those events.
Who was at GameDay in 2010? It was insane at 10 in the morning.
I can vouch that Rupp is louder in there than on TV. And if push comes to shove and the team NEEDs us, it's louder than any arena in America.

You haven't heard , they don't mic every fan up . That's why you don't hear it on tv . Nevermind that Vitale mentioned how quit it was during his last game at Rupp , he needs to learn that the mics are down by the floor and that's why he couldn't hear anybody in Rupp as well .
I freely admit that this is a silly way to watch a game, but a lot of times I'm "coaching" from the couch or stands so I'm not going crazy for every made basket. I think a lot of UK fans are that way. With UK football I'm not watching guys off the ball or paying close attention to formations, etc. I'm just cheering when something positive happens.
A few years ago an older guy with a thick mountain accent called into the pre game show and was suggesting Cal try a zone press instead of man to man and breaking down the intricacies of why. Part of what makes BBN unique is our obsession with basketball, but that also means most of us aren't passively watching and just enjoying every score.

I was there as well and the crowd was great. It's funny, the people who always complain about the Rupp crowds are almost NEVER at the games themselves.
Also, how much more of a home court advantage do you think UK needs? They are virtually unbeatable at home under Cal. I mean seriously, are some of you so Duke envious that you won't be satisfied with anything short of a bunch of idiots jumping up and down all game?
