I can see Don's ego pushing him to the NFL at some point, but...

he's not dumb enough to go to Washington.

So he goes to Washington. Fails and leaves after the 2021 season. Comes back to State after we fire Moorhead and leads us to the national championship games we would have been contending for had he stayed at State.

Okay, that last sentence was **.

This is his typical MO where he’s fishing for contract extensions and raises.

I don't know if Don is entertaining the Redskins' job but I don't think Don likes expectations.

Just like he did at MSU by getting out the year before expectations, I could see him doing something similar at Florida. Once they expect him to win, he's gone.

I think he likes building much more than sustaining & dealing with expectations

He has always had an NFL itch- even mentioned in a press conference while he was at State that he aspired to one day coach in the NFL.

Dom Merlot is not an NFL level coach. He doesn't have the play-calling acumen. He is a good fundamental coach who specializes in quarterbacks. He's a great talent developer, but he's a micromanager, which is what will hold him back eventually. NFL is a whole other animal. While he would not have to recruit anymore, he's just not an NFL fit.

I said a long time ago that Mullen would try the NFL at some point.
But this isn't it. This is typical Dan.

Yup. He's not leaving Florida until he wins a national championship or until he has at lease one season that is worse than the one before.

Not sure if he'll be a good fit for the NFL or not. On the one hand, recruiting won't hold him back. On the other, I'm not sure how he will handle being on the same professional level as his players. Not exactly the same thing, but jsut like he hates kissing *** for recruiting, I'm not sure if he'll like having to deal with players that are closer to equals to him on a professional level. And that ignores the x's and o's and whether his strengths really translate to the NFL.

If this was remotely true, he never would have taken the UF job in the first place. The expectations started there before he even showed up for his first press conference.

Watch him come out and say "I will never leave Florida. I am not interested in an NFL job". Something he would never do at State.

I actually think Dan as a play caller would be a good NFL coach. He adjusts his play calling to where he is not using the QB as a battering ram. Look at the offense in 2015... it was very NFL like. Dak even said so when he said the play calling and reads were very similar once he got to the pros.

If you have professional talent

you can imploy a pro offense. I have absolutely no doubt that DM is capable of doing so.

He will likely be a better Pro coach than college. No recruiting required. He is an excellent talent evaluator.

He is just cold enough to make it.

Not sure I’m tracking. If anything Dan did himself a disservice by jumping to Florida when he did. If he sticks around another year we are 10-2 or 11-1 and he looks that much better.

I’ve always though he thought he’d ride off into the sunset after Dak and then when it didn’t work out he jumped prematurely at the next decent offer.

Mullen wants the Cowboys job once the inevitable happens to Jason Garrett. Reunite with Dak. The Skins story being their hated rival is a signal to Jerruh.

I think that's exactly what happened. He held out for the perfect job in 2014, figuring he'd get a good one after 2015. When he didn't, he decided he wasn't going to make that mistake again. Worked out for him that he got the Florida job, but he was gone for a dumpster fire at Tennessee if that didn't come through.

Just like others have posted, he doesn't like recruiting and NFL would take care of that part of the job for him. However, I'm not sure if running the QB read 85% of the time will work in the NFL, but I may be wrong (I'm not). Also, don't think any NFL team will give him time off to run marathons or go watch his son's golf tournaments. On a positive note, he may be more successful in the NFL on his fake punt attempts (he won't).

Of course Dan would take the Washington job if offered, that's not even a question. And if Kingsbury can get a NFL job in today's day, you can bet Mullen could too. With that said, I don't think Snyder would be the guy to hire Mullen because it would be too similar to the failed Spurier hire all Washington fans remember. It would have to be Atlanta, Minnesota or one of the other ones that will be open at some point.

Sorry, but Florida is a lot more than just a “decent” offer. They are a Top 7-8 job at worst, and possibly a Top 5 job. One of only 6 programs with multiple NC’s in the past 20 years. It was a no-brainer decision for him to take it, very unlikely that he or any other coach would ever get a better offer at the college level. Check out the other programs below and the company that job is in:

Teams with multiple NC’s in the past 20 years:

Alabama (5)
Clemson (2)
Ohio State (2)
Florida (2)
Florida State (2)
LSU (2)

Yeah, Dan knew there was more money to extort from Florida, especially with his insider AD writing blank checks. If he loses to Orgeron though it's basically going to show he's still just the same coach that can string a few wins together, but not win the big one.

I think this is the closest to reality (at least in Dons mind). Plus Dallas/Ft Worth has a lot of targets!

I think it’s an adequate time to reflect on the fact that Kliff 17ing Kingsbury got an NFL job. Mullen is a way better fit than he is.
