If you're inbounding the ball after you've already passed half court, why are you allowed to throw it in over the half court line without it being over and back?

heres what i never understood

why do teams get punished for getting fouled? its not a reward to have to hit 2 shots to get what you could have had anyways...its also not a reward to have to hit a 1 and 1 with no opportunity for a 3

I always felt like the team getting fouled should have the option of shooting free throws or taking the ball out of bounds.

Wow never thought of this, interesting idea. Would completely kill those slugfest free throw contests that make the last minute take as long as the whole half.

I don’t know but I bet it’s to keep teams honest instead of spreading the entire floor to stall a game with a lead like the four corners did. If you allow it then teams would do it.

Would put another layer of strategy into the game. Foul SGA, we shot the FTs. Foul PJ, we take the inbounds and a new shot clock.

If you get the ball out at the side, and can't throw the ball behind the half court, it could practically be impossible to get ball in. The point of rules is to have a flow to play the game. Not just rules for the sake of rules. Be sort of like not letting you get to dribble again just because you passed the ball to a teammate and got it back.

Why would you ever shoot FTs up under 4 minutes? This would just help teams run the clock taking the fun out of basketball

We still have the majority of coaches that won't foul a team late in the game to prevent said team from hitting a 3 to tie. Most just say "let's gamble" and hope they don't hit the 3, rather than foul and put them on the line to force them to either hit both FTs and get the ball back, or miss one on purpose and try to rebound and win.

So even if they gave teams the option to pick their "reward", how many coaches would do it?

I hate the kicked ball rule. If the ball hits a defender's leg due to a bad pass (and the defender didn't try to kick the ball) the team on defense shouldn't be punished. Just play on, let there be a loose ball scramble. If it goes out of bounds then give the ball to whoever didn't touch it last.

One that drives me crazy is when the offensive player attempts a jump shot and makes a completely unnatural shooting motion initiating contact and they call a foul on the D player.

not supposed to be a penalty if its an unintentional hit.. only a kick

Don’t think a ball that hits a defenders leg as you just described results in a dead ball. A player has to physically lift their leg trying to hit the ball with their foot or leg to result in a kicked ball.
