Salvy Perez may miss the year. I was already preparing myself for a rough year , from the Royals. Damn.

Best catcher in baseball. That dude was the lifeblood of that team. He is more of a manager than Ned Yost is. I am a HUGE Perez fan. Its a very sad day.

My Red Sox have an extra catcher to trade. I have read there are talks. What do the Royals have in their farm system?

I read they were talking to FA catcher Martin Maldonado. They're surely not going to trade anything of value for a catcher for this season. They'll probably give Cam Gallagher the shot to start for awhile.

A couple of thoughts...in theory, Perez could DH all year, assuming the injury won't prevent him from swinging the bat. Ohtani did that last year after tearing his UCL.

But if he does have surgery and miss the year, it has little impact on this season - one in which the goal is to see what young players can handle a major league season. Either scenario saves a year of wear and tear on Perez, who in theory would be healthier when the Royals think they'll be closer to contending (2020 - 2021 ish).

The Royals actually are high on their young catching prospects (Gallagher is not considered a top prospect, just a 'serviceable' option) - but most of them are really, really young. I can see them sign a veteran off of the scrap heap until Viloria is ready to play 3-4 days a week.

Royals farm sucks. Singer is a good prospect and Khalil Lee (?) is a decent prospect, but that's about it.
This is just wrong. It's not a system that will help this year but it's getting loaded with very young prospects. Pretty highly regarded for 21 and younger prospects (top 10 I think). We have the 2nd pick this April, could be a top 10 system a year from now. Melendez, Kowar, Lynch, Lovelady, Matias, Lopez, Pratto... all good prospects. But whatever, defense first catchers are a dime a dozen and the Royals aren't gonna trade anybody for one.

I just don't see it. Not a fan of their system right now. They need to hit on that number two pick.

Most predictors had the Royals winning 70+ games not taking into account the loss of Salvy. If you're a Royals fan there are aspects of the game you enjoy that don't have anything to do with W's. And if you don't enjoy watching Salvy play you're not a fan of baseball at all. So yeah, a buzzkill.

And what did they have us winning last year? I’ve been going to games since 87, not much to be excited about this year.

Since '87 huh? I guess that accounts for you being a grouchy old man. If you're not excited for baseball you probably need viagra too. There's lots of young Royals that will be exciting to watch. If you're a fan of a small market team you're lame if you just jump on the bandwagon when they win. Losing is part of the deal.

That's a little harsh. Can't blame the guy for not being excited for another season of suckage. That doesn't mean he's a bandwagon fan and doesn't mean he doesn't enjoy other things about baseball season.

Still a lower end farm system, but they're getting better.

Not being excited for watching AAAA baseball doesn’t make someone lame. Royals could afford to spend another 20-35 million this year and at least compete a bit, not saying they need Harper or Machado investments but bringing in a more proven arm in the rotation, and 2 arms to the pen would make a huge difference IMO. Worst case you try to flip those investments for prospects mid year.

I have a strong dislike for the new MLB model of either you have a WS squad or you are tanking and being cheap under the guise of a rebuild.

PS, not even 40 yet, no viagra needed either.

Your criticism about payroll could be a blanket critique of 3/4s of Major League Baseball right now. All fans should be disgusted by the obvious collusion throughout the league. Teams without an obvious path to winning now are eating payroll and virtually conceding development.

There are dozens of veterans available who remain unsigned because teams aren't willing to sign a veteran .265 / 20 HR guy for 12 million when they can play a 23 year old for the league minimum. He may only hit .245 with minimal pop, but "we aren't going to win anyway, let's save money."

Its been a brutal reality across MLB.

Yeah, the MLB has got to change something. I'm in my own personal fan hell being a Mets fan. We've got cheap owners in a big market that spend like their in a small market. Worst owners in beisbol.

I can only speak for myself, but I'd rather the Royals sacrifice wins in order to let younger players get on the field. In 2011-2012, the Royals weren't going anywhere but it was fun to watch Hosmer, Moustakas, Cain, Salvy and others play every day. Jeff Francis and Bruce Chen were not exactly big draws for me.

I guess my point is that for a small market team especially, it is absolutely prudent to forgo paying some middling veteran player that is not part of the future 8 million when you have a prospect in your system that plays the same position.

Went to the Royals game today (Sunday). Down 7-0 to the Indians and came back to win big. Lots of fun for one day anyway.
