I missed Basch and Willie, but apparently they discussed rule changes?

I posted the BaschAMania you referenced earlier today in the Social Media thread.

The rule changes that were discussed were related to recruiting. Specifically, a change in when a prospect can be contacted, when they can take official visits, etc.

It was a legislative item for the D1 wrestling committee in March:

Men’s Wrestling – First Opportunity for Recruiting Activities.

(1) Recommendation. The NCAA Division I Men’s Wrestling Oversight Committee introduced legislation to establish the starting date for recruiting activities for high school prospective student-athletes as follows:

§ April 1 of prospective student-athlete’s junior year of high school: Correspondence and telephone calls, § June 15 after prospective student-athlete’s junior year of high school: Evaluations and contacts.

§ Aug. 15 of prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school: Official and unofficial visits.

The oversight committee requests the Division I Cabinet adopt the proposed changes as expedited legislation at its April 2026 meeting.

(2) Effective Date. Immediate; applicable for student-athletes initially enrolling full time in a collegiate institution on or after Aug. 1, 2028.

(3) Rationale. By establishing a later recruiting start date, the proposal addresses a prospective student-athlete’s continued physical growth and development, which allows prospective student-athletes and coaches to make better-informed decisions about collegiate attendance. Additionally, the tiered approach to permissible recruiting activities allows coaches and prospective student-athletes to establish a relationship and mutual interest via communication prior to in-person meetings.

(4) Estimated budget impact. Varies by institution based on recruiting practices.

(5) Student-athlete impact. The proposal promotes student-athlete well-being by accounting for a prospective student-athlete’s continued development, which encourages better-informed decisions about collegiate attendance.

I can't find anywhere that it passed. But, I have no reason to think it didn't (or won't eventually) and will keep looking.

I haven't searched on whether or not they passed. The BaschAMania segment was based on a tweet from Tony Ramos indicating the rules had passed. Here's the tweet:

Long time lurker, never posted. Just listened to Zach Seyko drone on about the new 5 years to wrestle 4 rule change. I may be missing something, but taking PJ duke as an example, what's the difference between sitting out next year as one of the 5 years or taking a red shirt under the old rules? Either way, he can wrestle 4 and sit one.

Its 5 for 5 (not 4). Sitting out a year would spend one of 5 years of eligibility. If PJ sits out this year and gets injured the year after, he then would only have 2 years left with no medical waivers any more. I think this incentivizes PJ not to sit out next season and most others to not take a redshirt in the future.

Edit: it wouldnt be a redshirt. They would just be sitting out losing 1 year of eligibility.

Also, welcome to posting on the board!

Has to go threw everyone wanting another year challenging it. I don’t see it being adopted for at least 2 more years.

I’m curious if Bo Bassett gets 4 or 5 years because I do believe he turns 20 prior to the start of his 1st semester at VT. Does anybody know what happens in cases like his?

NVM. He turns 20 8/25 and VT Fall semester begins 8/24.

I think this os going to change a lot for psu and coaching staff in regards to managing a lineup. Switching the rules changes everything and losing a redshirt will effect decisions for sure. Not sure this helps Cael at all
It definitely hurts the program. There will be some guys heading to the Portal if this rule sticks.

I’d like you can’t be 24 or older to compete in college. The recruiting thing is going back to my hay day in the 80’s! Dick Anderson didn’t come to my school until my junior yaear to see me and 2 others. Scotty B and big boy Gerry LaM

Hopefully the NCAA will follow their own precedent with other changes… start it with the freshman class starting the season that starts after the effective date… anyone older grandfathered in under the previous rule.

Traditional HS graduation age, 4 year Military stint, athletic completion participant through sophomore season?
