Roster and Depth for 2015-2016

As guys announce for the Draft and recruiting heads toward the finish line, it's important to keep in mind that this year was an anomaly. Like in 2010, this year was essentially the collection of two separately recruited rosters.

Cal expected the twins and Willie to leave last spring. They didn't. Obviously that was a fantastic problem to have, but it was the driving necessity behind the innovation of the platoon idea. Cal had 10 guys who needed minutes, he had to do something.

Please do not mistake this year's roster for the standard needed going forward. Cal has said countless times that he only usually plays 6-7 guys, and that this year was the exception. Despite that, I sense a growing movement among posts on this board and other places online that the cupboard will somehow be bare next season. That isn't the case.

Things are likely to return to "normal," next season. A team with "only" 7-8 talented players does not mean we're weak, or down, or rebuilding, or heading to the NIT.

Our roster will have weaknesses. It will not be two-deep with NBA talent at each position, nor will it have someone at all five spots who is athletic, a great shooter, a great defender, a great passer, a lottery talent, a senior leader and a 4.0 student. Those rosters don't exist, and even the most talented collection of players in modern history this season did not actually "fit" as a balanced team with all the pieces needed for a championship.

Next season, no team will have all of those pieces either. Whoever wins the 2016 title will have flaws, just like Duke had no big man depth and played terrible defense this year. In the end, grab as much talent as you can, coach them as best you can, let the team grow, players grow, and each individual figure out what his role is on the team and how to be the best version of himself, and see where it takes you.

So far, those results have been fantastic. Sure, we "should have" won it all in 2010, 2014 and 2015. We should have won it all every year for the last century. But whether we do or don't cut down the nets in 2016, don't be so preoccupied with what you think we're lacking or where we struggle that you forget to enjoy what is sure to be another incredible season on this ridiculous trip we're on as fans.

We don't have to be perfect, we just have to be the best team for six games in March, and I'll bet when October rolls around that Cal will like his team--again.

Exactly OP. The only reason people are worried is because the last time we had a mass exodus, the NIT year followed. But they seem to forget that had more to do with external factors (Harrow's disappearing act, Noel inury, etc.) than the actual talent assembled. Also, the time we had a mass exodus before that (2010) led to better results the next season and I will guarantee that next year is closer to 2011 than 2013.

Say we don't get any more recruits (which won't happen), our roster would be:

Starters:
G Ulis
G Briscoe
F Poythress
F Lee
C Skal

Bench:
G Hawkins
G Matthews
F Willis
F Wynard

That roster might take some lumps early and take some time to gel (and we will anyway, regardless of who we add), but it is filled with talented, smart (which was a huge thing missing from 2013) basketball players and would be right in the thick of things come March.

We will be fine. The sky isn't falling. We don't rebuild here at UK, we reload. Bring on Big Blue Madness.

BleedBlue32, that starting lineup is garbage. It only has four McDonalds All-Americans plus the #1 projected pick for next years NBA draft
?

Cats will be loaded again in 2016.

I know Erik, it should have 2-3 All Americans at each spot and the top pick in not just next year's draft, but the 2017 one too.

With that lineup Poy and Lee would have to work hard this offseason on their offensive skills.

Consider you not only have to look at what we have but also what the competition has.

There is no Kentucky, Wisconsin, Duke or even Arizona next year. Some people are putting a 12-loss UNC team #1. Next year is wide open and UK has enough returning and coming in to contend.

I'd remind you Poythress is trying to come back from a torn ACL, no easy feat. To expect him to do so and be a starter from Day One is beyond optimistic.

That's my major concern. We're going to be athletic, we're going to play defense, we're going to rebound. But can we put the ball in the basket? We absolutely need to add a big time scorer - Newman, come on down.

I'm not being doom and gloom, but that lineup would have 8+ losses. Wynard stated he won't be here until December. The SEC will be stronger next season. That bench is really weak, sorry.

I trust Poythress at the 3. I think Ulis and Briscoe will definitely be sufficient PG's, and I think Matthews will be a stud. That said, I really, really want Newman on this team. If we can get Newman, and Diallo, I would be euphoric (You have another great shot blocker, great transition player, and tenacious, long player in the frontcourt, and an elite scorer with elite athleticism in the backcourt).

My best case scenario:

Tyler Ulis/Isaiah Briscoe
Malik Newman/Charles Matthews/Dominic Hawkins
Jaylen Brown/Alex Poythress/ Derrick Willis
Cheick Diallo/Marcus Lee
Skal Labissiere

Oh yeah, I mean I don't doubt one bit that we'll have quite a few bumps in the road and it will take some time before they reach their potential. But when they do, I think that bunch can compete with anyone in the country.

I think this is what we end up with as our rotation players.

G Ulis
G Briscoe
G Newman
F Poythress
F Labissiere

F Lee- sixth man.
G Matthews- spot minutes.

Minutes would look like this:

G Ulis(35)/Briscoe(5)
G Briscoe(30)/Newman(10)
G Newman(25)/Matthews(10)/Poythress(5)
F Poythress(25)/Lee(15)
F Labissiere(30)/Lee(10)

I hope Dominique and Derek live in the gym and the weight room the next four months, as they will have a real opportunity to earn some playing time. We will need perimeter defenders and shooters.

Any way you slice it...the roster will have a nice combo of experience, leadership, and talent...

starting line up thus far based on what we know we have for sure...

Ulis--So., final 4

Briscoe--All American

Alex Poythress--Sr, title game, final 4

Marcus Lee--Jr, title game, final 4

Skal--projected first overall pick

Matthews
Hawkins
Willis

plus a couple more elite freshmen...

I've seen worse get to the final 4 and even title game...

Poythress better not see 1 minute at SF. He's been here for 3 years already, its beyond obvious he has zero perimeter skills.
