We aren’t betting real $!!!!! So who does Dean guard?

that’s why we aren’t seeing Dean and Cliff together.
I think Dean is better choice to guard the four—Cliff’s long-legedness detracts for the short, choppy steps needed to guard the perimeter. He either gets blown by or is a foul machine, many fouls for hand checking.

Have you seen Dean guard a 4?

If Dean Reiber is a 30% shooter from 3 I have a tough time trying to figure out how he helps playing with Cliff more than Cliff/Mag or Cliff/Hyatt or Cliff/Caleb.

He needs to be viewed as a capable 3 point shooter and not the guy that shot 60% on 12 attempts.

If Spencer and/or Simpson are guys that need to be on the court......

How do you not want to see Paul, Simpson, Spencer, Caleb and Cliff OR Paul, Spencer, Caleb, Mag/Hyatt, Cliff

You have 160 minutes
Paul 33 GIVEN
Caleb 33 GIVEN
Spencer 28 HOPEFUL

66 minutes left.....
Simpson
Miller
Mag
Hyatt
Chol

If Reiber plays minutes at the 4 I am very bearish about our team That means the 5 guys above cant absorb the 66 minutes.

Last year it was a bad sign when Hyatt and Jones and Agee couldnt absorb available minutes and we had to extend the minutes to our starters.

What if he shoots 35%+ on let’s say 40+ attempts this year? I think he’ll do both.

I preface this by writing that I like Dean. And I thought his improvement last season was worthy of praise. But TJD scored fairly easily against the kid. Dean simply was “just ok” at guarding B1G Centers last season which is actually why I see him playing some "4" next season. TJD, Dickinson, Edey, Key, etc. may be too strong for Dean in the post.

Dean may be better off guarding Race Thompson than TJD. Or Terrance Williams instead of Dickinson. Or as an example from last season Coleman Hawkins instead of Kofi. There aren't many B1G "4"'s like Ron Harper Jr. It's one of the reasons (imo) why RHj presented a matchup problem last season for our opponents.

Kids like Coleman Hawkins or Julian Green (MD), or Race Thompson (IU) or Diabate last season at UM (for example) are more in the mold of B1G "4"'s than RHj. And I think those are fine matchups for Dean.

Just my $0.02

To me, if he is viewed as an option at the 4, he needs to be a really good shooter.

I really hope Mag and Hyatt make this a non issue.

I don’t have numbers to back this up, but Cliff wasn’t the same player in half 2 than he was in half 1. I like Cliff playing 26-28 minutes and I think Dean makes an impact playing 12-14 minutes. He played really important minutes last year.

I'd flip the question. How are you getting 40 minutes out of this roster at the "4"? I'm not sure we can get 40 minutes from a Hyatt/Mag combination against Coleman Hawkins. Or Race Thompson. Heck, Minnesota looks like they will be playing a 6'10" kid at the "4". Julian Green/Donta Scott are two post players who look like they will be starting at Maryland as their 4/5. Both are 6'9" and strong.

RHj could guard those types of players on one end and was a matchup problem on the other side for them. Keegan Murray caused the same kind of matchup problem. Not sure the same is true for Hyatt/Mag. I think how we play that spot is the going to be very interesting. At first I thought McConnell would be interesting in that spot, but there is no way you take what may be the best wing defender in the country and play him against a post player. At least I wouldn't think so. Over half the teams in this league play a post player as the "4"

Let’s not act like it is either/or for Dean. He’s been with the program long enough that he can easily slide back and forth.

We really could use Simpson to be an immediate impact player. That type of athleticism is missing from the backcourt otherwise
Sounds like 6th man stuff to me... other team needing a rest.. speed kills.. catch em reaching.. send them to their bench with an extra foul

After the Jaden Jones frenzy last September and October I hope people will take this to heart.
There needs to be a new saying when guys get TOO hyped from watching a practice.
"Hey, did you hear Simpson runs like a cheetah and jumps like Jordan, defends like The Glove"

"come on man, let's not get all JJ over this guy"

If Dean has gained 7 pounds of mostly muscle from last year, he’ll be a beast. He had to work wayyy too hard defending 240+ pounders down low. His stroke from deep is pure. I bet Woolfolk gets some nice minutes in games because he’ll be strong defensively and be able to hold fort.

For sure he is getting about 12 mpg as our backup Center. The question is does he get 3-8 additional minutes with Cliff on the floor too.

Omoruyi hit 30 min or more in 19 of 32 games last year, and in 11 of the final 13. Over the back half of the season, he averaged 30.5 min/g. I'm pretty sure this season he'll be seeing 30-32 min a game, which would limit Reiber's time behind him to 8-10 min/g.

I think Reiber's play will earn him more time than that, and that we'll see Omoruyi/Reiber on the floor together for 5+ min/g fairly frequently throughout the season.

I agree with everything you said, with one caveat. Should Pike decide to run with a press 10 minutes or so a game (he flashed one last season with some success) - I think Dean will play the 4 spot for that - with Cliff protecting the rim should the opponent break through. Dean looked really solid in that particular role.

Another thing playing with all this, is a comment GREG made about the football team. He said one of the challenges as you build depth is
keeping everyone happy with playing time. So they don’t think portal.
Same applies here.

The 4 & 5 minutes per game question will likely be answered by the foul situation.

Even if you plan to play kids a certain amount of time, there are a lot of fouls to go around down low.
